Soulbound is a tabletop role-playing game in which players design unique and powerful weapons that grow along side their characters.
Soulbound is a real game, and we really are making it. We hoped the video would grab your attention, and if you're reading this it seems as though it worked! Now that we are past the jokes, lets talk about what Soulbound really is.
Soulbound is a rule-light, lore-heavy tabletop role-playing game in which players can create a unique Soulbound weapon for their character. This weapon, known as a "bond", remains with and grows alongside the character throughout the game. As players level up and explore the world their weapon will gain new abilities and enhancements.
Powers in Soulbound are acquired by slaying mystical creatures. Because of this players can expect to spend much of their time investigating, tracking, and hunting these beasts.
Gameplay in Soulbound works using a dice pool system, consisting of six-sided dice. Players roll an amount of dice directly based on their statistics, with all 6's counting as successes towards the task they are attempting.
Combat scenario's are represented using a hex-grid with models for characters and enemies. Attacks, abilities, and movement are all measured using this grid.
During combat each unit is given three action points (AP) to use on things such as moving, attacking, defending, using abilities, etc. Because of this, players will need to carefully manage their points or they may be caught off guard, which could have dire consequences.
One of Soulbound's key features is the ability to have a session fully prepared in minutes, without any prior preparation. This can be done either by rolling dice on tables in the book, or using the automated generation software provided with the game. By doing this players will be able to create weapons, monsters, plot hooks, and backstories in just moments.
During character creation, players will have a choice between three randomly generated soulbound weapons, also known as "bonds", one of which will carry them to greatness.
Soulbound is not only a rules system, but also a fully realized setting complete with its own mythology, culture, and lore. This setting exists to support all of the content and mechanics we have created for the game. Everything in it is designed to reflect a theme of despair and mystery within a dark fantasy environment.
The world of Solum itself is broken down into six major nations...
Primium - A temperate grasslands ruled by the all powerful Church of Des Natus. Various cults continue to rise and fall in power here, all in opposition to the Church. These rolling hills are also home to roaming harpies and demons.
Uhyre - An alpine forest that is home to a culture of gatherers with strong family bonds. Social standing in Uhyre is dictated by a rigid honor-based caste system. The woods are home to a host of fae and strange abominations.
Qray Ralim - A vast desert that conceals the ruins of a long gone race. Over the centuries, these ruins have attracted many scholars and academics who have organized themselves into what are now major cities. Arcane horrors and clockwork automatons patrol these forgotten lands.
Agrewin - A grim and shattered landscape home to fearful yet hardened people of Des Natus. This land is littered with caves and quarries holding precious minerals used for gunsmithing. However, the territory is also home to vampires, werewolves, and other terrors of the dark.
Rajan - A windswept mountain range inhabited by two eternally feuding factions. Each of these groups has built their fortress atop impenetrable mountains, almost within cannon range of each other. These peaks also serve as a breeding ground for fierce dragons and elegant tempests.
Sozo - A tropical wetland run by gangs of brutal warriors constantly vying for power. Policing here is limited to only crimes of deceit and thievery, since violence is seen as a way of life. Sozo's ecosystem is survival of the fittest; with massive beasts dominating over smaller pack animals.
The problems that plague these nations only represent a portion of the horrors that bond-users, also known as "wielders", must face every day. Cities are few and far between, with walls towering over even the tallest of buildings to protect from the dangers of the wild. Adventurers will need all the help they can get to survive in this cruel land...
Risks and challenges
We have to be entirely honest, this is our first project, and that means we're new to the industry! Additionally, some of us have a handful of other obligations outside of Soulbound such as college and work. Considering this, it won't always be possible for all of us to work together on the project at the same time. Our biggest obstacle will be refining the individual parts of the game in a cohesive playable project. Because of these circumstances we will often be working on different parts of the project at different times. Therefore, combining all of our work to make the finished project will likely our biggest hurdle, as well as a lack of industry knowledge.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
