Guernica Magazine began its life as a free online magazine 10 years ago, before it was timely to do so. Ten years later, with over a million visits to the site per year and increased recognition across the literary landscape, Guernica is still committed to the same values of journalistic and literary excellence that got us started.
With content updated on a daily basis and a new issue released every two weeks, the magazine continues to pay special attention to the underreported and underrepresented, publishing indispensable reportage, narrative, memoir, fiction and poetry from both established and emerging writers.
In 2014, to celebrate its 10th anniversary, Guernica will be going analog. This first ever print issue of the magazine will feature the best from each section of the magazine (features, interviews, fiction, poetry and Guernica Daily) published over the course of the past year (or so), for you to have and to hold.
You've already been reading us online for ten years... Won't you take us home with you? Help us make the leap into hard copy by making our print edition possible here on Kickstarter. Your pledge will help with production, writer payments, and with ushering this pretty little word baby into the world.
Featuring over 260 pages of high quality writing, a two-color interior printed on fine paper, French flaps, and a cover illustration by Nikita Kadan, the independently-published collection looks and reads smart. Available for pre-order now at Kickstarter, proceeds from the Annual will go towards expanding the range of voices featured in Guernica, compensating writers, and keeping the magazine’s decade of award-winning content available online for free.
"To my mind, Guernica is the most important online intellectual and literary journal in America today.” says Claire Messud, whose interview with Kathryn Rowland will be featured in the collection. Also included are features, interviews and poetry from Tomaž Šalamun, Kiese Laymon, Ann Neumann, Lesley Hazleton, George Packer, Cecilia Rodríguez Milanés, J. Malcolm Garcia, and many more of Guernica's esteemed contributors.
Risks and challenges
This is our first foray into print, and as such, we're learning. That said, we have a small army of volunteer staff, a wonderful book designer/project manager with boatloads of experience and feel that we'll be able to complete this project well and on time. And for 10 years, powered by love and passion alone, we've never missed an issue online -- that has to say something for our dedication.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
