Thanks to all of your awesome love and support we have reached 100% with over 48 hours until the end of our campaign! We are adding on a stretch goal! If we reach 50k before this Sunday, 11am, any backer above $10 will receive your choice of either a logo t-shirt or Eastside t-shirt for free!
Please continue to share our campaign on social media so we reach our stretch goal and can give all backers above $10 free t-shirts!
We’re Strange Matter Coffee; a multi-roaster pour-over and espresso bar in Lansing, Michigan. We originally opened as a coffee stand in the Eastside’s Allen Street Farmers Market by owner, Cara Nader.
Our small shop opened in 2014 with only four employees and twenty seats. Since then, we’ve grown to twelve employees and increased seating for up to thirty people. Everyday we reach capacity. Our tiny space simply can't keep up with our popularity in the community, and neither can our air conditioner.
Strange Matter Coffee is a team effort. Without the continued support and dedication of the awesome staff, we wouldn't be where we are today! This isn't just a job to us. Coffee is our passion and we want nothing more than to be able to share it with our customers.
In 2017, Strange Matter is moving locations, directly across the street into a brand new building. Here, we’ll have two times our current square footage, over double our current seating capacity, an efficient heating and air conditioning system, a ceiling that doesn’t leak when it rains, and a much larger tap system for more cold brew and nitro options.
The most exciting change, and the thing we need the most help with, is our bakery. Strange Matter is taking on doughnuts!
Our new space will include a scratch bakery featuring craft doughnuts and other morning pastries with vegan and gluten free options. We are going to have all sorts of exciting flavors, made only from the best ingredients. Our bakery will make doughnuts from classic vanilla bean to adventurous cereal doughnuts daily.
As exciting as this is, it costs a lot of money, more money than we have. We try to keep our end product prices low for our customers and make an effort to pay our staff a livable wage. We also have bootstrapped since the beginning. This means we haven’t taken on loans from big or small banks.
We are asking for $40k, which sounds like a lot, because it is. We need to buy all the equipment for running a bakery, like tables, proofers, ovens, dishwashers, fryers, refrigerators, and even the whole darn kitchen sink.
What about rewards?
While you will get a new, larger Strange Matter to hang out in that will make delicious doughnuts and pastries everyday, we know it's not just about the coffee and warm fuzzy feelings you'll get from helping us achieve our goal. A Kickstarter campaign wouldn't be complete without sweet rewards!
Below is a list of rewards. You only receive the rewards and we only get funded if we reach our goal, so if you can't contribute, please share our campaign on social media!
You'll receive a card valid for 1 dozen doughnuts, which can be redeemed as soon as we open the bakery. The card never expires! Mmmmm.

Risks and challenges
We have already signed the lease and finalized the layout. Time is one of our only challenges. We have no control over how quickly our building is built. There are many factors that stand in the way of our timeline being on schedule, such as, weather, permit approval, inspections and equipment installation.
All of these factors are unfortunately in the hands of building owners, construction workers, and mother nature.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
