WHAT IS THE TIP-LOC?
Flat screen TVs on their stands are not very stable. They can be tipped over fairly easily. So, if you don't mount your TV on the wall, you should at least do something to keep it upright and safe. There are many ways your TV can be tipped over...children climb on them...earthquakes shake them...you can probably imagine a number of ways your TV can be knocked over. Now, there's a fast, tool-free, effective solution to keep your TV from tipping over and getting damaged or causing injuries....TIP-LOC!
The TIP-LOC is a unique solution to a widespread problem. It has been specifically designed for one purpose...to immobilize a flat screen TV against the wall to prevent it from tipping over. Plus, it looks way cooler than a strap!
WHY IT'S GREAT
RIGID: The TIP-LOC has interlocking teeth on swiveling arms. When engaged, they lock the arms together to make the TIP-LOC a rigid brace that cannot be pushed together or pulled apart. When positioned between a TV and a wall, the TIP-LOC immobilizes the TV like a scaffold. The TV cannot be pulled forward (tipped over), OR pushed back against the wall. The teeth are molded into the shape of the arm and they lock into one of the adjustment slots when the arms are slid into alignment. The clips are then inserted to prevent the arms from sliding out of alignment and disengaging the teeth. The clips also provide an additional shear resistance to forces trying to slide the arms apart.
ADJUSTABLE: The interlocking teeth have 15 different positions at increments of approx 1/4" (6mm). *Overall length at the shortest position is approx 7-1/2" (190mm). *Overall length fully extended is approx 11-1/8" (283mm). Also, the anchors swivel, so the TIP-LOC can be installed at slight angles, if necessary, adding even more versatility. Your TV can be as close as 5 inches to the wall (the TIP-LOC installed at a 45 degree angle), or pulled out as far as 11 inches.
(*includes the anchors and thickness of adhesive tape)
EASY TO INSTALL: The TIP-LOC requires no tools to install and installation takes only a few minutes. Your TV can be sitting on the floor, on a piece of furniture, on a counter top...it doesn't matter, as long as it is next to a wall, you are ready to go. You don't even need to move the TV to install it. The TIP-LOC installs easily with your TV already in place.
EASY TO DETACH/RECONNECT: The TIP-LOC detaches and reconnects in seconds. If you need to get behind your TV, the TIP-LOC is a pleasure. And, positioning the TV back in the exact same spot is not necessary to reconnect. This adjustability gives you flexibility. Maybe you want to pull the TV out a bit, or even angle it for better viewing. With one TIP-LOC arm short and the other long, you can have your TV at an angle, yet still stabilized.
The TIP-LOC works in corners, too.
VERSATILE: The TIP-LOC anchors use the latest generation of very high bond (VHB) adhesive tapes, similar to those used in the automotive and aerospace industries. It is amazingly strong, and will bond to many types of walls/surface materials, including (but not limited to): painted drywall, painted plaster, painted brick, painted concrete block, unpainted brick/brick veneer, glass, ceramic tile, quartz, and granite. Many more options than you can screw a strap to.
This versatility allows the TIP-LOC to work almost anywhere. The plate glass window in a high-rise apartment. The painted concrete block of a college dorm. The brick face of an historic brownstone. As long as the surface is clean, the TIP-LOC will probably work.
NO WALL DAMAGE: Because the TIP-LOC doesn't use any screws or wall anchors, there is no need to drill any holes in anything. Therefore, you won't damage your walls, and the adhesive tape can rely on a mounting surface that has not been made weaker by making a hole. Removal of the adhesive only takes a couple minutes using a serrated blade to remove the rubber core of the tape. Renters can rest easy knowing that they'll probably not lose their security deposit for safely securing their TV.
EFFECTIVE: Because the TIP-LOC does not rely on the TV's mounting holes, which are typically located inward from the edges and more toward the center of the TV, the TIP-LOC can be attached toward the top of the TV and out toward the sides for maximum leverage. Also, when properly installed, the angle of incidence between the TIP-LOC and each mounting surface is very minor. These factors ensure that the TIP-LOC provides the most efficient force-to-load ratio against anything that may be attempting to cause the TV to rotate forward, without the potential problems associated with straps.
Additionally, because the arms swivel, there is less transfer of energy to the TV from the wall in an earthquake. Lateral (side to side) energy will be lost because movement of the wall in that direction will not cause movement of the TV in that direction, yet the TIP-LOC will still stabilize the TV enough to keep it from 'flopping around' in a minor quake. This is similar to how a spring-type foundation protects a skyscraper.
REWARDS FOR BACKERS
WHAT YOU'LL GET
Our goal is to get the TIP-LOC produced and in the hands of our backers ASAP. We don't want to give ourselves any more work that may interfere with that. So, we aren't offering tee-shirts or coffee mugs. We want to stay focused on the project.
Also, we know the prototype isn't the prettiest thing to look at. The plastic resin that the prototype is made of is what was used in the stereo-lithography process. That is not what the reward will look like.
Final versions of the TIP-LOC will be made from ABS plastic in your choice of white or black. In addition, the adhesive core that is visible along the edges of the anchor pieces will match the plastic. So, a white TIP-LOC will have white VHB adhesive tape and be completely white, and a black TIP-LOC will have black VHB adhesive tape and be completely black. Both will be functionally identical.
Risks and challenges
The main thing we need in order to get the TIP-LOC produced are the tools to make the parts. This amounts to the injection molds for the ABS parts and the die cutters for the adhesive tape shapes for the anchors.
Producing the molds is the bulk of the set-up cost and the main reason we are running this campaign. We have vetted 3 plastic part manufacturers for mold-making and part production, so we have multiple avenues in case the workload becomes larger than expected or the chosen manufacturer has an issue (always prepare for the possibility that a machine can break down). The plastics manufacturers also provide packaging, so they will pre-assemble and package the units for shipping.
Additionally, we have established a relationship with a 3M converter to have the die-cutter made and the adhesive shapes cut. They will use the die cutter to produce rolls of pre-cut adhesive shapes to fit the TIP-LOC anchors. Those rolls of pre-cut pieces will be given to the plastics manufacturer so they can put them on the anchors as they are packaged for shipping.
Both of these things are designed and ready to be made as soon as we have the funding. This is a fairly standard procedure.
Once the molds are completed, fulfillment essentially amounts to placing orders with the plastics manufacturer(s) who made the mold(s).
We just need names and addresses to put on those packages! (wink wink)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
