The goal has been REACHED! A little less than half came from offline contributions which Denise put through under her name, and the rest came from online donors! Perhaps we'll get a little more before the deadline and head for some stretch goals :) THANKS SO MUCH!!!
Originally from Charlotte, NC, Kryss Dula has resided in Johnson City, TN since 2004. He usually plays a couple shows per month under the name 'Kryss Dula & Friends', where his 'Friends' are a large group of outstanding musicians. The Friends change each gig, depending on who is available. They can play virtually any event, with configurations ranging from solo acoustic to a large rock band format. They always play for FREE, as Kryss is Blessed with a great job and thus can afford to see playing music as strictly an honor and privilege. He often plays for charity events to help support a variety of causes.
Kryss also provides all of his original music to anyone for FREE. And, this is where YOU come in! Playing for free requires only his time and gas money. Giving away CDs, however, requires money to make them! He recently completed recording of an album of all original music. It was entirely written, performed (except for open-source percussion tracks), recorded, and mixed by Kryss, at home in his spare time. It was played on quality instruments, with his mediocre talent and cheap software, and his almost total lack of recording experience. So, while it's not perfect by a long shot, it's a pretty accurate representation of his original music, and he likes it well enough not to cringe when he hears it, thus feeling it is of a high enough quality to share with others.
As cheaply as he could, he made 108 copies of the album without any lyrics or liner notes, and these CDs have been given away. Kryss wants to create a 'full pressing' of the album in CD-format with a traditional jewel case, adding song lyrics and liner notes. The goal is raise enough to print 1,500 copies and to give them all away for free over time. The printing estimates are roughly $2,000. There are also costs to purchase suitable envelopes and postage to mail a copy to all backers of the project at the $5 level. The extra $500 will help ensure he can cover all mailing costs. There is also the consideration that the government will consider this money as 'income' even though it will all be spent to give away a 'product', so Kryss will be taxed since he's not set up as a non-profit business and the money goes through personal accounts. Also, Kickstarter/Amazon will deduct up to 5% for service fees. If more $3,000 or more is raised, a stretch goal would be to have a limited number of "Kryss Dula & Friends" t-shirts made to be given to high level donors (perhaps also at $100 levels if enough is raised), but mostly to be given away to his 'Friends' who play for free at all his shows and to give the remaining ones to fans for free at shows.
You can listen to the entire album and download it all for FREE at www.reverbnation.com/kryssdula There are very cheap versions available at iTunes and other online venues, for anyone who wishes to 'pay' for it to help support the concept of providing original music for free, which obviously has costs. It is also on online radios such as Spotify, which provide meager 'royalties', which amount to fractions of cents, but which can add up to literally a few dollars over time.
Any additional money collected from donations or the 'sale' or 'playing' of his original material on online venues will be used to help fund Dula's use of Reverbnation and promotion of gigs, which are always FREE unless money goes to a charity. In fact, in shows Kryss organizes, he chooses an awesome local band to put in the headliner spot and then he spends his own money to promote the shows in order to help gain exposure for the headlining acts. Whether playing for 5 or 5,000, he's happy to play virtually anywhere, but the more the merrier. Kryss (i.e., me, in my third-person alter ego) hopes you enjoy his music, and thanks you for listening and supporting local and original musicians!
Risks and challenges
There are really no risks in this project. The music has already been recorded and a test run of CDs has already been produced, so it is really just a matter of getting enough funds to do the full pressing as described.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
