KALI-YUGA Volume I will be a 120 page, full color graphic novel concerning the fate of a powerful time traveling wizard named Abaraiis.

[The following images are presented in narrative sequence in order to give the reader a sense of the non-linear storytelling present in KALI-YUGA. All art below illustrated by Sarah Lopes. If you like our project please like our page on Facebook too!]

STORY

KALI-YUGA Volume I: Queen Neriti will be a 120 page full color graphic novel. It is the first volume of a dark fantasy/sci-fi trilogy concerning the fate of the heroic, time traveling wizard named Abaraiis, who is born as a 500 year old man.

Abaraiis is reluctantly involved in a war with the seven immortal Lizard Kings—a powerful alien race who utilize a form of sorcery known as Kaos magic that manipulates the fabric of space-time itself.

The first novel, will deal with the struggle of Abaraiis to defeat Queen Neriti; a sorceress hailing from the time of Atlantis but now living in the year 3030. The Queen believes that technology and a rare alien manufactured drug called DMZ will be the key to her own immortality.

In her quest for DMZ, Queen Neriti manipulates both the Lizard Kings and the invisible machine elves from the 6th dimension to conjure a unique bio-mechanical space craft, allowing her to extend both cognitive intelligence and the limits of mortality far beyond normal capacity.

KALI-YUGA will utilize the genres of cyberpunk, fantasy, space opera and steampunk to create an unforgettable action packed epic with deep metaphysical implications.

BACKGROUND

KALI-YUGA is a story that has been 3 years in the making. I submitted a treatment for the graphic novel as my bachelor's thesis in 2011 for Goddard college, which you may view here:

My scholarly book reviews for some of the publications on the Sophia Perennis website may be found here:  (the last four entries on this page).

Another example of my writing on the intersection of mythology and art may be found at mythologist John David Ebert's website Cinema Discourse here:

WHY KICKSTARTER?

Like Charles Eisenstein (who coined the term "gift economy"), we see Kickstarter and crowd funding as the economy of the future and we are using it because it is ridiculous for a creative mind not to. This is an ideal medium for an experimental and independent work such as KALI-YUGA.

When Kickstarter didn’t exist it was considerably more difficult to obtain financial support for truly independent creative projects. We know this from our previous experience in the publishing industry, as well as in TV and Film production. Kickstarter puts the creative control back in the hands of the artists and visionaries and lets the people have a say in what gets made and what THEY want to see—instead of having no direct choice or vote.

Like other successful project creators on Kickstarters we believe that full financial transparency is important information for our supporters to know. Below is an image demonstrating how the funds we receive will be distributed.

Please keep in mind that all backers who pledge $25 or more will be given a free 20 page digital .pdf preview along with the standard trade paperback of the graphic novel sometime in the very near future, allowing you to see a glimpse of the project as it is unfolding.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

With marketing support from our sponsor Sophia Perennis Press, we fortunately do not have the same risk as some others in attempting to find a publisher after the project ends, provided that this project is fully funded. However, because SPP is also an independent publishing entity, there is still a need for financial support from the Kickstarter community.

The KALI-YUGA production team promises to give our undivided attention towards this graphic novel so that we can do this as professionals as a full time job. This way, our dream of completing this series as an epic fantasy/sci-fi trilogy can finally come true.

CHALLENGES:
Because this is an ambitious 120 page project, the work involved is very tasking. The typical work day is 8-12 hours on average. In the unlikely chance of deadline delays you will be the first one to know. However, we ask that you please do not burn us at the stake if it ends up being complete a few days late. :)
