CONTINENT RACE

We’re thrilled to finally introduce Continent Race by Byron’s Games to the world. When Byron was just 6 years old, he came up with the game Continent Race during a month-long hospital stay for a ruptured appendix. It was a traumatic and scary time for Byron, and Continent Race was his way to have a little fun while also learning.

Byron and his mom, Julie, have been working on the game ever since, and they are thrilled to share it with the Kickstarter community today.

A GAME THAT GIVES BACK

When you back our Kickstarter today, you can choose to “give one” (or more) copies of Continent Race to a hospital or to “get one” and receive your own copy of Continent Race to enjoy.

Or you can choose to give one AND get one! Our goal is to help entertain, enlighten, and engage as many children as possible, and the give one, get one program is our way of doing just that.

GAME INCLUDES:

1 world map • 5 continent boards • 208 playing cards

 GAME CONTENTS

HOW TO PLAY

The object of the game is to be the player to collect the most country cards from each continent first.

Each continent is represented by a different color, so it’s easy to get the hang of the game.

-Designed for 2 or more players

-Ages 7 and up

-Each player starts the game with 7 cards

-There are two levels of gameplay: beginner and advanced.

-At the beginner level the goal is to collect country cards for 3 continents.

-At the advanced level, the goal is to collect country cards for 5 continents.

-On each turn, a player selects a new card from the draw pile and discards one of the cards in their hand. Announce the country and continent as cards are discarded so everyone is learning.

-Once a continent group is completed, the player must put that group face up on the table.

-Use the maps as references so you can see exactly what countries you still need to collect and where they are located.

-Shuffle the orange mystery cards into the deck for an even bigger challenge

ABOUT US

The 2016 Summer Olympic Games were going on when Byron was in the hospital. During his stay, his mom and one of the hospital's lead facilitators, Mrs. Ellen Donovan "Ms. Ellen," at Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, passed the time by keeping track of each country’s medals during the Games.

What started as a distraction quickly grew into a fun, hopeful activity that Byron looked forward to as he recovered.

After the games ended, Ms. Ellen challenged Byron to keep the fun going by creating a game based on all the flags he had seen during the Olympics. Byron met her challenge head on, giving himself purpose.

He was excited to create a game to help kids learn and have fun while they recovered. And thus, Continent Race was born!

This is only the first game in the Byron’s Games family. We have big plans for the future. Next up is a geography puzzle app for kids.

COMING SOON, CONTINENT RACE APP!

LEARN AND EXPLORE Video Series for Kids in Hospitals

We’re also launching an educational interview series, the Byron’s Games “Learn and Explore” show, where Byron chats with interesting kids and adults who are doing great things in the world.

We’re donating these videos to the hospital where Byron was treated and to other hospitals around the country, so kids can learn something and be entertained while they recover.

As you can see, we have big plans for Byron’s Games and can’t thank you enough for supporting us as we get started.

Risks and challenges

When selecting a supplier, we went through a very thorough vetting process to find the right one. We have been working with them for over a year and are thrilled with the prototype samples. They are exactly what we imagined, and we can’t wait to produce more.

We had numerous groups test the game--from neighbors and families to classrooms and groups of kids on their own. We were thrilled with their feedback and how much they all enjoyed playing the game. We listened closely to all comments and made improvements throughout the development of the game.
