Pizza Hunt is a photographic record of our journey to find the iconic Pizza Hut restaurants that were erected in their thousands in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. The book will feature a carefully curated selection of these original dine-in ‘huts’. Today, only a handful of these huts remain and they now have second lives as grocery stores, pawnshops, gospel churches, liquor stores and funeral homes, among other things.
Since capturing our first hut we have travelled over 14,000kms between Australia, New Zealand and the USA in pursuit of them all. To date we have captured nearly 100 huts. Although most have been repurposed, refurbished or relocated, the buildings are still readily recognisable and, for many who dined at Pizza Hut in the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s, call to mind a time of dine-in fast food and self-serve sundaes.
As kids growing up in the ‘90s, the local Pizza Hut was a place of wonder. A world of red checked tablecloths, pizza by the slice and an endless supply of soft serve. At that time, the 'Book It' program offered us a clear path to all of the pizza, garlic bread and jelly cubes our hearts desired.
About The Book
Since embarking on this project, we have always envisioned creating a beautiful publication to showcase the ‘huts’. To produce the book, we're working with the same team we worked with for our first publication, ‘On Pigeons’. We will be using everything we have learnt through our previous publishing experience to bring a selection of these huts to you.
"...a book which has, in our humble opinion, the greatest title ever: Pizza Hunt. And the special edition even comes in a pizza box. Ouch, right in the childhood." - Concrete Playground
The Pizza Hunt book will be a fine art object designed to complement the uniqueness of the 'hut' as architectural object. Each book includes a foreword by author Philip Langdon who has written for over 30 years on architecture, urban planning and design, and whose book, 'Orange Roofs and Golden Arches', was an invaluable resource for us when we were merely fledgling Pizza Hunters. The book will be a hardcover, cloth bound publication with premium quality paper, design by Sam Flaherty and illustration by Christopher DeLorenzo. And just because there's nothing like that fresh-outta-the-box feeling, the limited edition of the book comes in a custom pizza box clamshell.
"The images have been drawn together to form the superbly titled tome Pizza Hunt" - It's Nice That
Pizza Hunt is a celebration of the golden era of dine-in fast food. For anyone who’s ever made a mountain of mini marshmallows on their self-serve sundae, maxed out on free refills at the drink fountain or driven past a hut and felt its strange allure – this book’s for you.
