UPDATE 8/6/12 ---- Please don't forget to check out the updates for new and exciting bits of information.
Of note is the new interview with THE BIGHEAD's author, EDWARD LEE. He mentions our new perk of getting your name listed in his upcoming book's thanks page. How can you beat that?! For more details please take a peak at the backer reward column on the right of the page.
Who, or what, is THE BIGHEAD? A mutated psychopath? An inbred homicidal freak? A maniac sent from Hades itself? Or something far, far worse... Whatever it is, it's been cutting a swath through the backwoods of Appalachia, leaving a trail of blood and horror in its wake.
In 2003, author Edward Lee introduced readers to THE BIGHEAD and shocked the world of horror into submission. Here are but a few of the reactions:
"Edward Lee is to horror novels what Spain and S. Clay Wilson were to Underground Comics over twenty-five years ago--funny, evil, perverse as it is humanly possible to get...and gleefully outrageous about it. I'd say we got us a whole new sub-genre goin' here, boys and girls-- splatterspunk!" -- Jack Ketchum, Award-Winning author of Off Season, The Girl Next Door, and Red
"A demented Henry Miller of horror. Sexually revolting, outrageous, disgusting, THE BIGHEAD is the sickest piece of fiction I've ever read!" -- Douglas Clegg, author of Goat Dance, Children's Hour, and The Halloween Man.
"An outrageous, over-the-top gross-out! A must for any reader who thinks s/he's shockproof! Should carry a warning: do not read on a full stomach.... Far and away the grossest novel I've ever read!" -- Lucy Taylor, author of The Safety of Unknown Cities, Close to the Bone, and Spree
"Never have I been so ashamed of myself for laughing so hard at something so utterly depraved!" -- John Mason Skipp, co-author of Light at the End, The Bridge, and Animals.
"The grossest book I've ever read, an all-you-can-stomach fictive fanfare of nonstop perversity, pulp horror themes yanked inside-out with a vengeance, forabsolutely shocking entertainment. THE BIGHEAD would make the Marque de Sade wince!" --T. Winter-Damon, author of Rex Miller: The Complete Revelations, and over 250 stories
“Lee is the One Who Crosses the Line.”
THE BIGHEAD isn't just another "creature feature" - it's a no-holds-barred tour de force of horror that you'll never forget. And now with your help, and working very closely with author EDWARD LEE, we want to bring THE BIGHEAD to the BIG SCREEN, in an uncompromising film. There's no way any studio is touching this book, so in the best Kickstarter tradition, we're going to do it ourselves!
WHY WE ARE HERE
By "ourselves", we really mean the Kickstarter community. Everyone knows that movies are not cheap to make...especially ones that look and sound fantastic and have a LOT of make-up effects involved. While we have an insanely talented, veteran, Hollywood crew already on board and ready to help us for peanuts (some of them will literally be compensated with peanuts), we are still going to have to spend some money to make this short film (and make it right)! That's where you good people come in; we hope, with your generous donations, we can bridge the gap between what we have and what we need to make this short film a reality. Our goal with this Kickstarter is to raise enough money to make a complete, satisfying short film based directly on the book. We won't have enough to make the entire adaptation (yet), but it will be enough to make the year's best short horror film. Will we make a feature length movie if we're lucky enough to surpass what we're asking for? We don't want to get ahead of ourselves (but, spoiler alert: that's the plan). All of the money raised here will go directly to making this film. None of us are are getting even a dollar of your donations; we're going to put every penny on the screen. The money we are asking for will go to complete the make-up effects on The Bighead himself, rent locations (such as our dive bar), buy a few dozen gallons of fake blood, purchase wardrobe for the cast, buy some more fake blood, pay for film permits, buy even more fake blood, construct special props, and so much more.
You might say, 'Sure, this sounds like an amazing movie that I am dying to see and I cannot give enough to you good people...BUT...I wouldn't mind a little something in return'. You are well within your rights to demand something. We would. That is why we have come up with some of the better rewards around these parts. Take a look to your right and check out this list of Edward Lee coolness. From special, signed editions of the book to invites to our (what is sure to be amazing) LA premiere, to incredible, exclusive posters! Of course we have DVDs of THE BIGHEAD as well as chances to be in the movie (via your picture or even an extra role) and not just dinners with the actors in the movie but also a chance to dine with the crew AND the man himself, Edward Lee! We really and truly appreciate every last dollar you good folks are giving and we've tried to make these rewards well worth your money!
We are already well into pre-production with make up tests underway, people out scouting locations, and early casting in the works. When our Kickstarter drive ends we will be a month away from production and by that time we will be raring to roll camera. The goal is to get this done as fast as possible so we can share it with our Kickstarter friends before you know it!
Before wrapping up our plea for funding, we would like to bring you a note from the man himself:
I just wanted to chime in here with my two cents as this site goes live. I have been working with Michael for a few years now and we have made sure this script is great. I cannot be happier with what we have. I just know THE BIGHEAD will kick ass and make a terrific horror film. Thanks so much to Michael and the guys for their continued faith in THE BIGHEAD. I cannot wait to see this flick!! - Edward Lee
And this just in from the main man.......(check out update #3 for the full post from Lee's message board):
Wow, I've been so damn busy, this is the first
chance I've had to go to the link! For those of you who've donated, thanks
HUGELY. The script is very good, and they even let me tweak it! Like
the one gentleman said in the clip, horror films play it too safe these days.
Where is the home for uniquely hardcore horror these days? Well, I'm hoping that
the Bighead gets made and then promptly BUILDS that home! Hell, I'll buy the
stage blood myself! And the stage vomit, the stage hot poop, even the stage
semen! I can't imagine anything cooler nor more offensive and objectionable that
The Bighead as a movie faithful to the book. So let's all light some black
candles, draw the sign of Azazoth on the wall, and chant some intercessions to
Yog-Sothoth, and pray that this happens!

Kickstarter allows anyone to donate any amount they would like (from five dollars up to eight thousand) in order to help support the completion of a creative project. In return, Kickstarter donors receive rewards based on how much they give (see the list to your right). If you choose to donate, click the reward tier you’d like, verify the amount you’d like to donate, and at that point you’ll be taken to the Amazon.com payment processing center to make your pledge. It's that easy!
GOOD TO KNOW!!!! No money will be taken out of your account until two things have happened. 1) We have reached the end of our pledge drive on August 31, 2012 at Midnight, and 2) WE HAVE REACHED OUR GOAL OF $25,000.
This is all or nothing for us – if we don’t reach our goal, you keep your money. It’s that simple. With that in mind, please, PLEASE, tell everyone you know about this for us. Spreading the word via Facebook, Twitter and other websites would be a huge help. Even if you cannot afford to help us out financially, getting the information about us and this site out to your friends and family might just be enough. You never know that "Uncle Frank" might want to get in the film business or "Aunt Sue" has a secret stash of money set aside for something like this. Everything helps, from good people donating $10 or $20 to someone blogging about this project to their readers.
MORE EDWARD LEE?
This short is the first step in a campaign to get the entire, feature-length, script of THE BIGHEAD filmed and on the big screen. With your help and the success of this initial short, we sincerely hope to achieve that goal in the near future.
THANK YOU SO MUCH....not just for donating, not just for checking out our project, not just for spreading the word; but also for reading all this. We are so, so grateful to all of you.
Thanks to your help, we are planning on making a fantastic movie!!
Extra special thanks to Dave Hinchberger at Overlook Connection Bookstore (www.OverlookConnection.com) and also James Beach at Dark Discoveries Magazine (http://darkdiscoveries.com/) for their help getting us off and running!! You guys are awesome!!
