A Deitch Miscellany collects artwork spanning Kim Deitch's career, including everything from sketches to large-format color drawings.
Update 2/16: We're in the home stretch! And we're now at over $6000, which means that we have more to invest in materials and should even have some resources left over for future projects.
To aid in the final push, we're adding a special incentive for the backer who pledges the most money: SIGNED/SKETCHED copies of the Kim Deitch masterpieces Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Alias the Cat, and The Search for Smilin' Ed. This isn't a reward tier, since we're only giving away one set - just an extra special way to thank our most generous supporter. As of this writing, the bar is at $575, so get to work!...
And now, onto the actual project description:
Oh hi, Kickstarter denizens. Chance Press here, and boy do we have a cool book to tell you about. In September of 2014, we're hoping to publish A Deitch Miscellany, a collection of artwork spanning the career of underground comix legend Kim Deitch. On board, we have:
- "Sex, Drugs, and Sweet Music," Deitch's legendary story from Kramers Ergot 7, reproduced both in glorious color as well as brooding black and white.
- "Mine all Mine," a mind-bending image from the 1960's, published in full color for the first time.
- Sketches from Deitch's previous books, The Search for Smilin' Ed and The Amazing, Enlightening, and Absolutely True Adventures of Katharine Whaley.
- Sketches and layouts from Deitch's next book - that's right, brand new, unpublished stuff!
- Assorted other artwork, reproduced in sumptuous full color.
What about the book?
Well, that's the fun part. We don't believe that a book just needs to be a bunch of paper stuffed into some covers. We take books and book design very seriously, and we make every book from scratch by hand. We've got some pretty crazy tricks up our sleeve for this book - we fully expect it to put all of our previous books to shame (sorry everyone we've ever worked with).
Here are a few examples of some books we've produced in the past, so you know what you're in for:
We're hoping to publish A Deitch Miscellany in two editions: a "trade" edition for normal people and a "deluxe" edition for irresponsible people who aren't good with money.
Update (1/30/14): due to the overwhelming support we've received, and considering that the trade edition sold out so quickly, we've decided to publish an edition that sits in between the trade and the deluxe editions. This edition (known as the "Medium Fancy" edition) will be in the same format as the trade edition (9" x 13"), but it will be a handbound hardcover book, rather than paperback. It will also incorporate some of the fancy flourishes we will be including in the deluxe edition. It's limited to 15 copies, so don't wait around too long!
The Trade Edition:
The trade edition will be a limited, handmade book in a traditional album-sized format (9" x 13"). We'll wrangle all of the various materials, print them either on our HP LaserJet commercial printer or our Epson fine art printer, and sew them into stiff cardstock covers. (We'll pick something nice, trust us - right now we're leaning toward Fabriano Murillo mould-made paper.)
The Deluxe Edition:
This is where we get a little crazy. We love big books - Kramers Ergot 7, Sunday Press, IDW artist editions, whatever. There's something about giant books that messes with the reader's expectation of what a book is supposed to do... plus, they just look so damn impressive!
To that end, we've already invested in a brand new Epson archival inkjet printer that will print the main images at a whopping 17" x 22" size, which means that the actual book will be a gigantic 18" x 24" hardcover. For reference, that's 3" taller than Kramers Ergot 7 and Sunday Press books, and 2" taller than those giant IDW Artist Editions. Since we need to buy materials in bulk, we can't make an example to show you until this project gets funded, but rest assured that this book will be like nothing you have ever seen, guaranteed.
Where you come in:
We recently made the decision to focus our publishing efforts on large-format art books like this one. These books take tons of time to make (meaning we can only manage one release per year), and they don't sell very fast, due to the price. We rely on the proceeds of each project to fund the next project, but our new publishing model has left us with a cash flow shortfall. Unfortunately, for the first time in our press's run, we don't have the resources to invest in the materials we need to make our Kim Deitch project a reality. We have the scans from Kim, we've done the design, and we're around halfway through the prepress process. The $2000 (well, $1200 after artist comissions, Kickstarter/Amazon fees, shipping, and production of the non-book rewards) will give us the funds we need to buy:
- Paper (SO MUCH PAPER - used for printing, binding, and everything in between)
- Acid-free bookboard
- Archival adhesive
- Ink and toner
- Consumable supplies (thread, beeswax, x-acto blades, etc)
We're offering a lot of great rewards in addition to the book itself, including signed, limited edition prints of artwork from the book. These prints will be signed by Kim Deitch and will only be available through Kickstarter. That means we'll only print as many as you pledge for, and once this ends, that's it! Cool, right?
- Sketch print: 7" x 10" pigment ink print of a sketch from Katharine Whaley on fine art paper. (See the video for an example.)
- Color print: 11" x 11" pigment ink of 'A Shroud for Waldo' on fine art paper.
- Letterpress print: 8.5" x 11" print of the bottlecaps from 'Sex, Drugs and Sweet Music,' printed with help from our friend Bill Robers of Bottle of Smoke Press.
- Museum-quality print: 14" x 20" print of 'Down at the Bottom,' a large-format color drawing. This will be printed on 350gsm Hahnemuhle Museum Etching Rag paper, which (in our opinion) is the highest-quality paper available.
What if we go over the goal?
Well, we limited almost all of the rewards, since we don't want to get overfunded to the point that we can't deliver. That also means there are no stretch goals - we know the book we want to make, and we know what we need to make it happen. If we get extra money, it will go toward the following:
- Choosing even more deluxe materials, since it will allow us to accept a higher per-book cost
- Paying Mr. Deitch more money for his wonderful art
- Covering the inevitable cost overruns
- Covering the cost of shipping deluxe editions (~$50 each)
- Future Chance Press projects (so we don't have to come to you hat-in-hand every time we want to publish a book!)
Thanks for your support!
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Okay, here's the lowdown about the risks. There is a risk you won't get your reward by the estimated date. Remember that you're supporting two people (who both work full-time) to work on a project in their free time. We've been making books for over five years and have a good sense how long this stuff will take, but life sometimes gets in the way and we miss deadlines.
The good news is that we're hoping to debut this project at SPX in September, which gives us a pretty firm deadline. No promises, though. If you need a reward by a certain date (for example, if you're buying it for a birthday present or an early Christmas present), just know that you may not get it in time.
That's not to say that the project may not happen at all - it will. You'll notice that almost all of the rewards are limited - that's because we don't want this project to get all crazy overfunded. If we had to make 50 deluxe books, we'd never finish them. We know from experience how much it costs to make a book like this, and that's what we're trying to raise money for. If we get funded, the only way this book doesn't get made is if we lose our hands in a wheat thresher.
First, that's not a question. Second, you're probably right.
Here's the deal (as simply as I can manage): The whole point of this project is to create a book. If you want that book, you have two choices: the "TRADE EDITION" ($60 tier) and the "DELUXE EDITION" ($500 tier). If you want to know which rewards we want you to pick, those are they.
Since not everyone has $60 (or $500!) to pledge, we have some lower-priced rewards. Specifically, we're offering prints of select artwork that will be going into the book. These are priced from $15 up to $200, and there is a short description of each option. Hopefully that makes sense.
Then, for people that want prints AND books, we have a bunch of combo rewards. If you want a combo that isn't listed, just email us and we'll figure it out.
Finally, for people that want to support us but don't necessarily want a big, bulky book or a print they'll never get around to framing, there are non-tangible rewards, like getting access to our backers-only updates or getting your name in the book.
Also not a question, but you read this far, so we'll humor you.
The $5 reward tier is a mini book (8-12 pages) that is merely a little taste of what the glorious final project will offer. Think of it as a printed, bound equivalent of a movie trailer. Plus, Since most of our books are so damn fancy (and pricey), we wanted to create a reward that would feature some of the same artwork, but in a cheaper, less elaborate format.
