The Savannah Dance Festival, a 501(c) 3 non profit organization was established about a year ago to address the conspicuous omission of concert, contemporary and modern dance in in a city otherwise noted for outstanding visual and performing art. Music, film and visual art have thrived in Savannah while dance has languished. This project is based on the original premise of the founders of the SDF commission--Bring great contemporary dance to Savannah and the city will get hooked. With that in mind, we set a goal to bring Sean Curran Company, the best we could imagine.

Sean Curran's approach to dance combines intelligence and raw physicality with impish humor and irresistible rhythms and patterns. His work has consistently received rave reviews from such publications as The Boston Globe, The Village Voice, The New York Times and The Daily News. Curran seemed the perfect choice to energize the existing community of dance enthusiasts in Savannah as well as to reach those who simply do not yet know that they are crazy about dance. This project is designed to raise funds to pay for Sean Curran Company performance fee, hotel accommodations, master workshop fee, meals, venue and technical costs.

In addition to offering a world class head-liner company to launch a dance festival in Savannah, SDF is working hard to spread the gospel of dance through outreach and master classes, scholarship and performance. As a result, a cohort of local teachers, dance enthusiasts choreographers and educational institutions are currently working with Savannah Dance Festival to  bring outstanding dance performances to Savannah as well as to expand dance education opportunities and professional development for everyone from adult beginners and youth to pre-professionals, teachers, choreographers and industry related professionals.

Every person who volunteers their time does so without pay and often without recognition and I am forever grateful for their amazing commitment to this most dynamic, immediate and demanding of art forms. Through fundraisers, concerts, flash mobs and even this kick starter video, dance students and friends from all over Savannah have offered their time and talent to help bring the art they love to the city they love. It's been a joy to witness.

Pat Alley, president Savannah Dance Festival Commission, Inc.

Rare CD (not sold in stores) of the music of the late Emma Kelly. Emma was the mother of Pat Alley (current director of Savannah Dance Festival). Savannah Songwriter Johnny Mercer (Moon River) named Emma Kelly The Lady of 6,000 Songs after he cataloged the songs she could sing and play on piano from memory. Mercer stopped counting at 6,000. Musician and mother of ten, Emma was the subject of a chapter in John Berendt's "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Ms Kelly toured with John Pizzerelli and Gerry Mulligan and is honored as an inductee in The Georgia Music Hall of Fame. Most dancers in south Ga knew Emma because she played piano for their dance recitals. We'll throw in a post card of Johnny Mercer and Emma Kelly together.
