About

Disclaimer, The headline photo was actually taken in Assisi, but it's the one that made me fall in love with photography.
The final cover will be hosting a photo from Rome :)

This is a book about Rome, the culmination of history, culture, people past and present.
This book is an adventure, a learning experience, a mission to capture my most beautiful photos ever, a quest to capture the ineffable spirit of the city.

I will be paying special attention to the city at night, drawing on the city's own energy, and the nebulous nature of light in dark places.

Since peeling open my first National Geographic, photography has had a special place in my heart and mind. I remember sitting on the floor between towers of those yellow tomes, peering into worlds beyond my imagination.

It was not until 2007 on a church pilgrimage to Italy that I realized I could learn to  wield a camera just like those mythical explorers from National Geographic.
On the hilltop town of Assisi, I took the first photograph that made me stop and say "whoa." I've been chasing those kinds of photos, and the feeling that comes with them ever since.

My first Woah moment
My first Woah moment

Maybe it was the light, or maybe it was all the gelato I had eaten, but something clicked.

Since that day I have worked tirelessly to learn everything I can about techniques, styles, and the history of photography.

A story of Progress

I have learned to capture not only what I see, but what I want to show.
Every photograph I take builds upon the previous photos, and is better because of them, and I want to keep moving forward.

I have not gotten this far alone, and I can't continue without help.
That's why I want you to have pieces of the journey. Beautiful photos and reminders of the world we live in.

The Abridged Plan

This will be a hard back book, with a minimum of 50 pages. (Probably More)
Gorgeous photos, personal essays on the history of Rome, the culture, and my own growth as a person and as a photographer.

I'm ordering the photobooks through Mixbook, they have great reviews, and when I spoke to a representative, they offered me a 50% discount on 50 books or more. So I need to order at least  that many.

I will be spending 5 weeks in Rome from May 10th to June 13.

I will explore as much as I can, in all weather, times of day, and night.

I will then weave together my experiences through a combination of brute force, less than subtle wit, and an goodly helping of coffee, into a book that encapsulates the experience of Rome.

Disclaimer: Kickstarter does not allow the raising of funds for tuition, and I will be taking 2 classes in Rome:
1. A history course on the city of Rome through the study of the element of water. Aqueducts as life veins of the city.
2. An independent study of photography.

The money raised here is not going towards tuition. Instead, it is going towards living expenses, airfare, photo equipment, and most importantly, the printing of the book itself.
I mention this because I believe the classes will add value and depth to my time in Rome, and they guarantee that I will not be scrambling next October to find facts about Rome on Wikipedia.

Risks and challenges

There are certain challenges one expects when traveling in a foreign country. The most obvious challenges being: not speaking the language fluently, and learning ones way around a without getting lost.

There is an inherent danger in photographing in any large city, especially at night. I will practice safety while balancing exploration and creative risks.
I will be insuring my equipment, and downloading my memory cards on a daily basis, to prevent the loss of my work.

Given the complexity of photographing, and writing a book, I will be creating a support team to help me. This team will consist of readers, editors, experts in art and history, as well as moral supporters. This will assure quality and accuracy in every aspect of this book.

I will keep all of my backers and supporters updated regularly through my
blog.
I intend to post and update as much as possible, but I will need to balance my time blogging with my actual experience of Rome.
During the 5 weeks I'm in Rome, I hope to post at least once a week, but if I choose blogging over actually experiencing Rome, I'll have nothing to blog about.
