About this project
Together for the first time in one book, boxing legends such as Vitali Klitschko, Jake La Motta, Carmen Basilio, Mike Tyson, George Foreman, Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Oscar de la Hoya, Marvin Hagler, Alexis Arguello, Evander Holyfield, Roy Jones Jr., Joe Calzaghe, Lennox Lewis and Julio Cesar Chavez, just to name a few… talk about the sport they love in more than 50 exclusive interviews.
For more than five years, author, ex-fighter, gym owner, and boxing promoter Alexandre Choko traveled the world, tracking down more than 50 of the most important people in boxing. Choko has been able to combine the best parts of these interviews with hundreds of amazing images of the subjects and their lives in and out of the ring, to create this unique and remarkable book.
International boxing referee Joe Cortez, “Mr. Fair but Firm”, having known Alexander Choko for a number of years, partnered with him for the THE FUTURE OF BOXING project that Choko had in mind. Cortez believes in this project and wants to participate in making it a success for the boxing world and beyond. He finds the interviews to be remarkable, and the book as a whole, a knockout! His goal is to encourage Kickstarters and boxing aficionados to pledge what they can, so this book can get printed and made available to the widest audience possible.
THE FUTURE OF BOXING – CONTENT
The heart of THE FUTURE OF BOXING is contained in the more than 50 first-person stories from the best-known personalities of boxing. Each of the interviewees will be featured on several spreads including a brief bio and a first-person article based on the interviews.
But that’s just the beginning. The book will also feature more than 400 photos of boxing greats from the tremendous collections of boxing photography held by the World Boxing Council (WBC), The Ring Magazine, the International Boxing Hall of Fame and Getty Images. Not to mention sections on the world around the sport, from celebrities and the impact of TV to famous boxing venues and the latest gear. Michael Rosenthal, editor of The Ring Magazine, wrote the first two chapters of the book: The History of Boxing and The Great Fights.
It’s an extraordinary hard cover coffee table book of 324 pages in a 12 x 12 inch format, mirroring the “squared circle” that is home to every boxing match.
THE FUTURE OF BOXING – THE DVD
Hear and see boxing’s greatest legends, up close and personal.
In addition, for the special edition and the special limited box-covered version of the book, a 90-minute DVD will be included, featuring the very best of the interviews along with Choko’s commentary on meeting these famous figures. It’s like having 50 of boxing’s greatest sitting down for a personal face-to-face.
THE AUTHOR – ALEXANDRE CHOKO
To truly get inside the head of the boxers in THE FUTURE OF BOXING, it takes a man who was in the ring himself.
Alexandre Choko brings more than two decades of experience in and out of the ring to his work on THE FUTURE OF BOXING. A former amateur fighter, Choko left the ring to become an independent promoter, while also running one of North America’s most popular fighting gyms (the renowned Tristar Gym, where he taught during 8 years). Among the more than 60 boxing or fighting events he staged were “Choko’s Boxing Fight Nights”, a very popular karaoke-style event for amateur fighters who wanted to test their skills in front of a crowd.
In 2007, Choko teamed up with the International Boxing Hall of Fame to create the series of interviews that resulted in THE FUTURE OF BOXING. He traveled around the world to track down the fighters and other important figures of the sport. It was his personal rapport with and knowledge of the fighters, along with his experience of being in the ring himself, that allowed him to get such insightful and noteworthy comments from the interview subjects as they told their very special stories.
