From the Academy to your Parlor
We at the Ravenswood Academy engage in Fencing, Music, and Archiving. We also shuffle cards like no one else (see the above video). Our passion for playing cards and our appreciation for aesthetics culminated in the desire to design our very own deck; 52 beautiful pieces of fine paper in complete harmony with our skills and visual preferences. We present: JEUX D'EAU Playing Cards.
While we enjoy bringing cards to life through the movement of our hands, it was decided from the beginning that this new design had to look stunning in stillness; Beauty at rest, even if the deck is just sitting on a coffee table. We think you will agree we achieved this result.
The subtle gradient from dark blue to light gives the cards a gentle glow.
Fanning and Spreads
As the deck is brought to life, our unique design creates a lush wave of azure filagree against a pristine white backdrop. Differing motions reveal intriguing perspectives and shapes, allowing the art to kaleidoscope and coalesce in a whirlwind of elegance.
Sophisticated Game Night
Not a Master Card Handler? Even the simple act of spreading the cards to check your poker hand will give you something beautiful to behold. So fancy you'll need a second monocle.
What's in a Name?
Jeau D'eau (literally "Water Game") references the French composer Maurice Ravel's piano piece which seeks to imitate water in all its forms - spraying, trickling, splashing, crashing. This term also alludes to the magnificent water fountains in Versailles and other parts of France where architects sought to seamlessly incorporate moving water as a motif into royal gardens. These beautiful images of Fluidity, Movement, and Creation are all central to the heart of card play, whether used for games, flourishing or magic.
We dig the past. Well, not as much as archeologists, but we really do love old books. For our joker cards we decided to lift vintage art straight off of an old card magic book in our Archive from 1902 (a great year for card books). The sleek, dark pen-and-ink drawings work perfectly with the project as a whole. Have a look for yourself.
These historic images of the Victorian magician reminded us of the vintage theatre magic posters put on display in times past. We decided to pay tribute to this lost era and create our very own intimate 11x17 version. Frame yours and hang it in any Academy or Edwardian Smoking Room.
Please note: Only thirty (30) mini posters will be available, plus an additional seven (7) set aside to be autographed by the Ravenswood team (scroll down to meet us). We want the poster in your hall or video to be a novel and rare sight for the curious onlooker, no matter how well traveled they are.
*Limited Edition* Only 900 will be printed...
A thing of beauty is a joy forever. While many deck printings run into the thousands or are even unlimited, we desired to create something a bit more rare, giving Cardists something more meaningful as thanks for their support. JEUX D'EAU playing cards will be limited to a run of 900. They won't last forever.
*Project Update: We have since secured a Top Tier Printer, thanks to the overwhelming support from our backers! Read more about our amazing supplier here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1167684454/jeux-deaux-playing-cards/posts/2373453*
"Who's going to print your cards?" That depends on how many deck orders we receive during this campaign as some suppliers will take small orders (100 decks), others require larger orders (1000).
We understand that this question comes from concern over the quality of the finished product (and rightly so); Here's what we can promise:
1. There will be Air Pockets.
Want to see what we mean? Let's zoom in on one of our card corners.
See the indentions? These are air pockets. Air pockets mean less friction as less of the card is in contact with the others. This means smooth ribbon spreads, fans, riffle shuffles and overall fine handling when the stakes are high.
We have heard horror stories of cards ordered online only to arrive virtually useless: no air pockets means a virtually un-fannable deck. Trust us: we want to play with these cards. There will be air pockets.
2. The cards you will receive will handle just as well as the ones in the above video. We ordered the same deck from different suppliers to compare handling. The one we used for filming happened to feature Casino Quality card stock (and air pockets!), sourced from France. We realize the preference in thickness and slickness of cards varies from cardist to cardist, but ultimately we will deliver a deck that will keep up with all your shuffling skills.
Packet Cuts and Displays
If you like card flourishing, the elegance of the interlocking design really highlights your expression of the art. We'll get our hands out of the way so you can appreciate the design.
Tuck Case Design
As a quiver that shields your cards from the elements, the tuck case is an essential part of both aesthetic vision and practical function. When it comes to JEUX D'EAU Playing Cards, streamlined elegance and stylish presentation ensure that you can transport your cards as safely as you do proudly. This case has ink in all the right places.
First Stretch Goal: The Grey Seal of Ravenswood at $7000
If we reach $7,000 USD by the end of this campaign, all decks will include The Grey Seal of Ravenswood Academy. A Seal of Shadow that hints at deeper things beneath the Academy's surface, this somber ash-grey stamp echoes the overcast silver accent seen in our court cards.
*Project Update* The Seal will be upgraded and re-designed to also include the individual number of your deck (#009, #157, etc).
Second Stretch Goal: Embossed Tuck Case at $10,000
Look at the Tuck Case diagram above. Imagine taking your index finger and running it down the suits: the heart, the club, the diamond, the spade. Imagine feeling them push back on your finger, each one a cool smooth bump correspondingly shaped. Imagine feeling the blue filagree and the suits rise above the white; a case that gives you tactile feedback the moment you pick it up. If our project hits $10,000, detailed embossing will be added to the outer blue of every deck you purchase. An extra process will be added to the printing in order to enable the blue ornamentation on the box to literally stand-out. Smooth undulations await your fingertips.
Third Stretch Goal: JEUX D'EAU Crimson Edition at $12,000
From JEUX D'EAU to BORDEAUX. Wine is made with the greatest care and enjoyed for its fine quality; why shouldn't the same standard be applied to playing cards? When passion ignites and the scarlet streams of wine and hot-blooded youth are launched into motion, a crimson cataract of Shakespearean proportions awaits. Let the rivers run red.
This beautiful deck will be even more rare than the first, with an extremely limited print-run. This project was never about producing in excess: rather than receive more revenue we instead choose to couple rarity with a deck that is both exquisite... and striking.
If this project reaches $12,000 USD, we're bringing the fine wine out of the cellars. Cheers.
Limited Reserve - Seven Autographed Decks from Ravenswood
A rare piece of the Academy's history. Only seven decks total will be signed by all five of the particular members of Ravenswood Academy involved in this project. Each deck will be autographed and hand-wrapped, sent to seven different supporters with the greatest of care. For the Card Collectors as well as the Generous Patrons interested in supporting our work. Who are these young artists who will be raising their glass to you? Meet our party: some of the students and teachers of Ravenswood Academy.

Matt It would be quicker to list what Matt hasn't done... Among other things he is currently a ballroom dance teacher over his own studio and knowledgable in dozens of dance styles. You will have to ask him about the bunny. Sing and Dance. Until death, it is all life.
Jenny Our local artist. Last seen at the Arts Goggle offering the public a glimpse into the variety of mediums and materials she explores (from clay to canvas). While perfectly agreeable, you may encounter her in Saber class at the Academy for a more spirited exchange. Create and Live.
Alexander The First Student of Ravenswood. Master of Arts in History. Bachelor of Arts in Music Composition. Card Flourisher. Martial Artist. All that time studying came at a cost. You will never be perfect, so go now and do great things.
With your support, we hope to print an entire batch of these decks not only to use ourselves but to share with you. Consider purchasing a few decks to support the Academy. Thank you.
Risks and challenges
Playing Card projects have been successfully fulfilled many times on Kickstarter, so no inherent problems exist within the basic template for success. We are confident we can address any logistical problems that arise from the printing process all the way to when the deck finally arrives in your hands. We promise to consistently update and communicate with our backers in order to keep them informed on our progress. Much Thanks!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
