STOP THE INSANITY!

Companies on KickStarter that make 3D printers are competing solely on price. A new 3D printer shows up almost on a daily basis.  They are making them smaller and cheaper.  Many have fallen by the wayside because they just couldn't make them for the price offered, or are just too small.   How many useful things can you print if it fits in the palm of your hand?

Have you been putting off purchasing a Rapid Prototype Machine because you didn't know what technology you wanted?  We at OmniMaker finally have solved your dilemma. We have figured out a way to make one machine quickly and easily accept plug-and-play modules that can totally change the nature and the capability of the machine.  Here's how it works:

There is the base machine.  Think of it as an intelligent docking station.  It has the brains and part of the brawn.  As with almost all Rapid Prototype Machines, the base has a platform that raises and lowers the object to be made (referred to as the 'Z' axis).  This platform can be heated, chilled, or left at room temperature.  It could be enclosed or left open.  The base has a sturdy frame, a color touch screen display, an SD card slot, a USB socket, and a power supply capable enough to handle the base and the connected module.  Now let's say you originally purchased a Filament Extrusion Module for your OmniMaker base.  It's been working fine, but your clients are demanding a higher quality print.  All you need to do is purchase one of the UV resin printer modules currently available and plug it into the base and you have upgraded for about half the cost or less of getting an entire new printer.  Plus you can still use the filament extrusion module when you want.

These are high quality professional machines designed to meet or beat the competition in terms of accuracy and ease of use.  To help reach the hobbyist market, we offer kit versions that are identical to our assembled products. Unlike our competitors we will not be selling toys.  To give an example of the quality and robustness of our products, most competitors use one "Z" axis stepper motor.  We use 4 high torque motors placed at each of the corners of the platform.  This helps in several ways: increases stability, can carry a heavier load, and allows for accurate automatic leveling of the platform.  Also, the machines are self-contained, no need to tie up a computer to produce your part.

 Future Modules:

We know there will be more modules; some made by us and some made by the community.  All the software and hardware will be open source, so we'll make it easy as possible for community involvement.

This is not just a 3D printer.

OmniMaker takes its capabilities from the type of module that is placed on it.  Currently we have a filament extrusion 3D printer module, a CNC router module used for routing wood, plastic, etc., a UV Resin printer, a laser scanner digitizer, and an experimenters XY module.  We also have in the works a DLP resin printer module.  When you pledge, make sure you select a Base and at least one module, so you can get started right away.

This patent pending concept will allow new capabilities as new technologies become available supplanting existing 3D prototyping technologies.  However, new technologies are not the only upgrades available.  If someone in the community finds a software or hardware improvement for an existing module or the base, we will test it and make sure it doesn't have any negative side effects.  If it works, we will distribute the software upgrade free of charge and the hardware upgrade at cost.

Our Goal

We need your support to help us to transition from prototype to production.  You will help us to launch the ultimate Rapid 3D Prototype machine, the OmniMaker.

With the support of the community the open source hardware and software will allow new modules to be created some of which we can not imagine today.

Here are some we can imagine:

Carbon-fiber printer

Frosting printer

Candy or chocolate maker

Laser sintering printer

Vinyl sign maker

PCBoard maker with pick-and-place and reflow

4 axis robotic spray painter

As a member of the OmniMaker community, you have the opportunity to make money by creating a new module and selling it on the OmniMaker web site.  We will not allow direct commercial sale of your module on your own, but we can present many lucrative options for you.  Inventors needed!  We will try to make it as easy as possible for you, and if your new module requires 2 or 3 axis motion, you might want to pledge for the Experimenters XY Kit.  See the Rewards section.

We wish to thank the many Boulderites and Colorado University students who's selfless efforts helped create the prototypes we have today.  And a thanks and shout-out to you the KickStarters who's pledges will get the revolution moving forward.

Risks and challenges

Several custom electronic boards need to be ordered. Suppliers and vendors have a nasty habit of fulfilling orders later rather than the promised dates. We have tried to account for this but you never know. We plan on doing as much development here in Colorado as possible (even if it is more expensive) so we have tighter control over suppliers.

Shipping also is an unknown. Especially for assembled larger units, specially designed packaging needs to be created. Shipping globally may require tariffs etc. For all these reasons, we did not include shipping in the cost of the pledges.
