Design & Play is a book about design and the importance of outdoor play. It features 40 case studies of extraordinary playscapes from around the world with full-color photos, images of the design process, and stories behind these incredible play environments. It also contains a 200-year timeline of playscape history, summary research on the science of play, and articles from play experts on their work in the field.

Design Museum Foundation is a nonprofit museum of design with branches in Boston, MA; Portland, OR; and San Francisco, CA; and the vision to pop-up great design thinking and dialogue everywhere.

We believe design can change the world. Done well, it can elevate our quality of life, make businesses more competitive, and protect our environment. Design awareness, education, and expertise are more important now than ever before as design continues to impact communities, organizations, and markets around the world.

Our Mission: Bring the transformative power of design everywhere, to inspire a world full of creative problem solvers by producing inspiring exhibitions & events, educating everyone from kids to CEOs in design thinking, and transforming cities and communities through innovative public demonstration projects.

After three years of planning, partnership-building, curation, and design, we launched the Extraordinary Playscapes exhibition in May 2016 in Boston, then brought it to Portland, OR in Fall 2016 — it’s currently on-view at the San Francisco Public Library. We’re working with partners to bring it to Seattle, Chicago, and Dallas. The exhibition features playscapes from around the world with images, video, artifacts, and more. You can even play right in the exhibition and build your own playscape. Thousands of people have experience the exhibition so far, and hundreds of thousands have interacted with our outdoor play installations connected to the exhibit.

We assembled an amazing team of experts to help us curate Extraordinary Playscapes and Design & Play — we’re so grateful to our Content Advisory Committee:

  • Missy Benson, Play Advocate, Playworld
  • Sandra Burtzos, Capital Project Manager, Portland Parks & Recreation
  • Sarah Carrier, Playground Consultant, Goric Playgrounds
  • Christopher Cook, Commissioner, Boston Parks and Recreation

We’re producing Design & Play because it’s time for a revolution in outdoor playscape design. Kids need access to well designed places for their imagination to thrive. We’re always looking for ways design can solve problems and make people’s lives better. When we started this project four years ago, we looked across the landscape of American playgrounds and we were less than inspired. Too often kids don’t have access to play spaces and when they do they don’t promote free or challenging play. We knew there must be examples in the world of extraordinary playscapes that could help inspire the next generation of playgrounds. We also simply want to promote play — it’s vitally important to all our lives. When you look at the last 20 years, kids are playing outside about half as much as they used to. Only one in four kids get the recommended 60 minutes per day of active outdoor playtime. When we looked back at our childhood, 60 minutes doesn’t feel adequate at all. And now one in three American children are overweight or obese. Play nurtures our physical, mental, social, and creative health and teaches kids to take risks, be creative, and practice collaboration — all things we believe in!

We aim to raise $30,000 via this Kickstarter project to help fund the final phase of Design & Play’s development. We’re fortunate to have received funds from amazing organizations like the BSA Foundation, Playworld, Sappi Ideas that Matter, Pincus Family Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and more to support the curation and content development of the exhibition and book. The content is complete — we’ll use your support to finish the design, do the final copyediting, and print the first run of 1,000 books.

We anticipate finishing the book design and sending to the printer in late-July 2017 and shipping the first run of books in September 2017.

From all of us at Design Museum Foundation, thank you for your consideration and support of Design & Play!

Risks and challenges

The risks of this project are very low. We have the content, we’ve almost completed the design, and we have experience with editors, printers, publishing, and distribution.
