WHO I AM
My name is Robert Karpay. I'm a composer living in Brooklyn, NY, originally from Baltimore, MD. Three years ago, cellist Ben Capps premiered my Cello Concerto, a piece for solo cello and small orchestra. Now, Ben has asked me to write him a solo piece to be recorded on his upcoming album, "Cello Horizons". The piece is in 4 movements and is a musical depiction of memories I have from growing up in Baltimore, MD. Ben and I have decided to premiere the piece in Baltimore. I intend on using a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for the official commissioning* of the piece as well as the documentation and release of my piece, Charm City Cello Sonata on the album, "Cello Horizons".
*The solo piece I'm writing for Ben hasn't been finished yet, but I have a sample for you to check out below. "Official commissioning" is what happens when performers or organizations give money to composers like me to write them pieces of music. In this case, the commissioner for the piece is Ben Capps.
Here is a sample of my Cello Concerto, with Ben Capps playing Cello.

ABOUT THE PIECE
My piece Charm City Cello Sonata is about different memories and emotions I have about growing up in Baltimore in the 90's and early 2000's. The piece is in four movements. Each movement combines elements of rock music, classical music and undulates between different emotional worlds. To me, Charm City Cello Sonata creates a thoughtful but exciting nostalgic environment of memories that pop in and out of my mind every once in a while but were never as strong as they were when I was getting ideas for this piece.
I've always had ideas for a piece about growing up, not necessarily in Baltimore. Over the past several years, I've been living in New York. Every now and then, I go home to visit and I feel like I get even more attached to Baltimore each time. I tell people that I am a New York-based composer, but I owe who I am to my experiences growing up in Baltimore. I didn't choose for this piece to be about that. It just happened like that. Like when you're reading some post modernist book that starts out being about one thing, but by the middle of it, it turns about to be about something else all together.
