My name is Mark Mills and I have been making and restoring automata for over 20 years. Just over a year ago I made a collaboration piece with a taxidermy artist named Amanda Sutton of Amanda's Autopsies. The first automata we made together was the white rabbit magician, which was a great success and it was brought by a famous magician as soon as it was finished. I instantly fell in love with the media and find it a constant source of inspiration. So much so that I want to take it a stage further and create large automata sculptures for an exhibition, they will not only incorporate taxidermy but also a rich variety of natural history elements, such as skeletons, insects and even living plants. The automata sculptures will be operated by the viewers themselves through a vast system of cranks and levers, making them part of the sculptures, bringing them too life. I want to make automata's that will amaze, I want to make machines that make people laugh out loud one minute and jump in fright the next. I have so many idea's that some days I fear my head will explode. The money from Kickstarter will enable me to concentrate on the bigger more complex piece's for the exhibition.
Another thing that the money from Kickstarter would allow me to do is purchase a 3D printer. A 3D printer would be the ultimate creation tool for me, to produce hollow body shells for the taxidermy, but also I can design and print unique parts for use in the mechanisms. Whatever I image in my head I can print out and use in my sculptures. how wonderful!
Amanda doesn’t use animals that were killed for taxidermy, she uses reptile feed, road kill and animals that died naturally. She creates taxidermy to preserve the beauty of the animal. Check out her site http://www.amandasautopsies.com
All the music in the video was created in one take on a hand cranked synthesizer automata I have also designed. But that's another story........
Take a look at some of my work, to see the quality and detail of what I do. Thank you
The Rat Fortune teller
This piece was made as a one off for a nationwide automata building competition organised by the moving parts Newcastle puppetry festival back in May this year, and I'm pleased to say it won first prize. With comments such as "we particularly liked the professionalism of the craft" and " loved the performative elements" from the judges.

Risks and challenges
All my pieces are completely handmade from scratch and involve many hours of work. Times stated for delivery are estimated and in many cases they will not take as long to deliver, but I think it is best to over estimate delivery times rather than to under estimate them. Taxidermy items will vary from the pictures shown on the page as every animal is different and each one will be unique. Thank youLearn about accountability on Kickstarter
