A brief history of Mighty Maps:
The Mighty Maps concept originated from our retail arrangement with MiniatureMarket.Com. For several years they had carried our 3rd party Star Wars Miniatures maps, and after WOTC ended the licensing contract, and that game was discontinued, Adventurers Atlas had to find a way to move forward. Steve Lucinski, owner of Miniature Market, suggested we do a series of maps for Heroclix. He actually came up with the name, and Josh Derksen, my partner with Adventurers Atlas, came up with the logo.
Although the maps all sold, Mighty Maps was riddled with challenges from the beginning, mostly the demand for Heroclix Maps was much less than it was for Star Wars. There were also other 3rd party Heroclix maps out there, who had several advantages over us (mostly typical nerdy internet forum politics)
Our advantage: We felt that Heroclix Maps had some obvious artistic challenges. The images were low resolution, murky, and messy. But artwork aside, the most infuriating thing about Heroclix maps was the hideous black grid and thick terrain marking that would be slapped opaquely over the image. We knew we could make a better map. We knew that the grid and terrain markings could be discernable without overpowering the image itself.
One of our specialties was the "village" maps these were 3 sets of double maps that connected to each other for big play.
We ended up releasing about 12 of these maps. They sold well, but we never really found prominence in the Heroclix Community. I continued to make maps for Mighty Maps, but never released them to the public or had them printed. The series ended, and for the time being Josh and I went about our lives. But we always end up getting the band back together to put out new stuff.
Reviewing the maps, Mighty Maps was an amazing little collection. I nice mix of genres, and really cool artwork. Although they are primarily for Heroclix, they really can be used for any RPGs, especially superhero or modern games.
My goal is to re-release the maps in a digital collection, along with a handful of previously unreleased maps. I would like to upgrade the art on a few of them, as well as release some of the terrain, textures, and objects we used for the maps.
The basic pledge is 25 Dollars. 25 Dollars will get you the collection and all the stretch goals.
The money you pledge will essentially go towards the time I need to put into the collection to get the files ready and tweak the art. 500 dollars equals about 20 hours of work. Work that needs be accomplished:
- Formatting for virtual table tops
- Removal of terrain markings for those who request it
- Tweaking some of the artwork (2 maps should REALLY be completely revamped)
- Organizing the files, curating the collection
UPDATE: I'VE UNLOCKED ALL THE STRETCH GOALS AS OF RIGHT NOW. It is day 3 of the campaign, and I don't want to be stingy. Every thing you see below is now part of the set.
500 dollars will unlock the original released mighty maps. Every 100 dollars after will unlock previously unreleased maps
600 Star Cells-a galactic prison run by an intergalactic police force that wear green and use special rings. Please NOTE: this map is currently available in my Ultimate Digital Compendium.
700 Apocalypse Town- A section of a city that’s been torn up by some sort of event. City Hall has been turned into a base of operations
800 Noir Incorporated- a dimly lit office building that evokes a sense of film noir. Could be a mobster’s hide out, or a police station. Just a cool retro office building.
900- UFO in Central Park- Self explanatory
1000- The Catacombs- and underground tomb with old coffins and bloodstained floors.
1100- Agency Headquarters- A high tech facility for a high tech agency
1200-Old Port- a small port with some warehouses along the docks
1300- Freight Yard (Connects to Waterfront Warehouses)
1400- Mean Streets Corner Bar
1500 Mean Streets Seedy Hotel
At 2000 we will actually make new maps, and backers will help decide what’s next!
2000- NEW MIGHTY MAP
2500- NEW MIGHTY MAP
If for some reason the kickstarter is the one that makes me a ridiculous amount of money, I would love to get these printed up.
At 6500 Mighty Maps 1 will get reprinted and shipped out to anyone who would like a copy.
Every 1500 dollars from there will result in the reprinting of one more map.
once my 500 dollar goal is achieved, I will spend a week in June completing this project.
