The illuskate table: The freshest furniture on the farm!
The illuskate table is a global collaboration between designer Stuart Melrose and some of the world’s hottest new artists.
Thank you for taking the time to check out our project! We love you already xx
Illustration and Skateboarding are the key ingredients for the super fresh illuskate table. Designed by Stuart Melrose and made in a similar way to skateboards today, the tables are all collaborations with his favourite artists and illustrators from around the world!
Made from layers of birch ply then topped with a piece of limited edition artwork protected by a high grade melamine laminate. The wood is waxed for protection with Stuart Melrose’s logo die-cut from grip-tape and placed on the underneath. The tables are all limited editions of 300 and are numbered. They are inherently light but strong and can even be used as mini benches as well if you got some extra buddies round and need a bit more seating.
We have a whole bunch of rewards to choose from. As well as a number of different artworks on the tables we have customised tables, t-shirts, paper toys and a limited print only available through Kickstarter..(All your design choices and t-shirt sizes will be collected via email if the project is successful, you just need to select the correct size of table if you are backing a reward that contains an illuskate table).
The layered veneers give that beautiful striped edge like you would find on a skateboard.
To keep with the whole skateboard vibe of the table they are finished with Stuart Melrose’s logo die cut from griptape. It is fixed with industrial strength adhesive and isn’t going anywhere in a hurry!
We have done a lot of the hard work already including the experimentation and testing of the materials, moulds and prototypes. We have finalised the colours and quality on the printed laminates. Sourced and checked all the premium components for the tables from the wood finish to the die cut grip tape logos and had to overcome a few unforeseen issues along the way. So why Kickstarter? By backing the project, you are essentially pre-ordering from our first collection of tables, and enabling us to raise the capital needed to meet the minimum production requirements, not only for the furniture itself but also the bespoke packaging. You will also be helping us get together some stock to create a retail presence and get our designs out there. If successful and we do go over our target you will be helping out with an even better storage and distribution setup and helping us get new designs realised even quicker.
We can’t wait to get things going and get our tables into the hands of people that like them around the world and also into some of the hippest shops on the planet. We would also like to share the story with you as it unfolds and hopefully if you like what we are doing you can help out by sharing it with your friends, family, blog subscribers, work colleagues.. Facebook buddies, pizza delivery guy, chess club??? Whoever you like it is all much appreciated!
THE ILLUSKATE TABLES
Please pick the right size option when you select your reward. We have two sizes to choose from detailed above. The images are just to give a quick size reference!(and look cute) Your design choices and t shirt sizes if relevant will be collected from you if/when the project is successful.
From an early age the kaleidoscopic lungs of Kev Munday have been breathing colour onto any surface within reach. He’s exhibited in gallery shows from Tokyo to Barcelona. He’s designed work for clients including Walt Disney, Fracture Skateboards and Graham & Brown Wallpaper. Still a young buck Kev is regularly exhibiting and live painting at events around the world. He’s looking forward to many more years of watching paint dry.
Droog79 is the alter-ego of a salty-faced, suburbia-fleeing, inky-fingered, board-propelled artist, illustrator, designer and lawn bowls aficionado. Droogs weird and wandering work via ink, paint, pixels, words or just a line in the sand has festooned walls, bodies, beaches, posters, windows, shopfronts, skate and surfboards, phones, laptops, canvas, clothing and publications from Milton Keynes to Mexico.
Growing up around the graffiti scene throughout his school years and into
University, Bill (Dirty30) started off by performing in live art battles called
Secret wars. After completing his studies he worked in graphic design, but soon
realized he did not want to not lose heart and decided to pursue a career in a
fine art. His work is character based, with heavy weighted lines against
thinner ones with spray paint, paint pens and oil as a medium.
In the early days Bill worked for cleaning firms scrubbing floors for hours on end during that time he took the composition of the dirty floors with the scuff marks etc., and obtained a whole new loose movement. From this he began to show work in exhibitions around the country, in galleries such as Weapon of Choice and along with big names such as Banksy, D-face and many more.
Burn353, an artist from Central Illinois, has a combined style of graffiti and stencil art, with the details of various mixed media. He utilizes his skills as a painter, graphic designer, graffiti artist, jewellery maker, and pen-striper to generate modern design with an old school spin. This multi-talented originator has been showing his creative artistry for the past 12 years in gallery shows in LA, NY, St Louis, Chicago, Nashville, Miami, and everywhere in between. Not only has his works been shown in galleries, he has designed company logos, album covers, skateboard graphics, jewellery and clothing. He has also worked and designed for celebrity clients, professional athletes and various companies.
Stuart is the designer of the illuskate table. Part sea lion and able to sneeze fire Stuart is still probably better known for his farm fresh furniture. Setting up Stuart Melrose™ in 2008 Stuart has been delighting his customers (including some of the world’s largest brands), as well as the world's design media and has featured in some of the most prestigious design shows along with his own solo events.
Creating new pieces all the time you are going to be seeing a lot more of his creative and colourful furniture/sculpture and hopefully a lot more collaboration projects too...
(if you want to read a bit more about Stuart then please click on his Kickstarter Profile)
Below is a list of some of the places Stuart has featured so far:
As well as our tables we have a whole host of other rewards put together for our Kickstarter project. Please check them out below as well as a breakdown of each reward level. We will be sending out emails when the project goes live to collect all your details such as design choices and clothing sizes, but if you are having one of our designer tables please select the correct table size with your reward!
Instead of just giving you our love for your help for our first reward Stuart has designed something especially for the smaller reward backer in mind. Obviously you still get all our love and thanks but we thought if you are doing that he should design you something in return.
If you are unfamiliar with the paper toy scene paper toys are (as the name gives away) toys made from paper! Ha ha… its complex….. If you back a toy reward or have one included in a larger reward if/when the Kickstarter is successful we will email you out a link to download a pdf file to print out. This will contain all the components and instructions you need to cut out and make one of the little beauties. Stuart has designed a paper toy portrait of each artist involved in this project. The associated artist did the graphics and ‘colouring in’ of their toy....
(All your design choices and t-shirt sizes will be collected via email if the project is successful, you just need to select the correct size of table if you are backing a reward that contains an illuskate table).
Fancy some superfresh threads?
Designed specially for the project we have a couple of premium t-shirts from all the collaborating artists. They are made from top quality ring spun cotton in men’s and women’s sizes. The t-shirts will be printed with the best quality DTG printing unless we get more than 25 backers for a design then it will go into full screen printing. The t-shirts have been specially designed for our Kickstarter backers and are unavailable anywhere else.
We have an exclusive to Kickstater collaboration print which if the project goes live is unavailable and will be unavailable anywhere else ever. Especially for this project Kev Munday, Droog 79 and Bill Thorpe have come together to produce the artwork for the limited print. If the project goes live then the print will be strictly limited to the Kickstarter backers who have selected a relevant reward. This is the first time all the artists have come together to produce this unique limited beauty.. hand signed by all the artists and you’re unlikely to see a collaboration like this again.. The art work will be an A3 Giclée print on matt white 300gsm stock. Dimensions: 297 x 420 mm and carefully shipped in a postal tube.
CUSTOM KEV TABLE
Just when you though it couldn’t get any fresher… how about a personalised table by the legend Kev Munday??
Kev Munday will work his magic and turn your image into a piece of his artwork before adding you to the ‘cool crowd’ in one of his crowd scenes. You can pick from a full colour or a black and white design when we email you for your options but please select the correct reward to suit the size of table you would like.
The photo can be of you, your mum, your kid, your guru, your postman, in fact anyone you like as long as you have permission and own the image. Please also feel free to let us know any other details you would like included when we collect your information before going into production. These can be things like you want to be in tennis gear with a racquet, smoking a pipe, holding your favourite spoon? ….
How about having both Stuart Melrose and Kev Munday for the day? I know??? Really?? You lucky lucky person…
There are 3 options here you can choose from if you select this reward.
1.Stuart and Kev can come to your home or workplace. The guys will talk you through the story of the project and Kev can paint you a mural or a bespoke piece of art while Stuart designs you a bespoke piece of furniture ( this can be any piece of furniture you chose from table to side board to boardroom table). (materials and production costs are not included for any bespoke furniture designed) You will also get an illuskate table of your choice, a print, a t-shirt, and all the toys.
2.Stuart and Kev can come to your workplace, college, uni, home, wherever you like (within reason) and give you a talk about the project and the design and art that we love. We can give a group talk, do a workshop or talk one to one. We can talk with you beforehand to see what exactly you would like us to cover and having lectured and run workshops before we are quite flexible in creating something around your input. You will also get an illuskate table of your choice, a print, a t-shirt, and all the toys.
3.Stuart and Kev can help you out with your design/art project. They can meet you and discuss their Kickstarter project with you then help you out with your own project or design idea. That’s right both Stuart and Kev for the day to help you fire up your project. You will also get an illuskate table of your choice, a print, a t-shirt, and all the toys.
With any option you will get 8 hours of their time with a couple of breaks and a stop for lunch. We are quite flexible with how you want to run the day. For instance if you want to go to the pub all day and discuss the project while drinking beer…..this is fine by us!! Due to travel and accommodation costs this reward is only available to mainland uk backers.
We have tried to make our whole package as attractive to as many people across the world as we can (we love you all). The downloads do not obviously have any shipping but with all the other packages we have tried to keep the cost down as much as possible. We are offering free domestic delivery and super discounted prices on international. Our £2 and £5 toy rewards are downloads. Our £25 and £29 t-shirt and print rewards are free to domestic backers and ship anywhere else internationally for £5. All of our table packages have free domestic delivery and the international delivery price to mainland Europe, USA and Canada is listed on each reward as well as below on our chart. For other countries please see the chart below for the amount you need to add for your shipping. If your country is not listed please feel free to message us for a price. If we get a couple of backers from a non listed country then we will add it to the chart also.
I want multiple rewards!!
If you are an international backer that wants multiple prints you only need to pay 1 lot of shipping. If you want multiple t-shirt rewards you only need to add £2 per additional item unless you have a table package. If you have a reward that includes a table and want to add additional t-shirts or prints to your order then you do not need to add shipping to these additional items as we will put them in the box with your table! If you want multiple table rewards and you are in mainland Europe, USA or Canada then please add £10 for each additional table package for either size!
I want to give my reward to someone as a gift!
If you are a generous person and are backing a reward as a gift to someone else then please feel free to print any of our product images relevant to your reward to help indicate what you have backed. (if you want to put them in a card for instance).
International backers are responsible for any customs/import duties.
Please note if you live in a place regarded as 'remote' by the major shipping companies you may also be charged a surcharge.(If you send us a photo of where in the world you are together with your items, our most remote backer will have their surcharge refunded)(please, please be a penguin)

Risks and challenges
We have a lot of experience in the production of quality furniture and sculpture and Stuart has worked on projects for such clients as Zaha Hadid, Microsoft, BAA, Xbox, as well as bespoke and limited edition pieces for the consumer market. Things can go wrong though from time to time and there are still obviously risks involved even for the most experienced designers. Even with this project so far we have had our issues. We were nearly ready to go with the first manufacturer we had agreed to work with who were one of the longest standing and most experienced manufactures in the UK. Testing had been done and we had got all the way to the stage of producing our first prototypes of the smaller sized table. We had even been invited to showcase our prototypes at the Birmingham Interiors Show, Pitfields, and London’s Royal Festival hall during Design week with Designers Block. We have also been showcased in many design magazines and blogs across the world.
Unfortunately the global recession hit the manufacturing company hard and before we had the chance to get into production the company went into liquidation. This in turn hit us as we had invested a lot in design for their machines, the production of moulds, materials and testing. After a good bit of searching and meetings we have found a new manufacturer. We did manage to get our original moulds back but unfortunately our new manufacturer could not use them as they had different machinery and heating techniques. We were back to square one!
As we said earlier though we are at the stage now with the new manufacturer where we have tested the new moulds for both sizes, made a test batch of both tables and are ready to start rolling. We had to play around with different ways to retain the tables from warping as they dried but have also resolved these issues. Due to the manufacture of the tables and that the art is printed before being pressed into the table, the placement of the print may differ very slightly from one table to the next.
So what else could go wrong?? Hopefully nothing! With our experience in furniture manufacturing we are certain we will be able to climb over any hurdles even if they did pop up at this stage. Even if the worst thing happened and our new manufacturer went into liquidation, or burned down (neither of which we can see happening) then we would just have to go with another manufacturer. This would only affect our production schedule though pushing delivery dates back and not affect your investment in us! This is a worst case scenario though and could apply to just about anyone manufacturing anything.
We obviously hope our project is successful but don’t anticipate completely selling out of any specific tables limited run. If this does happen then the artist will create a new colour way of that design and all backers of that design will be notified of the additional option. The design will then be dispatched on a ‘first come first served’ basis in order of who backed the project first.
We are as ready as you can be and ready to start getting our fresh tables out to our generous Kickstarter backers! Thanks again and there is a lot of our love floating around the world to you for your help..xxLearn about accountability on Kickstarter
