About

I have been working as a teacher in Baltimore City Schools for the past 15 years. At the same time, I have been an artist exploring spaces, objects and  collections through my photography. Starting in January of 2015, I was able to bring together my two worlds (urban education and fine art photography) through an iPhone photo project I originally shot and shared with friends via Facebook on a day-to-day basis. I began working on the Stairwell Project when I was assigned to spend one period of each school day patrolling one of my school's stairwells to ensure students were going to classes.  This allocation of my work, as the Instructional Support Teacher leading my school's English department, led me to reflect on the idea of "work," how spaces are used and time is parceled out within the context of the school building in a school system that, both physically and metaphorically, is crumbling around us.

I began to collect images of the interesting and meaningful objects and spaces I encountered during each class period I spent on stairwell duty, and then extended that idea to also collect images on days when I was not stationed on the stairwell because I was stuck covering classes for teachers who were absent when we could not secure a substitute or proctoring required state testing for hours at a time. While these images speak to the specific activities that fill my work day (and that occupy much of teachers' work time in general) during the work or school day, they also point clearly to the work that remains for all of us who are invested in our public education system.  They are beautiful in composition and color but often disheartening in content: leaky windows, cracked concrete, litter, multiple layers of cracking paint, etc. These images point out the beauty in our crumbling system as well as the work that lies ahead.

I am posting this project in hopes of raising enough money to print a limited edition of 40 selected images from the Stairwell Project series. I want to host an exhibition (exhibition space is as yet unsecured) that showcases these images in hopes of sharing my experiences in Baltimore City Schools and helping our community better understand some of the challenges that our schools (and by extension our students and teachers) face. As a teacher and artist with a home, family and hefty student loan payment, I simply cannot afford to print these images without support from you: my friends, family and larger community.  For those who don't already know how Kickstarter works, I have to raise the FULL amount requested within the 30 day fund raising period in order to receive the funds raised. If I don't raise the full amount, you will get your money back, but you won't get your rewards and I won't be able to complete the project. If you'd like to see this project completed, please share far and wide! Here is a detailed budget breakdown so you can see where the money will be going:

  • Printing costs for a limited edition of 10 prints each for 40 images (as quoted for archival quality printing on smooth fine art paper from local printer Alpha Graphics): $2880
  • Printing and postage costs for thank-you postcards given as rewards (based on cost of $.50 per postcard, offering unlimited number but figuring based on 100 backers at this level): $50
  • Printing costs for unframed square prints given as rewards (based on cost of $1 per 4"x4" print, offering 680 square prints as rewards): $680
  • Printing costs for framed square prints given as rewards (based on cost of $35 per framed 4"x4" print, with finished size of 8"x8", offering 55 framed prints as rewards): $1925
  • Estimated shipping costs and shipping materials: $800
  • Estimated 10% Kickstarter fee: $630
  • Estimated total project cost: $6965

Please help me share these images and make them available to you and others.  Please share this project with your friends! Thank you so much for your support.

Risks and challenges

While I don't anticipate any major challenges in completing my project (as the funding for the project IS the major challenge I've faced), I know I will come upon small obstacles along the way to project fulfillment. I will need to secure a space for my exhibition, ensure the images I am working with are printed correctly and in a timely manner, and work with a variety of businesses to finalize the items I am offering for rewards as well as the space for the exhibition itself. Anyone who knows me knows that I am not a quitter, and I have a vast network of contacts to help me in making this project a success. If 15 years of ongoing work in Baltimore City Schools doesn't point to my ability to persevere in the face of challenges, I don't know what does. I have no doubts regarding my ability to make this project a reality and a success.
