Happy Dude (formerly known as Black-White) is a color-changing puzzle platformer. You play as a little box-shaped character named Happy Dude and your color determines how you interact with your environment.
When white, Happy Dude will collide with another white object, but he will pass in front of a black one. In a similar way, when black, Happy Dude will pass in front of a white object, but will be obstructed by a black one. Using this logic, the player must strategically invert Happy Dude's color from black to white (and vice versa) to solve challenging puzzles.
Happy Dude is guaranteed to launch on PC, Mac, and Linux platforms, and it may also be available on gaming consoles if there is enough interest.
The full game will feature at least 12 nonlinear levels. Each level adds a twist to the unique color-changing mechanic to keep the gameplay fresh. The final game will feature professional voice acting and music composed by game music legend, Grant Kirkhope.
In Happy Dude, the color of an object will determine how it collides with its environment. As mentioned above, white objects will obstruct each other but pass in front of black objects. Likewise, black objects will collide with each other but pass through white objects. Grey objects will always obstruct both white and black objects. For an illustration of these rules, see the images below.
Happy Dude will invert his color whenever he touches a magic blue orb. The player cannot move the orbs. Instead, they must strategically choose which orb to use to invert Happy Dude's color.
The blue orbs never disappear, so the player may invert their color any number of times without penalty.
Although the color-changing mechanic is simple to grasp, it has a hidden layer of complexity.
For example, Happy Dude can only open a black chest when he is white. He cannot open it when he is black because he can't pass in front of black objects. However, when he is black, he can stand on top of the chest.
To use another example, Happy Dude must open a white door when he is black. Happy Dude cannot pass in front of the door when he is white because he cannot pass in front of white things.
Each level in Happy Dude adds a unique twist to the basic mechanic, keeping the gameplay fresh. For example, the outer space level combines the color-changing mechanic with space gravity physics in the style of Super Mario Galaxy. When white, Happy Dude is pulled by the gravity of white planets, but black planets have no effect on him. When black, Happy Dude is pulled by the gravity of black planets. (Grey planets always exert a gravitational pull.) See the animated GIF below:
Although Happy Dude has a broad appeal and family-friendly aesthetic, the puzzles are not meant to be easy. Players will not be required to solve every puzzle to reach the first ending of the game. However, players who solve every puzzle will be rewarded with a secret ending and one extra level.
Once upon a time, the world was a colorful place. Unfortunately, the evil Red Wizard believed that the color red was superior to all other colors of the rainbow. He cursed the land and stole the other colors! Happy Dude must undo the curse of the Red Wizard by restoring the missing colors of every level.
You must solve puzzles to collect 6 different color gems in each level. When you collect a color gem, the corresponding color is restored. (See the pictures below.)
You complete a level by restoring all of the colors.
Happy Dude is nonlinear. Each level can be accessed through the castle hub world.
The player is not required to find every color gem before moving on to the next level. If the player gets stuck on a particular puzzle in one level, they are able to leave and try a different puzzle somewhere else.
Game music legend, Grant Kirkhope will be writing music for Happy Dude! Grant has scored the soundtracks for some of the greatest video games of all time including GoldenEye 007, Banjo-Kazooie, Viva Piñata, and Donkey Kong 64. Mr. Kirkhope's memorable melodies will provide a whole new layer of richness to the world of Happy Dude.
The music in Happy Dude's Kickstarter trailer was composed by James Covenant with the exception of 12 seconds (from 0:43 to 0:55) which were composed by Kevin MacLeod. Credit is attributed below:

Hello, my name is James Covenant. You may have seen one of my viral YouTube mashup videos such as the Star Wars Call Me Maybe, the Avengers Sing Christmas Carols, and Captain Picard Sings "Let it Snow!" For the past two years I have spent thousands of hours designing, programming, and drawing artwork for Happy Dude. Without any funding, I have only been able to develop the game on a part-time basis.
Once the project has been successfully funded, I will have the resources to work full-time on Happy Dude until it is completely finished. I will also use some of the allocated budget to hire additional help to accelerate development.
This budget will fund an official soundtrack featuring game music legend Grant Kirkhope! Grant is a BAFTA nominated composer who has created the soundtrack for numerous best-selling video games including GoldenEye 007, Banjo-Kazooie, Viva Piñata, Donkey Kong 64, and Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.
The funds raised will also provide for the vocal talents of several professional voice actors. If you wish to play the game without any voice acting, you will have the option to disable all of the voice-overs from the game's audio menu. All important dialogue will be displayed as text onscreen in the dialogue box.
Our vision of Happy Dude is only limited by our budget. If we can exceed the initial funding goal, we can develop additional features that will make the final game even better.
Our dream features for Happy Dude are locked away in the chests below. Once we've surpassed the initial funding goal, our stretch goals will be revealed. A chest will open every time a dream feature is successfully funded.
In addition to pledging in this campaign, there are many other ways you can help. Show your support for Happy Dude on Twitter and Facebook. Spread the word!

Risks and challenges
Most people underestimate the amount of time it takes to develop a video game. One of the biggest challenges to completing a project of this scale is meeting the release date deadline. Many of the video games funded through Kickstarter have been delayed for at least a few months.
In order to overcome this difficulty, I have invested thousands of hours developing Happy Dude and the Black-White Game before coming to Kickstarter for funding. I have developed 5 early access levels that are fully playable and indicative of the intended quality of the final product. I believe that all of my work on Happy Dude for the past two years has given me a realistic perspective on how much time and money will be required to complete the game in a timely manner.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
