The Heart of Africa

In Solomon Kane’s time, Africa was a deeply mysterious and dangerous land. Little explored by Europeans, it was a place of near-legend. Kane is one of the few who dares to brave the trek to its shores, and fewer still who venture into its interior. For this reason, he is a stranger in this endless land of magic and cannibals, and has to rely more than ever on his inner strength and the blessings of his immortal companions. Unsurprisingly, it is not long before Solomon Kane is in the middle of a deadly situation once more.

There are two new Adventures in this box, both based on stories by Robert E. Howard. These are the Wings in the Night and The Footfalls Within. Between them, these Adventures have a total of 5 Acts (50 chapters).

5 acts, 50 chapters, 30 hours to play everything once (but lots of replayability)

Box Contents

The box contains everything you need to join Solomon Kane on these African Adventures. This comprises hundreds of cards, a story book, new tiles, tokens, and loads of gorgeous new miniatures, including the enormous Red Horror.

Wings in the Night

The broad outline of the story as it occurred in Howard’s novel is as follows. Remember though, that this is what happened there. You and your friends make the decisions in your games, and perhaps your skill or your luck outstrips his previous efforts!

Solomon Kane escapes from the cannibals
Solomon Kane escapes from the cannibals

An encounter with cannibals starts this Adventure, though Kane does his best not to spend too much time in their dangerous company. Even so, as soon as he escapes he falls straight into the fire from the frying pan, walking into a ruined village that has been terrorised by the inhuman akaana. These strange flying creatures seem to be a horrible amalgam of bat or bird and human, and they strain Kane’s definition of “God’s creatures” to breaking point. Are they part of the strange natural world in this alien land, the work of the devil, or some dark summoning from the mind of a sick wizard? Any of these seem possible. And any of them are, depending on the path you take and decisions you make.

The wings! The wings! They come again!
The wings! The wings! They come again!

“The wings! The wings! They come again!”

Akaanas
Akaanas

Solomon undertakes to protect the innocent villagers, and when this plan goes tragically wrong he swears vengeance as atonement for his error.

“And now he wondered if it were not all a nightmare.”

Fighting a numerous foe, who can fly as well as fight, makes this a unique challenge for the Puritan hero.

Footfalls Within

Solomon Kane does not approve of slavery. In fact, it utterly disgusts him, and his first thought, on finding a train of Arab slavery is:

“Wo unto ye, sons of iniquity, for the wrath of God is upon ye.”

When I said he did not approve, Howard says:

“The fury Solomon Kane felt would have been enough at any time and in any place to shake a man to his foundation; now it assumed monstrous proportions, so that Kane shivered as if with a chill, iron claws scratched at his brain and he saw the slaves and the slavers through a crimson mist.”

Kane saw Hassim swayed like a reed in the wind, lapped about by a gigantic pulsing red Thing that had neither shape nor earthly substance.

So, despite the fact that he is alone, he cannot help himself. He must confront the slavers…

Hassim
Hassim

In the original tale, Solomon is captured and dragged along with the slave train, through the jungles. Eventually they happen across an ancient mausoleum, hidden in the green shade. It is an ancient structure, around which nothing grows. The atmosphere is one of dread, yet it is so curious that they approach. On its iron door are unintelligible writings that make those trying to read them even more uneasy. Even the dank air seems to pulse with the evil breath of some demonic monster.

The Red Horror
The Red Horror

Of course, the Solomon Kane game doesn’t force you to relive the same experience as the novels. There are several threads for the story to evolve into, and though you may retrace the written steps from the original stories, you may equally forge your own path, and do better, or worse, than Howard’s Solomon Kane did.

If you are interested in any of these add-ons, simply click on the blue “manage your pledge” button near the top of the page. Then increase your total by the amount of any add-ons you wish to include in your pledge. So, if you have a Puritan pledge ($110) and want to add the Heart of Africa ($55), you would increase your total to $165. If you decide to add Right Hand of Doom later ($10), simply click on the blue “manage your pledge” button again, and add that amount to your total. You can change your pledge as many times as you want while the campaign is running.

During the campaign, Kickstarter doesn’t let you tell us what the money you pledge is actually for, so don’t worry about that now. Instead, after the Kickstarter is over we will send you a “pledge manager”. This allows you to tell us exactly how you want to allocate your pledge, which add-ons you would like, how many core boxes, and (most importantly) where we need to send it all!

Leo will be Live in about one hour to talk to you about this first expansion! Don't miss him, it's at least as exciting as the World Cup starting today. :)

      @Kimmo
They mentioned the All-In Pledge during a live stream, saying that it would cost about $320. It has been mentioned by them a few times, actually, but they have not revealed the date that will go live or the exact price because "things can change." For example their Big Announcement (Update 13) now includes the Black Riders Expansion, which was going to be a $20 add-on.

re. All-in: I’m confused as I don’t see such a pledge level having been added. Has it been removed, set visible only in some countries, or is it a hypothetical upcoming level that has not been added yet?

Yea... I think the All-In having the Right Hand of Doom invited for free was a bad move on your part. The whole point of Early Bird pledges is to get people into the campaign early to boost the final funding potential as well as keep those backers for the whole (or at least the majority of the) campaign due to fear of losing that EB bonus and having to pay for it later. Having the All-In now include that bonus is a slap to the face to the early backers. I would HIGHLY recommend not putting in the All-In pledge. Look at campaigns like Nemesis where they base it on backer number, and they take care of the credit in the pledge manager. Their All-In pledges do not include the EB bonus, but you can still add it to your pledge for extra money.

@Chad Same here. I only went for pledge cause if I wanted to get it later I old missed out. Knowing there is no reason to keep that pledge I'm now tempted to lower to £1 and see how it all plays out.

    6. Chad Pearson on

Yeah, the first add-on being this expensive hits a little hard. I'll either get everything or nothing, so I'll wait and see what all comes our way. I also agree with people that are saying "what's the point of the EB backing if All-In pledges later on get the same stuff?"

cost ~50% of the base game itself :/

Super extension, dommage qu'il n'y est pas une figurine pour représenter le pauvre bougre attaché au poteau sacrificiel en guise d'intro pour "des ailes dans la nuit" :). J'ai eu énormément d'empathie pour ce personnage.

Same goes for no themed Event cards in this as well, which seems odd.

Nice expansion - minis are great as in the core. Also have to say I think this one is better value than the core box as well - which to my mind seems odd, though I guess it kind of works as I now feel like I need to buy the add-on in order to make the core seem like value for money. Still not sure that is going to pull in many new punters to drive the core forward though.
No promised N'longa and no apes, so assume we will be getting another similar African expansion to cover the other stories.
Also surprised his does not have its own themed Darkness deck, or at least some themed cards to add to that.

    11. Matthew on

@Ben: But if everyone can go to the same All-In then there really was no benefit for the EB to begin with since everyone that does All-In now gets the same item that the EB’s did for free...

    12. Ben Clapperton Collaborator on

      @ Jun

You’ll still get the EB for free when you go all in as it’ll be free there too

The all-in here is much less than JoA :)

So...how does this work with the early bird? I plan to go all-in, so would I have to change my pledge or just add $ to buy all the addons seperately? I don't get it - please advise.

    15. Adrian Lovelace on

i really hope this doesn't spiral into another $700+ endeavor. after all we don't have Joan yet and some of us just cant afford to do that over and over so close to each other. and being a completest its all or nothing

It does look really, really cool, but is there an option of picking this one up in retail? I can't remember if the entire Solomon Kane game is KS exclusive or if there's a possibility of buying add-ons like these later on after receiving the game (like on Mythic Games' website...)

Love it! What a suprise! And it seems I may be right about a second Africa expansion dealing with 'Red Shadows' and 'The Hills of the Dead'.

    19. Jack on

What's with all the people who act like they haven't ever done a Kickstarter before and are aghast at the practices they know nothing about? There's always new people, but I haven't ever seen them talk this way in the nearly ten campaigns I've closely followed. It's getting... odd.

    20. Missing avatar

      Mark on

Asking people to pay for expansion content a year before the base game is even released? This is a worrying trend, similar to "Early Access" games on Steam that are littered with content locked behind paid DLC. Perhaps you should focus on building up content for the main game - you'll lose a lot of backers otherwise.

    21. Jack on

Since the All-In includes the Right Hand of Doom for free just like the EB does, it won't hurt you to change pledges!
