Everyone has the ability to change the life of a child. With “The Spotlight Initiative” ACT is trying to do just that … improve the lives of our local youth by offering programs that will build confidence and forge friendships. It’s a sad reality that in today’s world, the light we most often see illuminating our children’s faces is that of a computer, tablet, phone, or TV screen. ACT Theater Company wants to change this reality. We want to make our young people’s faces shine from a different light: the spotlight. To make this dream into a reality, we need your help. We need to raise $80,000, but need at least $22,000 to get us started. The funds will be used to install two ADA compliant bathrooms, so we can officially get our doors open to the public without the use of special permits. After 33 shows in just six short years, if we cannot proceed to the next level, we may be forced to close our doors.
ACT Theater Company’s mission is to entertain, educate, and enrich the lives of our members, our audiences, and the community. We strive to perform professional-quality live theater that embraces diversity, fosters a passion for the performing arts, and touches the lives of the entire community.
When children are engaged in the arts, it’s proven that they do better academically. But we don’t just want them to do better in school - ACT wants them to flourish in life and be the best they can be. The skills that are taught in workshops, classes and educational programs at ACT can be used in classroom presentations, college interviews, and in conversations with teachers and other adults. These are skills and lessons that students will carry with them for their entire lives … and it all begins by putting them in the spotlight.
You might wonder if participating in theater can really do all this. It can- It’s about being part of a team and making a commitment. It’s about taking part in something that is bigger than just one person and expecting excellence from all those involved. It’s about learning to work with different personalities and embracing differences. In a world where our youth are often forced to grow up before their time, ACT seeks to surround them with a nurturing and fun environment that embraces their differences and helps them love themselves for who they are.
By having our own performance space, ACT will be able to expand our educational programs and offer more to the community. Your pledge will touch every person that walks through the doors of The ACT Theater - not just the countless kids and teens, but the adults who mentor them, and the audiences that come to see their faces in the SPOTLIGHT. No gift is too small and every single dollar counts.
Risks and challenges
When people think non-profit theater, they think of only a few shows per year. This is not the case for the ACT Theater Company. As of this year, including our summer education programs, in the six short years since ACT began, we have performed 33 shows featuring kids, teens and adults. And this is WITHOUT a theater to call home. Our own theater will allow us to expand our education programs for kids and teens, and produce more shows, classes and programs for the local youth.
The funds raised from Kickstarter are just that … a start to realizing our dream. The monies raised will be used to start renovating our current space, while we begin our season and begin performing. Then, as resources allow, we can add little by little. An increased production schedule will allow us to bring in more revenue, which will help fund this project further. Ultimately, we estimate that we need $80,000 to build and outfit the performing arts space of our dreams. Ticket sales alone do not cover the cost of productions, which is why we host multiple fundraisers each year to supplement our income and grow our scholarship fund, along with reaching out to the community for corporate sponsorships and support. ACT gives out as many scholarships as we can and provides financial aid for invested students whenever possible. We are taking a risk, putting the time and investment into this building; but to get our kids away from the screens and into the spotlight, it’s a risk we believe is worth taking. If we want to grow, our only option is to have our own performance space. To keep our mission alive, we must have a home.
We have a solid business plan for supporting the future of ACT Theater Company, and the push we will get from a successful Kickstarter campaign will allow us to put this plan into action. It is always a challenge to grow your followers and donor base, especially without being able to perform consistently in the same location. This has always been our biggest obstacle, but we are confident that by performing predominantly in one location, we will overcome this. This will not only have a positive impact on the ACT community, but it will also affect our entire local community. Having a performance space creates consistency for our loyal patrons and allows us to do so much more - educational classes and youth workshops all year, season tickets, community partnerships with local restaurants and business ... the possibilities are endless.
