OUR OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS:
‘Get Amongst It: The Story of The First Check Yo Ponytail Tour' documents the trials and successes of the first national CYP tour which brought Spank Rock, Big Freedia, Pictureplane, and The Death Set to audiences across the country. The film serves as a case study of what it takes to launch a DIY tour and build a brand in the current music industry landscape. This feature length doc shows you the 'How To' of building a tour yourself while also talking to a wide range of today's current names to share in their experiences both with touring and with Check Yo Ponytail itself. Thus far the film also features Grimes, Wavves, 12th Planet and the entire CYP crew, but will feature many more.
HERE'S A SPECIAL VIDEO BIG FREEDIA MADE FOR US:
SAY WHAT? A CHECK YO PONYTAIL MOVIE??
It's true. We decided a couple years ago to start documenting everything and make a movie, but now WE NEED YOUR HELP to finish it!
We've put together some super solid rewards including donations from top tier artists like A-Trak, Boys Noize, Switch, Spank Rock, The Death Set, Classixx, 12th Planet, Pictureplane and more to come. Also, we have a ton of CYP2 memorabilia like Original Flyer Art, Photo Prints, Silk Screen Posters, Shirts, etc. We are even selling the Original Art from when The Rolling Stones played Check Yo. Plus, tons more!
MORE THAN A SHOW: THE FIRST TWO YEARS OF CHECK YO PONYTAIL - 7 MIN MINI-DOCUMENTARY:
SO WHATS THE MOVIE ABOUT?
In 2011, Check Yo Ponytail embarked on our first ever National Tour. The tour was 10 dates long and featured Spank Rock, Big Freedia, Pictureplane, The Death Set and myself, Franki Chan.
The tour was a hugely ambitious undertaking for my partner, Danny Johnson, and I. Not only was Check Yo Ponytail 2 under one year old at the time, with little national awareness of what it is, but financially we were unable to fully back the tour. In order to pull it off, we literally put everything we had on the line because this tour was an essential next step in what we saw as our vision for Check Yo Ponytail.
It was a huge risk and often times very close to disaster. Everything that could have gone wrong, did. Yet 19 people came together over 10 shows to create an experience that left a lasting mark on us and everyone we came into contact with.
Luckily, we filmed the whole thing... then kept filming!
The tour is only the beginning of the movie as we follow up with all of the artists on the tour and what's been happening in their lives. We follow the history of Check Yo Ponytail and the impact it's had while also talking to all sorts of artists that have graced the CYP stage to share their experiences with Check Yo and touring.
OK, SO WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?
To me, this tour represents and is a shining example of the struggle of the modern artist. We live in a world of too many artists, too many tours, not enough backing in the form of labels or money, too level of a playing field and not enough of an audience to fill those needs. This is the story of what it means to be a independent artist operating in the music world today, often faced with the challenges of taking ideas and risks in their own hands with nothing more than the belief it will work out in the end.
This is also the story of living in the modern wild west. We live in a time where truly anything is possible and new rules are meant to be written. These 5 artists, and several of the artists that have graced the stage of Check Yo Ponytail over the years, are all prime examples of people pushing the boundaries and redefining what concepts like 'genre', 'independent' and 'artist' can be.
And finally, this is OUR story. As the guy that not only created Check Yo Ponytail and has created a business as a promoter, I also co-organized the tour, designed all the artwork, managed all the financials, performed as a DJ AND performed as the Drummer for The Death Set on the tour. So many of us involved in the modern music scene a forced to wear a ton of hats. Many of us bridge what it means to be an artist, label head, promoter, etc. How is this being addressed and defined?
It's the struggle of our journey, what it represents to the current independent music scene and what it attempts to answer that warrants this documentary be completed. We'll be talking to everyone involved with the tour as well as a whole variety of artists big & small to get their takes on the same subject and their experiences with Check Yo Ponytail. Additionally, hopefully, you'll get the basics on how to put one of these together along the way.
This is the amount of money we need to finish making the film. Specifically, the money will cover these things:
Travel, Crew & Gear to finish filming, Survival money for our Director so he can make finishing this movie his full time job, Post Production (Editing, Animation, Color Correction & Effects), Original Music Production and Song Licensing.
If we are lucky enough to go over our goal, those extra funds will go into the post production of the film. The more funds we raise, the better the movie!
WE CAN DO THIS!!
We are a bunch of guys that have little experience in making a movie, so once it gets made, you're probably wondering what we plan on doing with it, right? Well, there are a few options...
-Entering the film into Festivals
-Selected Theatre Runs
-Touring the movie ourselves

ABOUT CHECK YO PONYTAIL:
Check Yo Ponytail 2 is an open-genre, open-format event series held monthly at the Echoplex in Los Angeles. The event has become known for highlighting some of today's top performers, with a few tried and true legacy acts in between. There's no doubt that Check Yo Ponytail 2 has played an integral part in the evolution of the modern music scene, supporting music that challenges the way we think about and enjoy culture.
In the past, many of today's progressive artists including Justice, Matt & Kim, Boys Noize, and countless others made their Los Angeles debuts at a Check Yo Ponytail 2 event. CYP2 has since expanded beyond its home at the Echoplex through a series of specially branded events that include parties at SXSW, stage takeovers at Electric Forest, and the CYP Tour, a mobile version of the show that takes the full Check Yo production on the road.
While the lineups remain an integral part of the show going experience, it's the extended Check Yo Ponytail universe that make the parties "MORE THAN A SHOW" complete with live visuals, original flyer artwork, collaborative mixtapes, professional photo and video coverage, and online social media interactions that create an experience like no other.
A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM CYP2 CO-CREATOR DANNY JOHNSON:
I've dedicated the last 10 years of my life to providing a solid, stable foundation for artists to grow and develop at their own pace. I've always drawn my inspiration from the DIY spirit, and have tried to build businesses off of the core idea to maintain independence and never compromise the integrity of our vision. I found that Franki exemplifies that as well.
Together, we have produced amazing things with Check Yo Ponytail 2. Because of our strong will and "don't take no for an answer" attitude, we have been able to create a platform that truly reflects what is happening at the core of emerging music scenes. We carefully curate and build shows that combine genres tastefully with the hopes of inspiring new creative directions with no limitations.
The Check Yo Ponytail Movie represents everyone that grew up doing their own thing, creating their own identity, and building their dreams on their own terms. 19 people all from very different places coming together to show people how to enjoy themselves. The experience of being on the road for 3 weeks with all of these people is very personal to me. The is a story everyone can relate to and it's a movie needs to be made.
A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM DIRECTOR WILLIAM BADGELY:
I've known Franki for nearly 15 years now and I've always believed in what he was doing. Franki has found an excellent partner in Danny Johnson and to no great surprise Check Yo Ponytail represents all that I've found to be important in my 20 plus years of involvement in underground art and music. When I look at Check Yo Ponytail I see an incredibly personal and love filled commitment to excellence, diversity, and community... because of this I think the story of their struggle is something we can all learn from and enjoy.

Risks and challenges
Like any ambitious project, we will certainly face our own share of risks & challenges.
Risk #1: Raising the money we need. Hopefully this Kickstarter will solve this, but it's a gamble. We believe in you, though.
Challenge #1: Distribution. Once we make this sucker it's going to be an uphill challenge for us. We are making an unconventional film with no real ties to the film industry ourselves. We feel confident we can figure this part out.
Challenge #2: Tracking down all the artists we want to include. Once we raise the money, we want to fast track the process to completion. We've been sitting on the side lines with this movie for the past year and want to get it done. It's gonna be crunch time to track down everyone we want to include within the time frame we are giving ourselves.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
