Jean Chalopin was the undisputed king of animation in the 80s and 90s.
For 2 decades he produced the most successful animated TV shows in the world from Inspector Gadget and the Care Bears to Dennis the Menace and The Mysterious Cities of Gold.
I know, you've never even heard of him, right?
That is because outside of his native France (where he is Walt Disney) his persona was hidden behind the company's logo DIC (standing for 'Diffusion, Information Commercial')
Every kid on the planet who grew up in those two magical decades knows the DIC logo and the video jingle its shows ended with.
What you never saw was the man behind the mask, the creator, the puppet master of one of the most successful animation studios that ever was, now sadly splintered into a multitude of entities - with Chalopin long out of the industry.
But boy does he have a story to tell?
Despite the innocence of his timeless work, there was so much blood, sweat, tears and politics behind the scenes. It was a company and a journey that hit many highs and lows, riding a roller coaster into relative obscurity - whose unimaginable influence on the industry is still very strongly with us today.
Filmmaker Fred K Levit and his intrepid film crew began this project in 2012 looking for a very obscure TV show called THE TWINS OF DESTINY (1991) which was aired on ABC in 1995.
It was one of the most profound and powerful animated series from memory - recalling that it was far more mature and dark than almost anything else we kids had to watch - and it surprised us how hard it was in fact to find again after its initial airing.
This lead us to make contact with its creator Jean Chalopin. It surprised us that it was not only largely forgotten in Australia, but also in all OTHER English speaking countries (where it might have been censored) - though it enjoyed moderate successes in Europe and Asia.
Likewise, Chalopin was equally surprised that 3 grown Australian men (in their 30s) had contacted him from the other side of the world to chat with him about his least remembered show - and his personal favorite!
What began as a quest to find his beloved TWINS OF DESTINY had animorphed into a documentary about a man, his dream and a company that gifted 2 generations some of their favorite shows of their youth.
We are bound for Japan, America and France to tour the DIC studios, head offices and meet the grand wizard himself Monsieur Jean Chalopin.
Our journey begins in Melbourne (Australia) where our childhoods were enriched by DIC and their many morning and afternoon programs. It is in Melbourne where our story started on the phone with ABC, in the waiting rooms of Madman, handing out pamphlets at Anime & Pop conventions. It was from Melbourne that we contacted Jean Chalopin, who extended a hand of support, has become motivated and excited by the project and awaiting our arrival.
We have already had a number of in depth conversations with him on Skype and are so excited about the prospect of globe trotting to the far corners of the earth in our quest to tell this magnificent story...and maybe finding the elusive ENGLISH DUB of our favorite show.

Risks and challenges
This documentary could take a year, maybe two to complete.
It really depends on the availability and clashing schedules of all parties involved - from producers and writers, to animators, composers and TV executives.
The funds will be used for cheap flights, cheap accommodation and basic expenses for 3 struggling but passionate filmmakers to go out there and tell the best industry story you've ever seen. Additionally there will be a need to pay for a colorist, editor, composer and social media campaign to spread the word and get it out there.
