Hi. We're Gaming Addict Studios, a group of developers and strategy gamers from around the world who have come together to create a unique strategy MMO called Crown of the Gods™.

Crown of the Gods™ is past alpha testing and development is almost done, but we need your help to make the last leg of the journey.

We've hit our target in just 17 minutes! We want to say a huge THANK YOU to all our supporters, we can't wait to see you all in game!

Now that we've raised enough to fund the artwork for Crown of the Gods, we've got some stretch goals to work towards!

Gordon, Lisa and the team at Gaming Addict Studios have already coded the guts of Crown of the Gods™. We have a playable but ugly working game! All the core features have been implemented, and we’ve had a successful alpha test. We need to raise $5,000 to cover the cost of artwork, or Burger King’s crown will look better than ours. So we're turning to our strongest supporters to ask for contributions. We're offering beta keys, alliance name reservations, and even the opportunity to become a boss in the game. Your pledge will help us pay professional artists to work with us, as well as funding production costs to get the game off to a successful launch.

Crown of the Gods™ is an intricate, competitive strategy game, set in a vast online fantasy world.

In Crown of the Gods™, players will build an intricate network of cities, link them together with automated trade routes, and field their own style of military to create a powerful empire.

Players can be aggressive fighters, dabble in politics, become successful traders, or play however they like.

Groups of players can join together in alliances and try to win the server end game. This involves completing a challenging series of tasks, while fighting other alliances and sabotaging each other’s efforts.

The winning alliance will win the Crown of the Gods™! Runners-up will have a chance to win a lesser Crown. Servers that have been conquered will eventually close down, and new servers will open regularly.

They say the market for strategy games is pretty flooded. Well, it IS flooded - with pay-to-win freemium games that substitute money for good balance and deep strategy. Crown of the Gods™ combines fair, limited monetization with a balanced game design that minimizes micromanagement via automation, lets players decide how much risk they want to take, and gives players a shot at ultimate, total victory.

As a recent South Park episode so amusingly explained, many games on the market today are cash grabs of the most blatant sort. Players who reach the top ranks in some online games are “whales” who pay hundreds or even thousands of dollars for the privilege. Strategy games shouldn’t be about how much you spend, but how skilled and smart you are. In our opinion, a victory you've paid for is a cheap victory indeed.

However we can't run an MMO as a charity project, so there is a cash shop in Crown of the Gods™. But we strictly limit how much cash influences the outcome of the game by putting a hard cap on how many cash items you can use per day, and by making all these items available through play. Spending isn't bad per se; it's fun to have the option of spending a little to get out of a jam, or to treat ourselves to the occasional cosmetic item, but if money has an unreasonably large influence on gameplay it just ruins it for other players.

We’re veterans of the genre, so we know how much of a grind these games can become, and how many hours of the day they can consume. We've built some powerful features into Crown of the Gods™ that automate micromanagement and help manage your account when you're not online. This adds a whole new dimension to the strategy. Your ability to direct the automation effectively becomes part of the game.

While there are plenty of ways to play besides balls-to-the-wall 24/7 combat, fighting has consequences in Crown of the Gods™. Each new server is a brand new race, one that will ultimately be won by the best alliance. Every member of the winning alliance will receive the ultimate prize - the fabled Crown of the Gods™. This will be added to their profile and announced on our site so that everyone will hear of their victory. Dominating a server and winning a Crown will be a difficult, challenging achievement. Unsuccessful alliances can take pride in a battle well fought and go on to try to win another server, as new ones will be opened on a rolling basis. Winners can rest on their laurels, or go on to another server and try to do it all over again.

No other current strategy MMO combines these elements into a perfect whole. We’ve created a deeply strategic, large scale wargame that offers automation and true skill-based competition, and we really hope that people who may have dismissed the strategy genre will give it a try.

We created Crown of the Gods™ because we wanted to add something new and satisfying to the genre, to show that we can make a fantastic MMORTS without offering unfair advantages to a small percentage of players with deep pockets. We’re trying to be the change we want to see in the industry, and we hope it will inspire others to support this change.

The world of Aschendal is made up of many continents, controlled by a collection of quarrelsome, greedy deities who see the world as their personal plaything. Their divinity prevents them from directly influencing individual humans, but they are able to grant favors to cities that worship them, using armies as pawns in their world-sized board game. They spur on different alliances with buffs of blessing, pressuring them alternately to band together and to fight amongst themselves.

City management is where the game begins. Players start out by working with the terrain inside their city limits and figuring out how to optimally harvest five different types of resources. These resources can be used to recruit troops, sold on the marketplace, and used to upgrade buildings and defenses.

Players can add a variety of military production buildings to their city, allowing them to recruit many different types of troops. These troops have different strengths, weaknesses and special abilities, and can be sent to attack NPCs, fight in dungeons to earn loot, or hunt epic boss creatures and recover valuable magic items. Troops may be used to defend their own city, and can also be sent to defend other cities. Only cities that have been PvP-flagged (castled) may attack other cities, but that also exposes them to attacks from other players, and once flagged they cannot be unflagged. Troops can travel from their home city to an enemy city, which they can assault or siege, and possibly conquer or destroy.

Players can settle or conquer new cities after they've hit certain progress milestones. After initial buildings have been laid down, players can use their Building Councillor to automatically upgrade and complete buildings. They can also use the Trade Councillor to automatically send resources between cities, and use the Defense Councillor to automatically recruit troops. By creating specialized cities and trade networks, and by flagging certain cities for PvP, players can create a unique empire that fits their playstyle.

Magic items can be won by successfully slaying bosses. They can also be awarded for the completion of quests, and purchased from the shop. Players use Charisma points, which regenerate over time, to use magic items. The rate of Charisma regeneration can be affected by Research.

Maximum Charisma will increase with the player’s level, making more powerful magic items with higher Charisma costs available later in the game.

Players will need to spend resources in order to conduct Personal Research, which can increase their abilities in all areas. The Gods can also grant Research knowledge to alliances that hold citadels.

Citadels can only be built in special areas near shrines blessed by individual gods. They are very costly to make, and can be captured or destroyed by other players. When a player builds a citadel, their entire alliance receives the benefit of that citadel. Because citadels are so costly, any alliance member can contribute resources towards its construction. Cooperation is essential to success.

The world of Aschendal is divided into 36 continents with varied terrain, which are separated by oceans. Naval bases can be created on shorelines, or on inland rivers. Each continent has four portals, which will activate at semi-random times. When a portal on their continent becomes active, players will be able to send armies through the active portal. They will instantly travel to active portals on other continents, where they can attack cities and cause chaos.

To win the Crown, alliances must build a maximum-level citadel in honor of each of the eight Gods. The first, second and third alliances to complete all eight citadel will receive permanent badges showing their rank, server and alliance. These will be displayed on all winning and runner up player profiles, and are visible on all servers, as well as on the forum and in chat. The winning alliance will also have its name reserved on all future servers.

Players of Crown of the Gods™ can create and submit skins for buildings, terrain and units. If approved, these skins will be sold through the in-game shop, and the author will receive in-game credits every time a copy of their skin is sold.

The player community will also have a prominent place in the ongoing development and implementation of Crown of the Gods™. Gaming Addict Studios has begun to cultivate an active, involved user community, and will take player suggestions and feedback very seriously.

The graphics we currently have are just placeholders for us to use in development. We need a complete redesign to make our Ancient Roman-era story full of myths, deities, and warfare come alive.

We intend to hire a great 2D artist or two. In fact we’re currently looking for talented people to fill these roles! If you know anyone that’s awesome and interested, please have them mail info@gamingaddictstudios.com. We need building, terrain, dungeon, boss, troop and other miscellaneous object tiles in 64x64px and 128x128px. In total we need 62 sprites, and have budgeted $2000 for them.

We need in-game backgrounds for the site, including big scenery background with gods, warfare, castles, flaming unicorns… the usual, right? We’d like to redo our logo as well. We’ve budgeted another $750 for this.

We’re also in need of a talented comic artist. The fractious, quarreling pantheon of gods manipulating events in the land of Aschendal have a story to tell, and they want to tell that story via an ongoing comic. We’ve budgeted $750 for the initial storyline.

We estimate server costs before the game becomes self-sufficient to be $1500.

Risks and challenges

The project has several manageable risks, including hardware failure, personal injuries, unforeseen development problems and other unexpected troubles. These would, at worst, result in loss of time. However the game is nearing completion, and none of these circumstances will prevent release.

To ensure we remain on track, each stage of the game’s development will be visible through frequent updates on our website. We’ll detail the progress of the artwork, the programming and the testing. Please join us there! We're going to need your participation and feedback to add the finishing touches.
