Have you ever looked at a food label and thought, “Sounds good, but I have no idea what this means?” You’re not alone!
With so many food choices and claims out there, it's hard to know where to get real information. What do Cage Free, Free Range, Natural, and Organic even mean? Is there a difference?
Our food choices have a huge impact on the world. People are purchasing food with increasing concern for ethical and social issues. Consumers are demanding more locally, humanely, and sustainably-produced animal products and plant-based alternatives.
That’s where BuyingPoultry.com comes in!
For the past four years, we’ve been working with high-welfare poultry farmers and animal welfare experts to create BuyingPoultry.com—a free buying guide that takes the guesswork out of choosing the most humane and sustainable poultry products and plant-based alternatives.
Buying Poultry will list every poultry producer and poultry certification in the United Sates and also tell you how they treat their animals, their employees, and the environment.
With BuyingPoultry.com, you’ll be able to see who’s best and who’s worst in the U.S. and in your local grocery store. We’ll list what each company can do better and make it easy for you to add your voice to the cause. We’ll also give you information about the best plant-based alternatives and where you can find them.
Best of all, it’ll be FREE and easy to access on your computer, smartphone, or tablet.
Seems like a great idea, right? We think so too.
But creating a free tool that is comprehensive, authoritative, and functional isn’t as easy as it sounds. We have an amazing team of animal welfare experts and digital ninjas assembled to make Buying Poultry a reality. Now all we need is your support!
No farmed animals suffer more than poultry. This can be true of free range, organic, and even pastured birds.
See what we mean?
BuyingPoultry.com will tell you how producers treat their animals and the environment to help you find alternatives to factory farming.
WHERE'S THE MONEY GOING?
So here’s where you come in.
We need to raise $40,000 to get this project off the ground and up and running. The money we raise on Kickstarter will go toward designing Buying Poultry, building and programming the databases, and paying for servers to house it.
To show our appreciation, we’ve got some great rewards for our backers!
Our goal is to connect good farmers with consumers. BuyingPoultry.com will empower you with information to make the best food choices for yourself, your family, farmed animals, and the environment. It's time to choose better.Buying power counts!
The more people who support our project, the more power all of us will have to make a difference in the way our nation eats and farms. Every dollar, every share, every tweet counts toward making BuyingPoultry.com a reality. Are you in?
TELL ME MORE
Absolutely! BuyingPoultry.com is a project of Farm Forward, a nonprofit advocacy and consulting group driven to transform the way our nation eats and farms. We use a wide range of innovative strategies to promote conscientious food choices, reduce farmed animal suffering, and advance sustainable agriculture.
More than four years of Farm Forward research will provide consumers with rankings and grades for all poultry products and plant-based alternatives found in U.S. grocery stores.
We want BuyingPoultry.com to be the first reliable resource that will help consumers distinguish the best from the rest.
In turn, connecting high-welfare farmers with conscientious consumers will shift the market share toward producers who who treat farmed animals more humanely.
Farm Forward’s supporters include Martha Stewart, Margaret Atwood, David Sedaris, Jonathan Franzen, and Jonathan Safran Foer. We hope you’ll join us too!
Risks and challenges
Even for a team of experts, providing guidance to consumers about the poultry industry presents a huge challenge. To create BuyingPoultry.com, we have to 1) compile data on thousands of farms, food manufacturers, and retailers, 2) establish sophisticated welfare criteria and guidelines to categorize and rate the products featured on our site, and 3) build a sophisticated web application that makes all of this information simple for consumers to use and understand. Big job, right? Farm Forward has been tackling these challenges since we came up with the idea for BuyingPoultry.com in 2009. We have already completed detailed plans for executing each aspect of the project and have spent the past four years consulting with experts and stakeholders to refine our approach. To execute our plans, we have assembled an all-star team of experts in farming, animal welfare, web development, data visualization, and marketing. Once funding is secured, our central challenge will be building a critical mass of users who use the site to change the way our nation eats and farms. We're ready to meet the challenge, but we can't do it without your help.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
