For the past four years, we’ve been working with high-welfare poultry farmers and animal welfare experts to create BuyingPoultry.com—a free buying guide that takes the guesswork out of choosing the most humane and sustainable poultry products and plant-based alternatives.
Buying Poultry will list every poultry producer and poultry certification in the United Sates and also tell you how they treat their animals, their employees, and the environment.
With BuyingPoultry.com, you’ll be able to see who’s best and who’s worst in the U.S. and in your local grocery store. We’ll list what each company can do better and make it easy for you to add your voice to the cause. We’ll also give you information about the best plant-based alternatives and where you can find them.
Best of all, it’ll be FREE and easy to access on your computer, smartphone, or tablet.

But creating a free tool that is comprehensive, authoritative, and functional isn’t as easy as it sounds. We have an amazing team of animal welfare experts and digital ninjas assembled to make Buying Poultry a reality. Now all we need is your support!

We use a wide range of innovative strategies to promote conscientious food choices, reduce farmed animal suffering, and advance sustainable agriculture.
More than four years of Farm Forward research will provide consumers with rankings and grades for all poultry products and plant-based alternatives found in U.S. grocery stores.

Risks and challenges
Even for a team of experts, providing guidance to consumers about the poultry industry presents a huge challenge. To create BuyingPoultry.com, we have to 1) compile data on thousands of farms, food manufacturers, and retailers, 2) establish sophisticated welfare criteria and guidelines to categorize and rate the products featured on our site, and 3) build a sophisticated web application that makes all of this information simple for consumers to use and understand. Big job, right? Farm Forward has been tackling these challenges since we came up with the idea for BuyingPoultry.com in 2009. We have already completed detailed plans for executing each aspect of the project and have spent the past four years consulting with experts and stakeholders to refine our approach. To execute our plans, we have assembled an all-star team of experts in farming, animal welfare, web development, data visualization, and marketing. Once funding is secured, our central challenge will be building a critical mass of users who use the site to change the way our nation eats and farms.
