Last winter, The Documents coordinated the Dark Dining Room house concert series at the Wistariahurst Museum in Holyoke, Massachusetts. We had the great fortune of being able to wander around this glorious old museum at night. I would uncover the piano in the big music room and play a song or two. Greg would sneak up to the balcony to take a photo. It was dark and still. We felt like we were little dots on a timeline that would go on long after our time there. For me, that's what our music has always felt like. The songs we make together seem like they are finding us again but were constructed long ago.
The February museum show featured a set by our old friend Mark Schwaber. His new songs absolutely floored us. Reconnecting with him, we started collaborating on a number of songs. We asked him to play bass with us at our own show in May there at the museum. The four of us (Me, Greg, Alex, and Mark) rehearsed in the music room a few times, late at night. I played the grand piano, Alex and I sang, and the walls echoed.
We've nailed down a good 7 songs that we've been playing in this configuration of The Documents that we'd really like to record as an EP. Our last record came mostly from me, initially. The band was really born out of studio afterwards. This time, it's much less Matthew Larsen and a lot more The Documents.
We're calling this EP, "Flattened Out Like The Lake In The Morning." The accompanying video was shot by our friend Rosie Walunas. It was shot at a house concert we did in August, 2014.
Risks and challenges
Our main challenge is finding a good producer and scheduling time. We are eager to get this project underway but there could be a risk of not meeting our anticipated March 2015 release date if recording and scheduling takes longer than expected. We have worked through the songs and are well rehearsed. We just need to find someone who understands our sound and is able to record us in a reasonable timeframe. We are hoping to secure a few non-studio recording locations as well. We'd like to use a tuned baby grand piano for this recording if possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
