About this project
What is Craft/Work?
Craft/Work is a month long exhibit at Beauty & Brawn Gallery that aims to jump-start a conversation about the sometimes fraught relationship between Art and Craft. The project will include a series of six bi-weekly lectures and demonstrations by participating artists/crafters in which they explore their own work, inspirations and technical skills.
Why is this important?
There's a divide- "crafters" make things we use while "artists" create pieces that represent a concept. But sometimes they overlap- sometimes a quilt or an embroidery engages in a conversation about culture or history or gender. We feel like we're missing an accessible vocabulary with which to talk about this phenomenon without hackles being raised and toes being tread upon. It feels like such a waste of awesome creativity! What is it about our culture and our histories that have created such a divide? Is the separation still important? How/why are we still holding on to it? This exhibit and lecture series will push some of the boundaries between art work and craft work, and create a welcoming space where makers can start talking about their work in a new light.
Who are we?
We are artists, crafters and teachers. Although we come from different artistic backgrounds, we find ourselves continuously negotiating the divide between art and craft; especially within the realm of textiles and how it effects and is effected by gender.
What will your money do?
Although we have a free gallery space for the show, we need to pay rent for the workshop series leading up to it. We also need funds for workshop supplies, and to offer small honorariums to the artists giving talks. Your money will help this project to be a productive experience for everyone involved, ensuring that all of our events can be free and open to the public. And also fund snacks: because snacks are imperative. Obviously.
How can you get involved?
The more voices we have, the more interesting the conversation: we want to hear from you! Submit a piece to the show! We’ll have a call for artists coming out imminently! Are you in Chicago? Attend the workshop series! Not from the Chicago area? Not to worry! The lectures will be recorded as podcasts and made available to the public! Engage with social media! Craft/work can be found on Tumblr, Twitter (craftworkshow), and Facebook.

Risks and challenges
In whatever capacity possible, Craft/Work is definitely going to take place in April of next year. Your support allows us to fulfill all of our community-based goals listed above. As experienced craft producers and vendors we feel like we've given ourselves a generous timeline for producing and shipping our rewards but we recognize that life happens. While we expect to ship most of our rewards way before the estimate it is possible that this might not be the case.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
