About

Enferi is a third person hack and slash ARPG with 1-4 player online co-op  and split screen support. The game is meant to challenge the players to test their skills and advance further into the game. Hack and Slash fans can now enjoy the simple, engaging and addictive gameplay of zombie mode games mixed with their favourite genre. No more lengthy catching up to the level and gear of your friends in order to comfortably play with them, just grab a controller and you’re good to go!

Armed with an electrified bastard sword, dual grappling guns and an array of dark magic, players have to survive the Enferi and their bosses for as long as they can in an increasingly difficult environment. Featuring classic hack and slash gameplay, mixed with a Batman/Mordor like combat system, fantasy/steampunk environments, leader boards, levelling and permanent death on all major platforms, players can soon compete for bragging rights, personal glory or just a fun evening on the couch with friends!

  • Fast paced hack and slash combat with levelling system, allowing you to amplify your magic, dual Winchesters, strength and health.
  • Combat system like Batman and Shadow of Mordor
  • Zombie/horde mode gameplay with Permanent Death
  • 1-4 player online co-op
  • 1-4 player split screen mode
  • 5-6 stages with different environments and bosses that can be explored by the players. No procedural generated dungeons, every session will be exactly the same to keep the leaderboards balanced.
  • Motion Captured Animations (Current animations are hand made)
  • Planned release on Steam(PC), Playstation 4, Xbox One and the Nintendo Switch
  • 4 leader boards for 1-4 players online co-op
  • Achievements and cosmetic customisation (after early access)
  • Tutorial level for new players

The game was inspired by the horde mode from Warhammer 40k Space Marines, mixed with the gameplay style from games like Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry, Bloodborne, the combat system from games like Batman and Shadow of Mordor and the addictive and fun nature of zombie mode games like Black-Ops or Killing Floor. For years I’ve been waiting for an ARPG that would allow players to enjoy a fast paced realistic looking Hack and Slash game with friends without having to grind and gear-up for hours and days before you could enjoy the game with your friends.

In a world where time is limited, people might not have the time to level-up and just have a few hours per week for some gaming. Which leaves you very little time to enjoy RPG’s, with their deep mechanics and vast locations. RPG’s generally aren’t ideal to play once in a while, like shooters or race games for example.

And this was the idea behind Enferi, the game is designed the be an easy to pick up and hard to master game that can be played for a few hours with your friends or on a solo adventure, without having to spend a lot of time setting up. Enferi is best viewed as the hack and slash counterpart of zombie mode games like Black Ops and Killing Floor. Every player has an equal chance to be on top of the board, even if you’ve spend hours, days or weeks grinding, all players start the session at the same level and with the same stats. That way, it all comes down to the player’s skills and not their time spend in the game.

Players begin the game session in the first stage of Enferi, players have to survive the demonic Enferi until the first boss will spawn. This boss has to be beaten in 5 minutes in order to advance to the next stage. In the meantime, players will earn experience points, that they can use to level-up their characters that tailor their playstyle or the needs of the team. If the players die and don’t receive a revive from their teammates, the session ends. Once the session has ended, the players start all over again, from the first stage, with their levels reset. The game will feature permanent death.

Permanent Death might seem like a harsh or scary game mechanic, but the game isn’t meant to be completed by the players. The game will feature leaderboards to see which players can outlast the Enferi the longest. Players can fight for the first place in the most difficult leaderboard, the solo session, try and beat their own personal record, or invite a friend and beat the co-op leaderboards together. Got some friends over? No problem, just give them a gamepad and enjoy the game in split screen mode up to 4 players!

The game will take place in the dungeons of the Enferi, the players will start in the first stage of these dungeons. Once the boss has been defeated, the player descend to the next stage and delve deeper into the dungeons. Each stage will be indoors to make full use of the movement mechanics of the grappling hooks. The stages will feature separate environments that can be used to the players advantage. The level shown in the trailer will give you an idea of the style of the environments. The final version of the stage will be bigger to accommodate 4 players, as the current stage might get a bit crowded. The quality of environments will also increase since I will be hiring an environment artist to help out, I personally am not an environment artist.

On release, the game will feature Tier 1 of the Enferi stages, as described above. Once the game has been released and has acquired a large user base, work will begin on creating more Tiers that the players can enjoy. These additional Tiers will be added to the game in the form of Downloadable Content, for a small fee. The player is in no way obligated to acquire these Tiers, as the game can still be played without these Tiers, they only won’t have access to these Tiers, their leaderboards and perhaps even their separate game modes.

Enferi won’t be supporting player rankings on early access release, these rankings require complex statistics to work properly and these statistics would get in the way of creating a fun game to play. Initially, the game will be as simple as it should be, once the game is set, rankings can be explored once the community is growing, but this will be explored later on, it’s not a release feature.

However, Enferi will feature achievements after early access has concluded and the full game is being released. These achievements will go hand in hand with certain cosmetic customisations for your characters. That way people can see what kind of achievements you’ve had and how far you’ve come in the game. Which indirectly, gives them an indication about your skillset.

In the current stage of development, the core of the gameplay is basically set. The combat of the game is nearly completed, there are still some combo’s that need to added to the game, such as the ultimate moves. The animations in the game still need some smoothing, especially the transitions between animations. I chose to pick speed over perfection in order to give you a more complete impression of the game.

Split screen mode is ready and working as it should. The framework for online co-op is set and working correctly. The only thing left to do is get every animation working as it should. Since Unreal has multiplayer already built into the Engine, I don’t expect any problems in this regard.

What still needs to be done, is creating the other stages and the rest of the enemies and bosses. Which is actually the easiest part. The hardest part of the game is nearly completed, which was coding the gameplay.

I haven’t started working on the leaderboards yet. However, there are enough tutorials to guide me in the process, no problems are expected in this regard. And even if that doesn’t work, there are plugins and add-ons in the Unreal Marketplace to help me out.

Enferi is currently being made for Steam. With planned release for Playstation 4, Xbox One and the Switch. Steam will be first to receive the game in early acces, as this will help smooth out any problems that might arise during development. Once the bugs have been worked out, the consoles will follow shortly after.

I started this project by taking a loan to keep myself fed and to rent an office space to work. The necessary equipment and software is already in place. This has allowed me to work fulltime since the beginning of this year. However, I need more time to finish this project and get the game to steam early acces. Since a lot of the necessary costs have already been made, the Kickstarter goal is modest and will be used to drag the project over the finishline.

Ideally, I would like the Kickstarter to reach beyond the Kickstarter goal, as this would allow me to hire a dedicated programmer and a level designer. The kickstarter funds will be used to continue working on the project for another 6 months and also to resubscribe to the 3ds Max licence. However, I can’t make a promise on the release date, the game is done, when the game is done.

All backers will appear in the game credits, with special placement for the upper Tiers, Veteran Demon Hunters and above.

If you are new to Kickstarter, Kickstarter pledges will only be withdrawn when the project reaches it's goal, and they will be withdrawn at the end of the campaign, not immediately.

As you may have noticed, I’m currently a solo developer working on Enferi in Arnhem the Netherlands. I’ve been studying and working on game projects for 10 years now including multiple internships. I’ve specialised myself in Character creation and Animations, with over 4000 hours of experience and more than 1,5 years of experience with visual scripting in the Unreal Engine.

I’ve studied Communications and Multimedia Design at the University of Applied Sciences in Arnhem, in my second year, I started on the Game Design semester, working on my very first character. From that moment on, I knew I wanted to work in the gaming industry. I loved creating characters in 3D and see them come alive once I animated them. I also knew that in order to work in this industry, you have to work hard and keep pushing yourself to be a better artist, to learn new ways of designing, improve your workflow and pick up your speed.

In order to do that, I decided to stop school for a few years, learn new programs, work on my portfolio and pick up my speed. I made the choice to have a break from school, because combining a full time study plus working 24 hours a week, leaves very little time to improve your skills in designing. When I came back to school, I dedicated all of my projects to 3D Design and graduated 2 years ago.

Over the years, I have developed a professional workflow that takes me from inspirational moodboards, to sketching, to 3D model, to motion video recordings, to animation in order to get the best results as an artist. It allows me to create objects and characters in a fast but professional manner.

After graduating, I focussed myself on creating a business plan and starting a business that could allow me to create the game that I’ve always wanted to play. In order to do that, I took a business loan from a bank to get the project rolling. The result of that loan is what you see before you. The reason I took that loan, is because it allowed me to work solely on this project without spending time on side projects. And this greatly increases your production speed. Without this loan, it would have taken me years and years to get this far, if I made it at all.

The project will see it’s release because it isn’t overly complex to make. At it’s core, Enferi is a hack and slash game with online functionality. There isn’t much else to it. I’ve kept the concept clean and simple because it’s easy to finish, but very much fun to play. Even when you haven’t played it in forever, you can simply pick up your controller and get back on the horse. There is no need to remember where you were, what you were doing or whether you picked up a certain item or not. It’s just simple fun and violence.

But I do need your help in order to finish this project, I have come a long way in development of Enferi, but I need this Kickstarter to work, or the game won’t see it’s release. My funds are running out, and if I have to start working on separate jobs, the game will never be released. I’ve come so far because I dedicated myself to this project and I want to see it finished. I want to see the game released because it’s the one thing the hack and slash genre is lacking, a simple and fun multiplayer experience. In my mind, it’s the perfect combination for people who love to be on top of the game and people who don’t have all the time in the world but do need their hack and slash fix.

Risks and challenges

To keep you in the loop, I will open and maintain an open development blog that backers and everyone can follow and read. This blog will feature updates on progress of the game, setback and the duration of the project. This blog will be featured on enferi.com and will be updated every week. If you have any questions or suggestions, I’d love to hear them! I’ll be active on Social Media (Twitter and Instagram) or you can contact me via e-mail.

Although I’ve kept the concept as simple as I possibly can, there are always risks in developing games. However, by using the Unreal Engine combined with Visual Scripting(Blueprints), there is a large margin for error. There was no need to develop an Engine from scratch, the Unreal Engine is a tried and true engine used for many games.

Currently the game is running on a steady 80-90fps on a system with a single 1060 graphics card. Nothing mind-blowing, it runs smoothly on split screen mode with no problems on the horizon. I may not be able to promise you the full 60FPS, but I can certainly guarantee the 30fps.

I’m not pushing the engine to it’s limit with 64 players online or MMO style gameplay. I’m keeping the game as simple as possible to keep the risks at bay. The online features of the Engine are already on board, all I have to do is connect the dots in the right order and the game is good to go.

Even the features and rewards are kept as simple as possible to give you a stable environment where you can test your meddle against the forces of the Enferi, and the world. Will you join me on this epic quest?

Thank you for visiting this Kickstarter project, I hope you consider pledging to this cause, it would bring me great joy to see this project come to fruition. It would be great if I got to fight the Enferi side by side with you guys and gals, see you in the darkness!
