About this project
What is Urban Acres?
What started as a few friends traveling the dirt roads of Texas in a Volkswagen Rabbit has become the source of local, organic food for several thousand people in the Dallas metroplex. At Urban Acres, our goal is to provide our community with the very best local and organic foods while supporting Texas farm families and artisans. So, we created a “co-op style” produce system with pick-up locations all over Dallas that makes shopping easy and trying new veggies fun.

Why an Urban Farmstead?
We were so inspired, by our good friend Joel Salatin of Polyface Farms during his visit to Dallas for The Stewards Dinner, at the thought of farming for profit and not just because it’s the right thing to do. We can’t imagine a future for Urban Acres without farming. Farming our own food creates jobs, lowers environmental impact and gives us an even greater ability to effect real change in the way DFW interacts with food. So our huge dream is starting in a small way with with this project.

We want to create a small oasis, (1300 sq ft) in the historic neighborhood of Oak Cliff right in the heart of Dallas, that brings together the best of Texas farms and local artisans under one roof. Imagine a place where patrons can enjoy deliciously prepared local food, learn about aquaponic gardening, the importance of bees, feed chickens and enjoy a cup of locally roasted coffee in a rocking chair on our front porch. A place for our community to interact over food and the idea that local food matters to take root while sipping ice tea. It might be the craziest thing we’ve dreamed up, but so was bringing organic fruits and veggies from Texas farmers into the city and because of the Urban Acres Family we have been able to make that a reality.

Risks and challenges
When it comes to building out a new location you are always at the mercy of the city and permits. So far we have been able to work through them but any delays we face will be because of this process. So our hope is any set back simply delays us out a bit.
Our farmers are helping us with greenhouses and the set up of the garden, fish, chickens, and bees so we feel this will go smoothly with only the bumps that come with dealing with mother nature!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
