Have you ever wanted to combine your love of baking with your love of comics? Have you ever looked at a cookbook and thought, "This would be better with some rad X-Men art?" Well, you’re in luck, because we’ve got just the book for you! The Guide to X-Ceptional Baking combines our love of tasty baked goods and X-Men into one beautiful, fan-made art/cookbook.
The Guide to X-Ceptional Baking started off as a small project between us and a handful of close friends. What was at first a small zine turned into a much larger fan project overnight. After seeing a huge amount of interest in response to the idea of an X-Men based cookbook, we decided that it deserved much more care than just printer paper and staples. We want to be able to deliver a nice cookbook that also functions as an art book, and will be sturdy enough to last through a little bit of wear and tear in the kitchen.
All of the art, recipes, and other contributions have been submitted and the book is mostly complete at this point. The only steps to be taken are finalizing the format of some of the pages and making sure this book is as shiny as possible.
The Guide to X-Ceptional Baking is an 8"x10", 50+ page, wire bound X-Men themed cookbook and zine full of art, recipes, crafts, and lots and lots of love, by an amazing group of artists and contributors from all across the X-fandom. Our goal here was to make something that was beautiful to look at just like an illustrated cookbook, but with the fun of the X-Men and comics baked in, with easy and versatile recipes. No matter your baking prowess you’ll find a recipe here for you!

Where is the money from the Kickstarter goal going?
In order to be prepared for this campaign, we've gotten estimates for everything from shipping to processing fees for an initial 100 book printing run. As organizers, we are not seeking to make profit off this–we just want this book to exist and be the best book that it can be. We also want to be completely transparent, so the breakdown of the costs is below.
- Printing Costs: $1,187
- Shipping: $350
- Contributor Compensation: $1,008
- Administrative Costs: $300
- Processing Fees: $316 ($158 each for Platform & Payment Fees)
- Cushion: $311
If we exceed our goal, we will be able to pay our wonderful contributors more (in proportion to other costs as above), as well as fund additional print runs of the books.
Who's Behind the Project?
Charlie is a writer, podcaster, and X-Men and baking enthusiast X-traodinare. They are the organizer, social media manager, and editor for The Guide to X-Ceptional Baking. Outside of this project, they have been hard at work providing comics reviews for sites like WWAC. You can find them @geneticghost on Twitter!
Mikey is an engineer, tabletop roleplaying game designer, Twitch broadcaster, and one half of The Young Ones comics podcast in partnership with Charlie. He is the graphic designer, layout artist, and co-editor for The Guide to X-Ceptional Baking, as well as creating the graphics and video for this page. Outside of this project, he streams weekly on his Twitch channel, as well as working on his surreal mystery tabletop RPG, No Place Like Home. You can find that game, and all of his other projects, on his website.
Risks and challenges
No project is without its risks, but our main goal is to fund this project to cover printing costs and makes sure that the people who contributed get paid for their hard work. The kickstarter goal is the minimum we need to achieve both of those goals. The PDF will exist no matter what. We just need your help to make the printed book all that it can be!
The printing shop we are working with has a reasonably fast turnaround; so the greatest risk in turnaround time is shipping and fulfillment. However, frequent updates will be made to the progress of the campaign, and should there be delays of any kind, backers will be notified. Deadlines are very important to us so should something happen, we will be on top of it.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
