Everything we use today has some form of electronics. Our cell phones and computers use powerful microprocessors, electronic components and circuits. However learning about electronics and circuits is usually considered dry and boring. It does not have to be that way.

Wearable Electronics are becoming extremely popular - smart watches, wearable fitness trackers, virtual reality glasses, and more! Now imagine creating your OWN wearable electronics. Real learning happens by doing. By designing, creating, and programming their own wearable tech, students build their confidence and have a higher chance of pursuing a tech career. DIY Wearables is not just for students - it is for everyone! Maybe you make a personalized holiday ornament or special friendship bracelet. Or perhaps it is a light up tie or pair of earrings! Maybe you DIY your own bicycle safety jacket.

Fiat Lux means “Let there be light”, and is the perfect tool for classrooms and creative projects. The Fiat Lux controller is an Arduino-compatible, compact board specifically designed for wearable projects. Projects range from a basic circuit to more complex gadgets.

We named our microcontroller "Fiat Lux" as it, quite literally, lights up ideas and sparks creative projects. That moment when a student's expression completely changes when they light up their first LED - that's everything! That moment is what the Fiat Lux Wearable Kit encourages. The Fiat Lux features an on-board "pixelite", photocell, buzzer, and push button for a great learning experience.

 We currently have three types of kits:

1. Intro to Wearable Circuits

2. Fiat Lux Starter Kit

3. Fiat Lux Kit

Intro to Wearable Circuits - Introduces the basics of electronics with conductive thread, LED Shines, and a switch. Sew your first circuit design and then use your skills to make something like a bowtie!

Contents Include:

  • LED Shines (in Red, Green, White, and Blue)
  • Coin Cell Battery Holder with on-board switch
  • Coin Cell (CR2032)
  • Conductive Thread, Needles, and Threader
  • Aida Cloth

Fiat Lux Starter Kit - The starter kit includes everything needed to introduce users to basic electronics and create their own unique projects. Users may use the kit alone or take an everyday item and light it up.

Contents Include:

  • Fiat Lux
  • LED Shines (in Red, Green, White, and Blue)
  • Pixelites (smart RGB LEDs)
  • Alligator Clips
  • Conductive Thread, Needle, Needle Threader
  • Aida Cloth
  • Battery Holder (AAA)

Fiat Lux Kit - The full kit will allow you to create unique projects with extra materials.

Contents Include:

  • Fiat Lux
  • LED Shines (in Red, Green, White, and Blue)
  • Pixelites (smart RGB LEDs)
  • Pixelite Ring (17 smart Pixelites in a ring)
  • Alligator Clips
  • Conductive Thread, Needle, Needle Threader
  • Aida Cloth
  • Light Sensor
  • Lipo Battery & Charger

To control creations, students will learn how to program their Fiat Lux in the C language using Arduino. Younger students can program using our graphical programming interface which automatically generates the corresponding C code on the side of the screen. We have worked hard to make this possible so that the Fiat Lux is within reach of younger students.

Hardware is incomplete without software. To reach students early-on, we developed an easy-to-use, graphical programming interface that allows students as young as elementary school to bring their projects to life. The Fiat Lux Kit is the only wearable electronics kit to have a graphical programming option for users.

We will have a User Manual introducing electronics and suggested projects available for all students. We are currently working on this as we speak!

We'll also have video tutorials introducing skills like basic sewing, discussion of electricity & current, and programming in C and MiniBloq (our graphical programming interface).

We've already made Video Tutorial for a prior campaign and have had thousands of views and lots of positive response. We know what works well and what does not work and are confident we can prepare the best educational tools for our Fiat Lux Wearable Electronics kit.

The Fiat Lux is the perfect tool for students, teachers, hobbyists, and designers. 

  • Students in 3rd - 5th grade - create simple designs and program them with our graphical programming option. 
  • Middle school and up - program creations using the C language. Projects range in complexity, from wall art to intricate Halloween costumes.  
  • Educators- offer wearable electronics courses and workshops. Use the Fiat Lux Kit in STEM or design classrooms!
  • Designers - custom make an outfit for everyday work or the next upcoming music festival. Anyone can be a designer, all you need is an everyday object and the Fiat Lux! 

Design and Development - We’ve spent the last year designing and developing the Fiat Lux. We’ve gone through a series of prototyping versions (we are on V5 for the Fiat Lux board) to optimize the board and its capabilities. We are excited to say that the board is on its final round of improvements!

Testing - We conducted small scale field tests in the classroom with students and numerous creative projects. Students were given the kit, introduced to electronics, and given time to design their own projects from the materials given. We received great and positive feedback. 

Manufacturing - We have a identified a manufacturer and know the costs of production. We've worked with this manufacturer for our Pi-Bot campaign and throughout the testing of the Fiat Lux Starter Kit.

We (Melissa and Lavanya Jawaharlal) are co-founders of STEM Center USA - and hands-on STEM education program that inspires the next generation of technology leaders. We run a robotics creativity center for students from 5 years old and up. Students attend on a weekly basis to design, build, and program. Our programs sparked the development of the Pi-Bot and "The Technical Alphabet" - two products we successfully brought to life via Kickstarter. Both are currently in full production and available for sale on STEM Center USA's shop site.

Our center combines robotics, the maker movement, and hands-on STEM experimentation for a “structured chaos” creative space. Melissa is a recent engineering graduate of USC and has worked previously at Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems and Vandenberg Air Force Base. Lavanya is a senior studying Mechanical Engineering at UC Berkeley where she also serves as the Executive Vice President (EVP) of the 36,000 member student body.

STEM Center USA has been recognized by Vice President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden. In 2014, Melissa & Lavanya Jawaharlal visited their official residence in Washington, D.C. On October 30, 2015, the Jawa Sisters pitched STEM Center USA on the ABC show "Shark Tank."

The Fiat Lux Wearable Electronics Kit is an education system that will engage users of all ages and spark users’ creativity. The possibilities are endless and it is up to the imagination of students. But we need your help to make this happen!

We work to make learning fun and meaningful. The Fiat Lux does just that.

  • Provides an introduction to basic electronics
  • Introduces users to programming in two languages: C and Graphical Programming!
  • Helps students understand the multi-disciplinary nature of modern engineering design
  • Inspires students to pursue a STEM field
  • Gives users the confidence to undertake challenging projects
  • Excites them to practice creativity through project oriented designs

Wearable technology is not new. Rings and personal jewelry items perhaps were the first wearables and they are still popular. German inventor Julius Neubronner invented the first light weight camera, which was strapped to pigeons to take aerial photos. Wearables have come a long way, and in the last few years there is an explosive growth in this field from google glass to Apple Watch. E-textiles are now becoming popular. E-textiles are fabrics that have embedded small controllers. 

Dr. Leah Buechley, who is an Associate Professor at the MIT Media was the first one create the first sewable microcontroller. She created the Lilypad wearable platform in 2007. Limor Fried, founder of Adafruit, created a new wearable platform, Flora, which has become popular among hobbyists. We have great admiration for Dr. Leah Buechley and Limor Fried.

Our wearable new platform called Fiat Lux was developed for electronics education, programming, and practicing creativity. Fiat Lux is an Arduino compatible wearable round board (50 mm diameter). It has an on board Pixelite (smart RGB LED), buzzer, push button and photocell. These are salient features of Fiat Lux. Fiat Lux can be programmed using Arduino IDE. To ensure that anyone can use Fiat Lux, we have developed an easy to use graphical interface. This is a very unique feature available only for Fiat Lux. Fiat Lux comes with complete curriculum.

Risks and challenges

Graphics: Please note that the images shown in the pictures and video depict our creative projects and not the exact contents of our kit. All images of electronics are also our current prototypes. Since we are continually improving our boards and materials, your kits many contain parts different from what is shown above.

Shipping: We are only able to estimate shipping times and the required timeline for production. While we have included US shipping in all of our pledges, we have learned from previous campaigns that we need to add a fee for international shopping.
