Director's Commentary: Terror of Frankenstein is an original commentary track for an existing 1970s-era Frankenstein movie. This project transforms the film into an entirely new, all too human, horror story. It’s less Mystery Science Theater 3000 and more Sartre, an icy satire of the monsters onscreen, behind the camera, and in the audience.
WHO WE ARE
Rodney Ascher and Tim Kirk are the guys behind Room 237 and The Nightmare. Director's Commentary: Terror of Frankenstein is their third feature collaboration. They are also pals.
Joining the team is co-writer Jay Kirk, author of Kingdom Under Glass, and a contributor to GQ, Harper's, and The New York Times Magazine. Jay and Tim share a grandmother.
TERROR OF FRANKENSTEIN IS A REAL FILM
It was filmed in Sweden and Ireland in 1977 and stars Leon Vitali as Victor Frankenstein. It is considered one of the most faithful adaptations of Mary Shelley's famous novel.
Our DIRECTOR'S COMMENTARY reunites director, writer and star for the first time since the explosive trial that followed the release of the film. They discuss the making of the film, the tragic events that haunted it, and the cult following that has made it a perennial Midnight Movie.
We promise you that what you learn about this film will be brand new!
WHY DID WE MAKE THIS?
Tim speaking: When my daughter was born, I knew I wanted to make films that created a new way of looking at the greatest horror films about fatherhood. Having just completed a film about THE SHINING, it was time to tackle #2. FRANKENSTEIN.
My cousin Jay had a similar fascination with The Man Who Made A Monster.
Rodney here for a sec: I'm especially fascinated by experimenting with format, remixes, and genre-blurring, so I loved the idea of an agonizing horror/drama (with maybe a few laughs) inserted into a commentary track. When I met Leon Vitali at The Stanley Film Festival in Colorado, the choice of Frankenstein films to start from got a whole lot easier (assuming he would agree to do it…)
Quick answer is: we had to.
CLU GULAGER has appeared in countless films, perhaps most memorably in THE LAST PICTURE SHOW, THE KILLERS and RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD.
ZACK NORMAN is a best known for his work in ROMANCING THE STONE, FESTIVAL AT CANNES and CADILLAC MAN.
LEON VITALI is an actor and producer. Besides playing Victor Frankenstein in TERROR OF FRANKENSTEIN, he played Lord Bullingdon in BARRY LYNDON and then worked closely with Stanley Kubrick for the rest of Kubrick's life.
THE FILM IS FINISHED (ALMOST)
We've completed production and post production on the film. But we need some funds to get us to the finish line. That's why we are asking for your help.
We've assembled some fun rewards that will let you experience the film, plus get an insider's peek into the world of Terror of Frankenstein. We'll be updating the site with props from the film. And new discoveries and mementos from the trial. And memorabilia from the "Frankheads," the most devout followers of the film.
All this will be available to all backers in a DIGITAL ARCHIVE which will be updated often over the next month.
We plan on making this site as much fun as we had making the film. We appreciate your support and look forward to sharing the film!
Risks and challenges
The project is very close to completion. Much of the funds raised here will go to completing our film and working out various platforms for distribution. We will first be screening the film at festivals and local theaters. Next up is the DVD and streaming. We are working with some great people on this.
If for some unforeseen reason there is a problem with any of these methods of distribution (and we seriously don't think there will be a problem), there is a Plan B which will get the project out there.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
