Big Bad Con is an RPG and LARP convention happening October 14-16 in the Bay Area. For the past five years we've put on amazing and welcoming events full of great games and great people.

This year, we're doing even more!

New venue with more space

Big Bad Con is moving to the Walnut Creek Marriott. In our new home we'll have:

  • 4000 more square feet that we had at the Hilton!
  • Absolutely beautiful spaces to game and socialize in: a great lobby, several comfy nooks, and secret passages between rooms!
  • Free Wi-fi for all attendees.
  • Discounted valet parking for all attendees.
  • All-gender bathrooms.
  • 20 private gaming rooms.
  • Over 100 restaurants in a 3-miles radius. Over a dozen in a 3-block radius. The hotel shuttle will take you to any of them!
  • Convenient access: just three blocks from BART, and a shuttle service to pick up and drop you off!

Big Bad Teens

For years, parents have told us that they love gaming with their kids and want to bring them to the con. We've listened!

This year we'll have a dedicated space for teens between 13 and 17, full of games, workshops, and other special events.

Big Bad Teens will be led by Becky Thomas and Steve Kani, who run the Abantey Roleplay Workshop  the young player rooms at KublaCon, DundraCon, and CelestiCon. To learn more about the teens track and their work, check out The Future of Gaming.

Based on increased hotel costs and our expanding size, we're looking to raise $2500. Doing so means we can:

  • Add the Big Bad Teens track for gamers 13-17.
  • Offer 20 private gaming rooms.
  • Keep badge prices at $40.
  • Offer free badges to GMs and volunteers.

Financial Breakdown from 2015

Despite the challenges presented during the remodel, it was a boon for the con because the hotel heavily discounted the costs as compensation for the last minute change. This means that for the first time we are able to roll over profits from last year, which we're going to need, because the new venue comes with a price tag!

Additional Costs in 2016

This year we'll be paying full price for the private game rooms, plus additional costs for the event space, and storage rooms (they have to put those beds somewhere!).

If we can raise $2,500 we'll be able to cover the rest of our costs through badge sales. If we rocket past that we can add some awesome stretch goals as well!

Big Bad Scholarship ($10+)

All funds collected from this pledge will go towards providing free badges and rooms for attendees who would otherwise not be able to attend.

Additionally, Justin R Evans will be including free downloads of a Scholarship Bundle including:

  • Sins and Virtues: A tool to help you flesh out NPC personalities on the fly.
  • Sanity Decks: For when you need to give you players that little push ... over the edge.
  • Ribbons: A novel that asks: what if some of the people who do those crap jobs in Las Vegas are actually angels ... or demons ... or something in between?

Back at $30 or more and this will include a Big Bad Shout Out reward.

Adding a Scholarship to another pledge: You can add a scholarship to any other pledge level by increasing your pledge by $10 (or more). When the campaign closes and the Backerkit emails go out, you can assign the extra to the scholarship fund!

He was a keynote speaker at the first Living Games Conference in New York City and will present at the 2016 Games for Change festival, both times concerning educational larps. He has created or co-created 17 edu-larps for four schools in Los Angeles and consulted with Texas State University about their nursing simulation program. He teaches analog game design to junior high students at a private Jewish academy. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife Kirsten (also a veteran game designer and larper) and the feline Missekat, which means "pussycat" in Danish--an homage to Aaron's love of Nordic larps.

$14,500 - We'll bring out Jessica Price (FUNDED)

Jessica Price has worked in video games, alternate reality games/transmedia entertainment, and tabletop roleplaying games as a writer, editor, game designer and producer on everything from MMOs to Xbox titles to games involving a lot of dice. $16,000 - We'll bring out Barbara Ng (Banana Chan) (FUNDED)

Banana Chan is a live action role playing game designer and videographer originally from Ontario, Canada. She is one half of the gaming events/merchandising company/YouTube channel Game and a Curry. She is the writer and co-host of the large-scale larp, 'The Hades Holiday Party' in New York, but prefers writing smaller, weirder larps that are too obscure to function. She currently lives in New York, where she creates videos, writes games on the subway and eats lasagna.

Barb will be running these awesome Larps:

  • Vapor World: We're all one with the vaporwave. The game is based on the Internet trend (now relic) vaporwave. The players are demi-gods in a world of Microsoft screensavers and neon palm trees, attempting to become full gods of vaporwave (i.e. talking dolphins).
  • Love and Betrayal: Three players take on the role of actors in a never-ending soap opera, while a director and their assistant berate them.
  • Welcome to New Jersey: Players are going on a really, really long road trip to a gaming convention.

$20,000 - Private Game Rooms for ALL RPGs… and more! (FUNDED)

Dare to dream a dream. Since the very first day I announced Big Bad Con in 2010, one note has rung true in every gamer’s hope. Private rooms from roleplaying games.

Private rooms are the best. You can play music, decorate the room, change the lighting, turn the TV into a giant monitor, enjoy your game undisturbed by noise from other tables, and order room service. You can divide the space up, run two games that are connected, even larp in them. Private rooms are the dream.

If we hit the $20,000 mark we can afford 10 additional private rooms—for a total of 30—and ALL of our 18+ RPGs will be in private rooms. We’ll still have multi-table events like Big Bad Gauntlet or Jason’s Grand Warren in the ballroom, but every GM who wants to run a game in a private room will get one!

What will we do with all that extra space?

I’m glad you asked! The wonderful folks at Double Exposure and their Envoy program have offered to host a Social Deduction Room, featuring play-to-win copies of Ultimate Werewolf, One Night, The Resistance, and Coup, sponsored by Bezier Games and Indie Boards & Cards.

Envoy will also be offering play-to-win titles in our open gaming area. By playing a game, you will be entered in a drawing to win it at the end of the con! Last year we gave away over 40 games. This year the play-to-win program will be even bigger (and badder) than before!

 And more to come...

As we reach the milestones above, more goodness (badness?) will be added to our existing pledge levels!

Risks and challenges

This is the sixth year we have hosted Big Bad Con and every year I walk away from it exhausted from the work and elated from the success.

Obstacles we've encountered in the past include the room blocks filling up, unexpected charges from the hotel, lack of food options, hotel rooms becoming unsuitable for use, and last-minute GM cancellations.

While each of these has been a challenge, we've always pulled through by expanding our room blocks, tough hotel negotiations, bringing food trucks on-site, and calling on an array of excellent GMs to run games in a pinch!

I'm confident we can tackle any obstacles that come our way in 2016. We want to deliver the best RPG convention experience with you and for you!

Grandma's Cottage (Badge Level Reward). This is just crazy!

Your name, organization, or cause will appear on the Big Bad Con Hall of Heroes as one of our supporters. You'll also be commemorated on the website and in our program.

Additionally you'll receive a special Kickstarter-exclusive pin, a 3-day pass to attend the con, and we'll also bring a special treat to your table during one of your games. See below for what we included last year!

You'll also get a spot in a Big Bad Online game with game designer Brendan Conway and a very special Baba Yaga Mystery Box including items from our contributors as well as the convention staff!

Finally, your name, organization, or cause will be an official sponsor of the con and be featured at the registration desk!
