Big Bad Con is an RPG convention and charity drive happening this October 16-18 in Oakland, California.

  • For the past four years, Big Bad Con has brought together stellar GMs and players to play amazing games.
  • We've carved out a small community of amazing people that game together and do good together.
  • We support Doctors Without Borders ($3300 raised so far), the Alameda County Community Food Bank (1500 pounds of food collected), and Child's Play (a portion of our dealer's proceeds)!

This year we're asking for your support to provide more private game rooms, offer comped badges to GMs and Volunteers, and host special guests.

Based on increased hotel costs and our expanding size, we're looking to raise $2000. Doing so means we can:

  • Offer 19 private gaming rooms
  • Keep badge prices at $40
  • Offer free badges to GMs and volunteers.

Financial Breakdown from 2014

We rounded up a bit, and donated $500 to Doctors Without Borders, putting us just slightly in the red for the year.

Additional Costs in 2015

This year the room rates are going up from $99/night to $109/night. With our 19 private rooms, each booked for three nights, that is $570 plus taxes (~$130). We're also paying an additional $200 labor fees to have the rooms prepared.

Our math works like this:

If we can get at least most of that ($2000), along with badge purchases, that will cover enough of our costs, and we can plan our special events, printing, and food truck budget accordingly.

Pledges at these levels go towards supporting the con, and bringing others two it. They hep up keep the costs down, offer free badges, and invite special guests.

Big Bad Scholarship

All funds collected from this pledge will go towards providing free badges and rooms for attendees who would otherwise not be able to attend.

Back at $30 or more and this will include a Big Bad Shout Out reward.

Back at $50 or more and this will include a Big Bad Sponsor reward.

Big Bad Shout Out

If you back Big Bad Con at the $20 or higher level we'll immortalize your name, organization or cause on the con's Hall of Heroes, on our website, and in the program.

Big Bad Sponsor

As with the Big Bad Shout Out, but you'll have a bigger entry in the Hall of Heroes and each our of the con we'll personally tweet a thanks to one of our sponsors.

Big Bad Con Presents: You!

Some of our finest GMs have graciously offered to include your name, organization, or cause in their games. You might be a plucky sidekick, a dastardly villain, or a self destructing mainframe!

Pledging at this level supports the con and makes you a part of it (at least in name).

Here are the GMs offering you starring roles:

As with the Big Bad Con Shout out, but we'll also name one of the 19 private gaming rooms after you or a cause you support. Everyone who plays a game in that room will have you to thank!

Champion of the Con

As with the Big Bad Con Shout out, but we'll also name one of the seven special event rooms after you or a cause you support. Everyone who plays a game in that room will have you to thank!

$50 - Wolf Rider: Everything in the Big Bad Shout Out, a special Kickstarter only shiny pin, and a 3-day pass to attend the con.

$120 - Grandma's Storybook: Everything in the Big Bad Shout Out, a special Kickstarter only shiny pin, a 3-day pass to attend the con, AND artist Amanda Webb will make a character portrait of you or the character of your choice. Scroll down for some samples of her work!

Rigney, Table for Four

Carl Rigney will run a game for you and two to three of your friends at Endgame in Oakland sometime over the next year (before October 2016, scheduled between you and Carl).

Carl will run any game for you that’s in his wheelhouse.

Free Coffee or Tea service and pastries/fruit will be provided for the table!

Bay Area Exclusive: Improv for Gamers Workshop for you and your friends!

As a gamer you may have heard that improv is closely tied to role-playing, especially in narrative-based games. It’s true, improvisational acting teaches many skills that can make your game rock: working together, keeping things interesting, and taking risks. The goal of the Improv for Gamers workshop series is to highlight those skills (and more!) as they apply to role-playing games through improv exercises and scenework.

Karen Twelves and Jennifer Warner are excited to run a customized Improv for Gamers workshop for 6-10 people.

The IfG duo will coordinate the time and date with the backers, plan a customized workshop, and travel to anywhere in the Bay Area. See www.improvforgamers.com for more information.

Risks and challenges

This is the fifth year we have hosted Big Bad Con and every year I walk away from it exhausted from the work and elated from the success.

Obstacles we've encountered in the past include the room block filling up, unexpected charges from the hotel, lack of food options, and last minute GM cancellations.

While each of these has been a challenge, we've always pulled through by expanding our room blocks, tough hotel negotiations, bringing food trucks on-sight, and calling on an array of excellent GMs to run games in a pinch!

I'm confident we can tackle any obstacles that come our way in 2015. We want to deliver the best RPG convention experience with you and for you!
