PICKLE PICKLE PEPPER is a casual push-your-luck micro-game...which is a whole bunch of industry jargon that translates to, "This simple game turns a small number of components into a ridiculous amount of fun!" Designed to be playable by almost anyone in a very short period of time (5 to 15 minutes, on average), PICKLE PICKLE PEPPER is the perfect filler game, the perfect family game, and the perfect warm-up, cool-down, and/or in-between game for those marathon gaming days! It's also portable and fits in your pocket, so you can play it virtually anywhere.
Put plainly, PICKLE PICKLE PEPPER is the perfect pastime for people with a passion for point-based pick-up play!
(In this game, alliteration is part of the fun, so get used to it.)
The basics are simple. Players start their turn by shuffling the whole deck, then pledging how many cards they intend to draw; that's your Pickle Pledge. If you're able to draw a number of pickles equal to your pledge amount without drawing a pepper, you can choose to stop and bank your Pickle Points. However, if you're feeling bold, you can push your luck (which we call a Pickle Push). While you're pushing, pickle cards are worth twice as many points, but if you draw a pepper card, you not only score zero points this turn, you lose some of the points you've already banked! Once your turn is over, pass the deck to the next player and repeat. The first player to bank a total of 20 Pickle Points wins the game!
Here's an example of how a turn might look. (We've also got some deeper explanation in the FAQ down at the bottom of the page.)
Though this game was designed to be super kid-friendly, there's more strategy to PICKLE PICKLE PEPPER than you might think. Pledging different amounts dramatically alters your risk/reward profile, and there are other cards in the deck that can have pretty exciting effects on gameplay. The cool thing about this game, though, is that you don't have to master, or even really understand those strategies to play, which is why PICKLE PICKLE PEPPER is so well-suited to family play! Players of different skill levels, using entirely different strategies, can play head-to-head at the same table and have the same fast and fun gameplay experience.
Another selling point for Pickle Pickle Pepper--especially if you have kids in your life--is that it's a fun, fast-paced activity that lets them practice basic math skills while getting them to unplug from their electronic devices and interact socially with real live human opponents! Games are great tools for social development and honing math and logic skills, and Pickle Pickle Pepper is particularly well-suited to that kind of skill-building.
"...I am a huge fan of the artwork. I love the style and the fact I can incorporate this into any game night because it is easy to teach, play, and family oriented. As it doesn’t require anything more than the deck of cards and a way to keep score, I can see playing this with small children as well as adults." --KristaG at The Geek Girl Project
"I want to play this game forever!" --Cason, age 7
(More to come during the campaign...)
If you backed our previous game, Vampsylvania, you'll find that we have slightly different plans this time. Vampsylvania was a small press, independent release; we never intended to go into large scale distribution on the first edition of the game. That campaign went great; we more than reached our goal of funding the best small press game we could make. We did exactly what we set out to do! (And we've already started delivering rewards, months ahead of schedule!)
But this time, we have a different goal. We want to seek mainstream distribution and get PICKLE PICKLE PEPPER into stores everywhere. Not only are we funding an initial print run via this campaign, we're funding a full-blown product launch!
Our operation is incredibly lean: Since creator/designer C. Michael Hall writes and draws everything himself, our overhead is considerably lower than that of many game publishers, so even with a low funding goal, we're able to do more with less money. Our funding goal includes production costs of a print run large enough to fulfill backer rewards and retailer orders, and pay our Kickstarter fees. It doesn't get much simpler than that!
Before we discuss the reward levels, let's talk about the Kickstarter exclusive we've created for this campaign, shall we? All backers who pledge at the $12.00 level or higher will receive an exclusive bonus card created for this campaign: dubbed the Pickle Pirate (as revealed in our latest update), this dashing rogue introduces a unique mechanic to the game and will be available only during this campaign! Also, every backer at the Pickle Partner ($12) level and above gets a free sticker featuring one of our adorable cartoon pickles!
Pledge $1 or more : PICKLE PAL!
Hey, we'll take all the help we can get! Backers at this level will get an official "thank you" on our website. (Be sure you message us with your name exactly as you want it to appear on the site.) Estimated delivery: Nov 2016
Pledge $3 or more: PICKLE PRINTER! The Print-N-Play option
This reward level gets you access to the PDF version of the game...just print it out and play! Backers at this level also get the official "thank you" on our website. (Be sure you message us with your name exactly as you want it to appear on the site.) Estimated delivery: Nov 2016
Pledge $12 or more: PICKLE PARTNER!
This reward level gets you one physical copy of the game and an official "thank you" on our website. (Be sure you message us with your name exactly as you want it to appear on the site.) You'll also get the exclusive Pickle Pirate card and a free sticker! Estimated delivery: Nov 2016
Pledge $22 or more: PICKLE PICKER!
During playtesting we discovered that the game plays even faster if you've got multiple decks--one can be shuffled while the other is being played with--so we're offering two copies of the game at a discount price! This reward level gets you two physical copies of the game and an official "thank you" on our website. (Be sure you message us with your name exactly as you want it to appear on the site.) You'll also get two copies of the exclusive Pickle Pirate card and a free sticker! Estimated delivery: Nov 2016
Pledge $33 or more: PICKLE POTENTATE! The Fancy-Dancy Deluxe Set
This set is something pretty special! This reward level gets you three physical copies of the game, giving you the fastest play experience at a discount price, and an official "thank you" on our website. (Be sure you message us with your name exactly as you want it to appear on the site.) You'll also get three copies of the exclusive Pickle Pirate card and a free sticker, and it all comes in a green velveteen bag with a tag marking it as a limited edition! Estimated delivery: Nov 2016
Pledge $100 or more: PICKLE PRINCE/PRINCESS!
Want to see yourself turned into a playable card? This reward level gets you a physical copy of the game, an official "thank you" on our website, the exclusive Pickle Pirate card, a free sticker, and a card featuring your likeness as the powerful Pickle Prince or Princess! Estimated delivery: Nov 2016
Because this is a micro-game, we want it to stay small and manageable, so we're not going to overload this campaign with stretch goals. The only game components are the cards, so there's not a lot of room for expansion. We do have two stretch goals, though: If we hit the $3500 funding level, we can upgrade the cards from smooth finish 300gsm to a much nicer 310gsm linen finish! And if we hit the $6000 mark, we'll upgrade to plastic cards!
It's possible we'll add more stretch goals during the campaign. We're still investigating some intriguing add-ons. If they pan out, we'll be sure to let you know!
Originally, we weren't going to offer international shipping for this campaign, but due to popular demand, we've added a global shipping option. It's a flat rate of $20US to ship anywhere outside the United States; we understand that's a tough rate, but we have no control over shipping rates (obviously). We hate having to charge this much, because it makes the shipping more than the cost of the actual game, but if we want to offer this option at a rate that's as fair as possible to as many backers as possible (while keeping the logistics manageable for our two-person shipping operation), that's how it has to be.
If the cost of international shipping is too rich for your blood (and we totally understand), there are a couple other options. One, there's our Print-N-Play reward level, which is dirt cheap and involves no shipping at all! And two, we're going to seek international distribution after the campaign, so you could always wait to purchase the game at retail later down the line.

Risks and challenges
The nice thing about PICKLE PICKLE PEPPER (apart from its general awesomeness, that is) is that it's already complete. Done. Finished. Ready to roll. Because we generated all the art and design in-house and didn't have to finance an art and design team, there's no more art or design needed. The visual aspects of game publishing are among the most expensive, but for us, that's not an issue. No risk here! Literally all we're funding with this campaign is printing and delivery costs.
This is an easy-to-produce micro-game with minimal components, so we're not faced with any unusual manufacturing challenges. Though every game runs the risk of complications during the manufacturing phase, we're as prepared for that as can be, having built lots of "cushion" into our production/release timetable. If we meet our stretch goals and are able to add some components, there will be a few more logistical challenges, but nothing we haven't accounted for.
Really, our biggest challenge is going to be getting enough pledges to hit our goal. Pickle Pickle Pepper has a low unit cost, which makes it harder to hit the higher numbers that lead to early funding success, but we've created some irresistibly cool package deals that we think will make backers want to pledge more than the minimum reward.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
