About this project

Hey all you Geocachers!

Four years ago The Travel Bugs released their first album of Geocaching music "Found It!".  Since then, the songs from this collection have inspired caches around the world, spawned a music video and gained fans from 6 continents (I'd like to believe that someone is listening in Antarctica, but that's a reach).

It's time for some more Geocaching music don't you think?

This Kickstarter campaign is intended to fund another CD.  The goal represents the time and materials necessary to write, record, mix, master, manufacture and deliver a professionally produced album of at least 10 songs about the activity that we all love ...Geocaching!

Mr. Mug L. Guy of the "To Whom It May Concern" music video would love to see this project fail.  But he's underestimated the resourcefulness of Geocachers.

In the true spirit of Kickstarter, this album can only happen if the Geocaching community rallies behind it.  If the goal is reached, the project is off the ground, and the music will be delivered in time for next summer.

What kind of CD are we talking about anyway?  Well, you can reference the first Travel Bugs CD "Found It!" to get an idea.  The CD will have quality sound and professional packaging.  The songs will likely range across a variety of genres to keep it fun.  Expect some Celtic, reggae, country, rock and more.

Where is the project at right now?  A few of the songs are written and one, "The Worst Cacher in the World" is in the process of being recorded.  A special cache has also been "pimped" for the CD cover.

What makes it different than the first CD?  This one will be much more driven by the fans.  Since the Kickstarter model determines who's funding the CD before it's complete, you can come along for the ride.  As songs are in progress, the backers can express opinions and guide the CD.  The plan is to put some things to a vote, and to incorporate ideas that come out of the Geocaching community  Backers will also get to hear the progress along the way.

I think it'll be a cool journey if it gets funded and hope you decide to join in.  Since the campaign only has 30 days to get funded, I would be extremely appreciative if you share this with other cachers via email, social media, forums,  blogs and any other way that might help get the word out.  That is the trick in the end ...just letting everyone who might be interested know about the project.

Thanks a million and happy geocaching!

Risks and challenges

So other than an actual alien zombie bug invasion, the biggest challenge to completing another album of Geocaching music is the massive time and effort involved in writing, recording, manufacturing and fulfilling the project.

This is because I'm not interested in turning on a portable recorder, strumming a few chords and singing "I'm a cacher, I'm a cacher". This will be a professional quality CD using whatever talents, equipment and resources I have. If you heard the first CD "Found It!", you'll know the direction this is headed.

To address this challenge, I've factored the time and effort in to the goal. In fact I expect this one to be a notch up since I'm actually seeking funding ahead of time. This is not my first CD, so I know what's needed to accomplish the task and have pulled it off before. If the funding goal is reached, it can be done. If not, it can't. Simple.

I've also gotten a head start as one of the songs is written and in process. I'm on it.

The other challenge that I faced on the first CD was having to guess what music geocachers really wanted to hear. I tried the shotgun approach. Now I've gotten feedback from the Geocaching community and have a better idea of what really strikes a chord and what doesn't. A metal song about spoiler photos was a miscalculation. Now I know.

Also Kickstarter will allow me to bring you guys along on the journey and get feedback. I can just ask along the way, "I am headed off in the weeds or am I near the coordinates?". You can help guide me to produce the music you want. This one is and will be much more fan-driven.

The final challenge I have is getting the word out. I have a promotion plan and will basically eat, breath and live Kickstarter for a month. If I don't reach you, it won't be from a lack of trying.

Having said that, I could really use your help. Please tell any cachers you know about this project. The more people who know about this, the more it'll get a fair shake.

So what do you say? Are you in?

Pimp My Cache! - Want a pimped out cache? Well, for $350 or more, in addition to signed copies of both "Pimp Your Cache" and "Found It!", you'll receive a cache that is pimped out similarly to the one on the front cover. It won't look exactly like that one, but it'll be the same style ...flashy and with lots of jewels, fur and bling. You can even have your Geocaching handle on the side if you want. Please note that these caches would be more like art pieces and wouldn't stand up well to actually being placed it the wild. Rough handling would result in damage.
