About this project
This project started as a hand-made board book for my daughter and a couple of her friends. I love typography and wanted to share that experience with her. I included many of my favorite sans-serif typefaces because is was so much fun to read the book aloud with her and have her say "Futura." Of course, it was actually babble that sounded very close to "Futura."
I had so much fun making the board book version, I've since made an electronic animated version, an HTML5 version, posters, the above video and am currently working on a letterpress broadside. You can see the two finished posters below. If you want to know more about my design process and the journey to this point, check out my blog about it (http://areyoumytypeface.blogspot.com).
I am raising funds to cover the cost of a small print run of 1000 to 2000 copies. The other major cost the funds will cover is shipping, both packaging and postage. I will also use the Kickstarter funds for font licenses, ISBN numbers, time on the letterpress and printing the posters.
So far, I've done all of the design work, testing and fabrication on my own, but at this scale that's impossible. So I am working with some great companies to get this project completed. I'm using a printer from Washington that has a lot of experience doing board books. For the posters, there is a great local print shop here called Pixxlz in Boston that has done really excellent work for me before. For the letterpress piece, I'm working the Boston Paper Collective who do amazing things and I just sort of feel lucky I live in the same town as them.
In the end, this project is basically about sharing my family's love of typography in a way other families can use. That's why I've focused on board books and posters that are fun, bright and full of classic fonts. I've put the project on Kickstarter to reach out and see if this was an experience people would enjoy. I hope that you can feel the same excitement I did when a small child you care about says "Helvetica" for the first time.
Stretch Goal : $20,000
After reaching the 100% mark, I started thinking about how I could make the project even better. If we reach this stretch goal, I will hire an experienced app designer I know and trust to help me bring "Are You My Typeface?" to the iPhone and iPad! The app will feature extra typefaces you can switch into the story as well as read-along audio and record-your-own audio. I'm really excited about the possibility of creating a more interactive experience for you and your loved ones by adding audio and other features. If we reach this goal, I will also send an "Are You My Typeface?" sticker to every backer at no additional cost. I hope you think that this is a neat idea too and thanks for your support.
Risks and challenges
The main risks and challenges stem from the printing process and the scalability. Board books are a specialty print job and there are no local print shops I can use to manufacture this book. Therefore, the printing process will have a long lead time (I've been told approximately 3 months), especially for board books. Possible risks included having the books damaged during freight shipping. There could also be unforeseen problems getting the books to me, since I haven't ordered this quantity of board books before. I've mitigated this problem by using a printing company (http://www.crownmediacorp.com/) who have been in business for over 25 years and have produced many children's books including board books. I was really impressed by the samples they sent me as I did not know you could get that kind of quality in a board book.
The other risk is in the scalability of the shipping and logistics. If I exceed the number of orders I need to achieve my current goal, I will be hard pressed to fulfill all of the orders in a timely manner with my current team. To deal with this risk, I've received quotes from several order fulfillment companies such as Shipwire and will be able to switch to their services if the need arises.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
There is international shipping! There are two different reward levels for international shipping. If you live in Canada, pick the $22 level and you will receive a book in any of the provinces or territories of Canada. If you live anywhere not the US or Canada, pick the $27 level.
No, it's not. You can choose to customize your book with Comic Sans but there is an additional fee of $500 for pain and suffering.
The posters are Tabloid Size, which is 11" x 17". They are in landscape orientation.
For shipping within the US:
If you would like two copies of the book without any other rewards, choose the $15 reward level, but donate $30 and send me a message. I will make a note that you wanted more copies. Likewise, if you want three copies, choose the $15 reward level and donate three times that amount ($45), etc.
For shipping to Canada:
Choose the $22 reward level and donate $44 for two books, or $66 for three books, etc.
For shipping to other destinations:
Choose the $27 reward level and donate $54 for two books, or $81 for three books, etc.
Don't forget to send me a note indicating you wanted multiple copies, and thanks for your support!
