Food Matters! What we eat matters! What you eat matters!

What force has pushed the United States into a junk food consuming nation? Why has childhood obesity tripled in the past 30 years? Is it the lack of healthy food within low income neighborhoods? Increasing huge agri-business pushing small farms into bankruptcy, burgeoning bottom lines of school districts?

What we eat and how we eat food matters – now more than ever! According to the New England Journal of Medicine, with 17% of children diagnosed with obesity and over 35.8% of the U.S. population diagnosed with diabetes, we as a nation will spend over $147 billion annually on obesity and food related illnesses.

This has become a national epidemic and it is tipping scales in the wrong direction. We are the youth of today, and we stand for the generations of tomorrow. It is time for education to meet implementation in order to affect change.

How do we return to a diet that is palatable for everyone before we end up a nation on insulin?

It begins with what kids are served at their kitchen tables at home, but it is fostered by what they learn to eat everyday in the school lunch rooms from kindergarten on up. If you can change the way that children think about the food they eat five days a week, the building blocks are in place for a healthier lifestyle in and out of school. This is when education matters most. This is when food matters most!

Planted as an idea in the spring of 2011, The What’s For Lunch Project is a collaboration of young filmmakers, journalists, artists, and activists with a mission to educate and implement change from the ground level, where it matters most, in the school lunch systems.

It is a movement led by today’s rising generation. A pilot documentary, websites and articles on the evolution and revolution on the way we eat both in school and out, and an explosion of other related info and resources on local sustainability.

Meet Chase!

Born in a small beach community outside of Florida’s northeast city of Jacksonville, Chase’s interests in directing and producing sparked when he was enrolled in Douglas Anderson School of the Arts with a focus in film production. While at DA, Chase had the opportunity to work and learn from a number of industry professionals as well as produce documentaries and public service projects for a non-profit, youth based, environmental production company called Team Gaia. During his time at Team Gaia, Chase worked with a number of other teen activists to produce a documentary on climate change that would later go on to be nominated for an Emmy award in 2007.

Now a rising senior enrolled in Emerson College’s BFA Film Production program, Chase has worked for a number of minor and major film and television production companies located in both Boston and New York City over the past four years. In an effort to marry his passions for social activism and documentary filmmaking, Chase has launched the What’s For Lunch Project in the spring of 2012 as an effort to bring youth filmmakers, artists, journalists, and activists together to combat an epidemic present across the United States.
