UPDATE! Please note, all my work will ship internationally with no additional charge - I added two extra tiers for international backers because I accidentally selected US only for Delay and Era. Pre-existing pledges will not be affected.
"Art, music and poetry are about what is is like to be alive. That almost goes without saying; depth of human content is what raises art to its most profound level. But that human content resides and finds expression within the language of the medium. The language artists use has to be the language of the subject: this is not the language of everyday life. The language we use in sculpture is the language of sculpture. It has to do with materials, shapes, intervals, and so on..."
-Anthony Caro, interview with Peter Fuller
My name is Gabriel. Welcome to my kickstarter. Make yourself at home.
My idea is simple. Raise funds, buy a laser cutter, use the laser cutter to make art, and then send that art to all my backers.
The art will be made from several layers of 1/8th inch mahogany plywood. Each piece is glued together, finished by hand, and will ship ready to hang without additional framing.
Each of the designs will be a limited edition. If ten people back a given tier, those pieces will be an edition of 10, and I will never produce more. The first person to back that tier will get a piece numbered 1/10. And so forth. Once the Kickstarter is over, you wont have a chance to buy these pieces ever again!
I have already finished and prototyped the designs for the basic tiers, but in the Commission and Patronage tiers I will work with every backer to develop new designs that will be unique single editions.
Enough talk, take a look at the work! Click each image for more photos.
please note, there was a mixup with the materials when I made Aeon. A few of the layers are cherry instead of mahogany. The coloring will be more consistent in the final run.
The Commission Tier
I always try and make my commission process an interesting back and forth between myself and the patron. Backing this tier not only means you get a one-of-kind work, but you will also get to engage in the creative process with me. I have a structured method I've refined through past commissions, but the process can be as open ended as you would like.
The pieces will be limited to 12" by 20" - the same size as Aeon.
The Patronage Tier
This is the leap of faith tier. If you like what you've seen, but want to know what I could do after a few months of having my own laser cutter to play with, this is the reward for you. If you want to work closely with me to make something amazing, great! If you want to leave it all in my hands, also great.
Size will be limited to twice as big as the previous tier - 40" by 12", 24" by 20" or anywhere in between.
Well...Just take a look!
Each of these pieces starts out as a vector illustration, each layer of which is individually sent to the laser cutter, just like sending a page to a printer - except the printer shoots lasers. The material is 1/8th inch plywood, and the layers get glued together before I put the varnish on. They all get signed and numbered on the back, and mounted with hanging hardware, so they are ready to display as soon as they arrive.
I have long been possessed with a desire to make my work bigger and more intricate at the same time. A modestly sized cut paper piece could take me weeks of nonstop work to execute. This project is not only the next step forward stylistically, but a means to achieve far more daring and exciting projects. I'm already dreaming about all the different materials and colors and designs that I can experiment with, once I have my own machine.
My ten thousand dollar goal will pay for a laser cutter, all the materials I will need, and shipping supplies. But it's also going to allow me to rent a proper art studio for the first time in my career. Moving my studio out of my living room is maybe the most thrilling potential side effect of this campaign.
I had a great experience with my previous Kickstarter campaign, and I believe the platform can be a powerful tool for artists. I don't have to worry about spending time making pieces I'll never sell, or artificially inflate my prices to make up for the 50% cut most art galleries typically take. There's really no way I could spend thousands of dollars on a tool for making art without Kickstarter, and that's pretty amazing.
I love having the opportunity to reach new audiences, and making work that people can feel a meaningful connection to. So thank you for taking a look at this project. Your support means the world to me.
Risks and challenges
I have worked out my projected costs, lined up bulk shipping supplies, and scouted out a studio space. Executing the work should be smooth sailing; How long it's going to take is another story. I intend to meticulously hand-finish and detail every piece myself, so please understand that my fulfillment dates are a good faith estimate of how long the project will take me at 100% funding. 200% funding probably wouldn't mean double the production time, but the project will have to be extended. All backers will receive a more accurate timeline in a post-funding project update, and anyone that wants a piece rushed for any reason, need only ask.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
