I have visited an alien world. I have met many of its inhabitants and documented their sentience. In the process, I adapted to that alien place. I learned to dive deep, hold my breath for minutes at a time and move quietly without tanks, regulators and bubbles. I taught myself to transcend my fears and see what is actually happening in front of me. I learned the language of the inhabitants of this strange and beautiful world. I have had many wonderful encounters with beautiful and powerful beings living amazing and unimaginable lives… The practice of freediving or breath-hold diving is far more than an extreme sport. It’s a deep and illuminating form of yoga which creates an altered state of being for the practitioner that leads directly towards integration with the environment.
I began to document these experiences with a camera about six years ago and have now acquired a large library of photographs depicting many of these encounters.
The title of my project, The Leaf Game, is a reference to a practice of dolphins involving a game somewhat like soccer whereby they pass a leaf between them. Often they will involve human swimmers into their games. The idea that any nonhuman would invite people to play with them in the wild is a revealing comment about the concept of sentience and the true nature of our fellow beings.
In the end, it’s as we all suspected, the truth is that we are all more alike than we are different. Sentience is a trait that applies to many more beings than just humans. It’s been a humbling and gratifying experience and I want to share it with you.
The Leaf Game, will be two versions of a beautiful fine art photography book and exhibit (details below). This is a collection of my natural and meditative photographs supported by stories, observations and experiences. It will feel good to share these relaxing and inspiring pictures with you.
The Leaf Game book will be issued as a first edition and as a collector's, special, limited edition. Approximately 80 photographs with photograph details, photograph stories and experiences will be included. The collectors special edition will be printed in an amount for this Kickstarter project only.
The Leaf Game is a wholly independent production on my end. I am doing my own fundraising, marketing, writing, editing, layout and design, and match prints. The Leaf Game is to be printed and bound in the U.S., in support of American manufacturing.
Please support this project: together, we’ll produce a book that’s innovative, honest and beautiful; that’s at a magical nexus of ocean awareness, interspecies communication and art.
Collectors Special Limited Edition: 12x12, Hardcover, Dust Jacket, Charcoal Linen Cover. Approximately 80 photographs. Acknowledgement of Kickstarter Backers, Donors and Contributing Donors. Slipcover. Printed in an amount for Kickstarter Collectors Special Edition only.

Fine Print Series
I am offering both Digital C-Prints and Giclee fine art pigment prints. A select few of my Artist's Proofs are available for sale. They are a numbered, one-of-a-kind with very limited edition "AP".
All of my prints are archival matted, signed and mounted and come in an archival bag or framed. All 8x10 and larger C-Prints and all Fine Art Prints are Limited Editions, archival matted, numbered and signed, then mounted (and in a few cases, framed) and come with a Certificate of Authenticity (COA). Some rewards offer dedications.
You can choose framed or unframed rewards. All frames are 16x20 inches or larger for both the 11x14 and 8x10 prints. The higher cost (of the frame, work and shipping) is well worth it. These are ready to hang on your wall. I offer UV protection on both Canvas (with a coating) and on archival or fine art photo papers (under UV glass gallery archival frames).
These make a fantastic gift for you or someone you love. From adults to teens to toddlers, reactions to the Leaf Game photo (and others) have been inspirational in my journey to bring these fine photographs to you.

The Prints - Quality, Mastery
I am working with a master printer who has been printing fine art for 30 years. He works with other artists in our galleries locally and worked in the San Francisco fine art printing business for over 20 years.
Proofs are being created now for my top 20 photos.
I do not drop ship from the printer (these are large printing houses and do not allow for a level of quality control or hand numbering and signing that I prefer). All my prints are signed, so each step of this process is managed by hand and reviewed for quality by at least 3 people.
Seeking Your Support
I want you to be well rewarded and involved in my project. I will keep you informed through updates to the project and backers-only updates. The rewards are staged to keep you rewarded through the entire upcoming year. Greeting cards will be delivered in February. Early Bird C-prints and one-of-a-kind artist's proofs will be delivered for Valentine's Day. All other Giclee and C-Prints will be delivered by March of 2014. The book will be published no later than November, 2014, and very likely, much earlier.
When Galleries buy photographs from Artists, they markup Artist's work by 240-280 percent and this is the price they charge you. The amounts of pledges and rewards reflected in this project are lower than gallery and higher than artist cost; this pays for "The Project".
100% of funding of this project will support this project. Additional breakdown is approximately 40% fulfills the reward with shipping and insurance (where applicable), plus 5% Kickstarter fee, plus up to 5% Amazon Fees, almost 5% Hawaii Taxes. We expect 45% of the project funding to support the project.
Your generosity is greatly appreciated. I hope you are further rewarded as these photographs offer you moments away from your busy day, guide you or a loved one to sweet dreams at night, as a conversation piece or compliment to your business or home. In addition, it is possible these photographs will increase in value over your pledge amount through limited edition sell outs, gallery presentations and Time.
About Kickstarter and Crowdfunding
Through all of us working together, this project will succeed. We need several hundred backers to make this project a reality. Any pledge amount helps and is gratefully accepted.
There are two things you can do to help my project's success. You can back my project and participate through my updates and rewards and you can share this project with your social circle.
Every pledge, every Share, every Blog, every Twitter and every email really does count and adds up to making our funding goals.
I won’t disappoint you. Thank you for making these fine art photographs possible and supporting this book and project.
PROJECT UPDATE 11-22-2013:
Thousands of hours of work is completed on this project. We are in a Pilot Stage.
I have completed my 6 years of field work.
I have reviewed 20,000 prints.
I have selected 200 of my best prints for possible use in the book.
I am reviewing Publishers for the book.
I am printing proofs on C-Prints of the top 100 photographs for the book.
I have ordered, received and paid for our first fine art proofs of prints on multiple media for multiple prints in the #1-9.
My first gallery/professional presentation portfolio is 25% complete.
I have standing invitations to bring my portfolio to galleries on The Big Island of Hawaii, when my portfolio is ready.
Upon funding of this project:
You will receive an email from me requesting additional information so I can deliver your reward(s) (where to send it to, dedication requests, etc.)
I am planning a small studio expansion (with more tables) and one new desk and workstation to handle this new ordering and fulfillment stage of the project as well as the book design & layout phase.
I will complete the book, The Leaf Game. This includes the design and layout phases, then ordering a proof, checking quality and color, making final changes (another proof if needed), placing orders.
I will plan and place all vendor orders based on pledges and your returned questionnaires.
I will place the next orders, arrival, pressing, and archival of the Fine Art Proofs of prints #1-20. I will choose my favorite media for each fine art print, sign into BAT with the printer and begin printing.
I will complete fulfillment of pledges based on your response to my questionnaire regarding your shipping information.
From the Project Manager, Susan Dreiske:
Ted's objective is to capture wildlife in a natural way, without lights and interference to the wildlife. In most cases, using only a G10 and a housing, all lighting is natural.
These are incredible, candid pictures of beautiful beings in their wild and natural world. Unpredictable, spontaneous and fleeting moments. We hope Ted's photographs will inspire and take you and others into the moment.
Please share this project within your social networks widely. We are relying upon your help to spread the word about this project to your extended social media, blog and email networks. Thank you for supporting this project!
As this project is in its Pilot stage, risks are minimal. At this time, the biggest risk is the funding of this project.
I have an amazing team of professionals working on this project including an award winning project manager to keep everything and everyone on track and a professional fine art printer and artist in his own right. Lucky me!
Other than acts of God, I am confident in this schedule and delivery of Rewards as promised.
I will be checking schedule against fulfillment weekly. Should we fall behind, I will schedule fulfillment parties and hire additional help if necessary.
I will be packaging everything as carefully as possible and shipping with insurance. Any damages in shipment must be reported to me upon receipt for insurance claim purposes.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Kickstarter is a crowdfunding platform. It is free to me as a project Creator to signup. Kickstarter allows Creators to put together a project, offer pledging with Rewards, offers a platform that is integrated with Amazon Payments, and if a project is fully funded, charges the "Backers". Once funded with all pledges collected, Kickstarter charges a project a fee of about 5% for using the platform and Amazon charges a fee of up to 5% for processing payments. Both companies must approve a Creator's Identity prior to launching the project. It's a great formula, and has allowed many projects a chance they would not have otherwise. There is no risk to you to fund a Kickstarter project.
Pledges are secure and charged through Amazon payments. They take VISA, MASTERCARD, AMERICAN EXPRESS, DISCOVER AND OTHER CARDS. Amazon allows "guest" checkout.
