We have already created a playable prototype of Timothy vs the Aliens. It’s a 5-minute demo where you can control Timothy in his neighbourhood and fight against some aliens. This demo is just a draft of the gameplay and art style of the game. The quality of the final game will be much better: graphics, animations, control of the character, enemy IA, details, level design, etc.
IMPORTANT: This prototype can only be played with GAMEPAD. The PC version of the final game will also be playable with mouse and keyboard. We’re sorry for the inconvenience.
ALSO IMPORTANT: This ISN’T the First Contact Demo that will be included in some of the rewards. The First Contact Demo will include the first hour of the final game.
Timothy vs the Aliens is an adventure and platform video game where you will play the role of a gangster named Timothy, who lives in a black & white period and fights against the full-colored aliens that have invaded his city. The aliens have come to Earth looking for any living thing to eat and they are terrorizing the city. This situation could endanger Timothy’s reputation and position — if the aliens gain control of the city, he will lose everything he has achieved after many years of hard work. So he decides to take things into his own hands and defend his title of King of the City. It will eventually turn out he is the only one who can defeat the aliens.
Everything will take place in Little Fish City, which will be divided in to open-world areas that will be full of characters, stories and adventures.
We want to create a platform game where, in addition to platforms and puzzles, there will be a lot of action. We want to combine these three elements to achieve a very dynamic gameplay, so the game will have many moments of action and many other moments where you will enjoy the puzzles and you will have to concentrate on the obstacles of the scene.
When we started to design this game, the first reference that came to our minds was the platform video game Panic Restaurant. What we wanted to bring back from that game was the emotions we felt when we played it and use them in a 3D game with the graphics and features today.
The humour is also very important in this game. We are not trying to create a hilarious game, but we want to add subtle jokes and surprising comic situations tending towards black humour.
It all started when Timothy was a child living in a fishing village named Little Fish. One day, he was abducted by a group of aliens that were part of an organization that tried to save planets. After telling him that an invasion would come to Earth in the future to devour everything, they gave him the only tool that could save the planet. So that the tool would go unnoticed, these aliens had converted it into an ordinary human object: a deck of cards. Timothy was thrown back to Earth, and he just continued with his pranks.
Some years after, Timothy has become a very influential gangster and, thanks to his fruitful business, his small village is now a large city where gangs and corruption are the norm. But what happened to the tool that would save the world?
You will control Timothy, a gangster with the ability to run, sprint, jump and fire his machine gun (and other weapons) at the aliens and at other objects, which can be done focusing a target to shoot at. These controls also allow Timothy to drag objects, collect items and interact with other characters and with the environment.
The game takes place in Timothy’s city, which is divided into different open-world areas that can be accessed from one to another. The areas can be freely explored and there will be many items, secrets and secondary missions that can be completed whenever you want. But there will be zones that will be exclusive to the main missions (quests) of the game.
All the areas of the game are completely 3D. The scenes include platforms, jumps, dangerous objects to dodge, interactive objects, puzzle sequences, collectable items, and, obviously, enemy aliens.
Timothy’s energy will be represented by two bars: health points and sprint points. He will lose health points if he is hurt by the aliens or by dangerous objects, falls from a high height or falls into the water or into holes. If the health points are exhausted, you will go back to the last checkpoint. You will find items to reload the health bar. The sprint points are used when Timothy runs faster, and are automatically recovered when he is running normally or standing.
There will be different types of aliens and you will find many action sequences where you will fight against them, either against individual aliens or against hordes. There will also be a lot of alien bosses and you will need the power of the deck of cards to defeat them and stop the invasion.
The game includes many puzzle sequences where you will have to find the key to open a door, help another character, interact with objects to access blocked or hidden places, avoid being seen, and more. To accomplish these tasks, Timothy will have the ability to pick up and store a number of items in order to use them later on, as well as discarding them if he needs to pick up another item that must be used before. This will add a little of strategy if there are several items that must be used in a specific order.
The game will also include special missions with a different gameplay, which will appear as bonus missions and after some important events. The bonus missions will be unlocked by performing some actions within the areas of the game and will be like an arena, where consecutive hordes of aliens will appear. The other type of missions will involve driving some type of vehicle and dodging obstacles.
Timothy will always be equipped with his machine gun, which has infinite ammunition. But as you advance in the game, Timothy will obtain other weapons. Some of them will be powerful human weapons like a flamethrower, a grenade launcher, bigger machine guns, etc. And others will be weird alien weapons like a costume gun, a slime gun, a freeze cannon, etc., which are actually quite effective with the aliens. Once these weapons are unlocked, they can be used at any time, but they have limited ammunition and Timothy will change back to his machine gun when they stop shooting. The ammunition can be bought by calling the Gunrunner and paying him with the money collected in the game.
As you go through every area, you will find money scattered all around and hidden in some objects, which you will have to break by shooting at them. The collected money will be added to Timothy's account and can be used to buy items from the Gunrunner: ammunition, improvements to increase Timothy's health points and sprint points, upgrades for the unlocked weapons, etc
You can contact the Gunrunner by phone-calling him from the menu of the game or from the phone boxes you will find in the areas. After calling him, you will see images of his store, which is hidden underground, and you will be able to select and buy the items that you wish and pay him with the money collected in the game. He will ship the goods immediately.
The main items Timothy will have to collect are the cards of the alien deck. However, they will not be just hidden at some points of every area; there will be specific missions (quests) to recover every card or bundle of cards.
In every area, you will find a number of hot dogs. These were scattered everywhere by the owner of a hot dog cart while he ran away from the aliens, and he is willing to reward you for finding them by giving you keys to access bonus missions and secret places.
There will also be a map in every area. If you give these maps to the Gunrunner and bribe him with some money, he will mark the position of the secrets of the area: hot dogs, keys and other items.
The environments and items of the game are inspired by the big American cities in the 1920s and 1930s. However, we do not intend to exactly depict that period, rather we want the game to give the feeling of the gangster movies of that time, that is why we decided to make everything black & white. The characters are also inspired by the trends and concepts of that period, including how Martians would look like. But the aliens are not in black & white because they don’t actually belong to the gangster world, they come from another planet and they would probably have developed “full color” technology. This will give rise to some missions where Timothy is within the alien spaceships and everything is in color, except him.
The original soundtrack of Timothy vs the Aliens will be created by composer Matt Collins. The soundtrack will have a jazzy touch that will teletransport you to the gangster era. Here you can listen to the track Matt has created for this campaign.
Track: This is My Little Friend, Say Hello!
Characters from Earth
In the game there will be other characters that will give rise to conflicts and additional missions. These are some of the characters we have already designed, but there will be many more:
The Hot Dog Guy: He is the owner of a hot dog cart, but he has lost all his hot dogs while he was escaping from the aliens. You will find him at some points of the game, where you can give him the hot dogs you managed to collect.
The Grandfather: Another gangster that is always competing with Timothy to gain control of the city, but he never plays fair. He likes wandering incognito and you will find him at some points dressed as a normal old man and acting strangely friendly.
The Gunrunner: He provides Timothy with ammunition and other items that the gangster uses for his operations. He hides under his hat and his Mackintosh coat, but he is always available by phone call.
The Old Lady: She is a very energetic lady that is always looking for her cat and running all around.
The Cat: A cat obsessed with fish bones in such a way that he is always causing trouble to his owner.
The Train Driver: He will firstly appear in a train out of control and you will have to help him to avoid a disaster.
The Photographer: He/She is the one that indicates the checkpoints. You will never see his/her face, as it is covered by the cloth of the view camera.
The Policeman: He has been trying to catch Timothy red-handed for a long time but he always arrives when nothing is happening. You will see him hidden and taking notes at some points.
The aliens have come to Earth looking for food and other resources. There are different races: some of them are more strategist and others just eat whatever walking thing that passes by. These are the alien characters we have already designed, but there will be more:
The Smart Boss: It is the leader of the invasion mission. It is very clever, but quite puny, that is why it is always accompanied by the strong boss, who is like its bodyguard.
The Strong Boss: It is a big and tough alien that never thinks too much. It always listens to the smart boss and supports its decisions.
The Activist: As a member of the organization of “planet savers”, it is against the invasion and defends other ways to obtain food that do not involve devastating planets.
Green Gobblers: They are just very hungry, and they follow and gobble down any living thing.
Orange Leechs: They hide everywhere and stick to anybody that passes by.
The Spitting Aliens: They attack you from the distance by spitting a very corrosive liquid.
The Spaceship Drivers: These aliens are within tiny flying saucers and they can attack you from the distance and abduct you.
The game will be divided into a number of areas where you will find a lot of missions. The objective of many of these missions will be to find the cards of the alien deck in order to stop the invasion. These missions will tell you more about Timothy and his story. These are some examples of missions, but the game will include a lot more:
The Grandfather’s building: Timothy infiltrates within the building of his rival. He will have to deal with the strong security system, which includes many traps and surveillance, and face the Grandfather in person.
Alien Spaceship: You will get in an alien spaceship, where everything is in colour except Timothy and there are many kinds of weird technology.
Train out of control: Timothy goes through the inside and the outside of a train to help the train driver, who has been attacked by the aliens.
Beneath the city: Timothy will have to go down to the city sewer and face other creatures apart from aliens.
Inside the Activist: The Activist was so hungry that, in a fit of madness, it swallows a human. But when it realizes what it has done, it goes crazy and mutates into a giant monster. Timothy gets inside the giant alien in order to save the human and try to solve the situation.
Under the sea: Timothy had lost a card to a guy that ended up at the bottom of the sea. Timothy will put a diving suit on and go underwater to recover his card.
Zeppelin: You get on a zeppelin that will help you approach the alien mothership, but that will involve walking over the outside of the aircraft.
Mothership: You manage to get into the leading spacecraft and you will have to face many aliens and find the bosses.
Race: You will drive a car in a race against other gangsters, trying to dodge other vehicles and the shots from the weapons of the other gangsters.
Save the Old Lady and the Cat: The Old Lady was trying to make her cat go down from a tree, but a group of aliens appeared, so she also climbed up to the top of the tree. Timothy will fight against hordes of aliens to clear the area.
We will be thrilled to achieve our initial goal. It will allow us to create the game we’ve always wished to make! And we want Timothy vs the Aliens to represent a whole world full of characters, stories and happenings. In short, we will work non-stop to create a game that you will love playing. In addition, we’ve got many ideas on how to make Timothy vs the Aliens a bigger game. We will use every bit extra to improve the game in every aspect so that it will be even better.
If we achieve our €430,000 stretch goal, we will include an online multiplayer mode for 8 to 16 players. The gameplay of this game mode will be the following:
Every player will belong to one of the two teams: the terrestrial team or the alien team. The terrestrial team will have to defend the area, which could be an open space or a building, and the alien team will have to invade the area. One of the teams will win if they achieve the goal before the others or if they obtain more points in a given time.
You will be able to control any of the characters of the game, and every character will have special abilities. Here are some examples:
- Timothy can carry several weapons and change from one to another (the other characters can carry only a weapon and they have to throw it to use another one).
- The Gunrunner can use his Mackintosh coat as an invisibility suit (the effect will look like in Metal Gear Solid 4).
- The Old Lady can run very fast.
- The Hot Dog Guy can create balloons that look like him to confuse the other players.
- The Green Gobblers can hide by flattening themselves against the ground.
If we achieve our €530,000 stretch goal (and the €630,000 stretch goal for the second expansion), we will create the following expansions to the game:
- Timothy vs. the Killer Robots: A doctor that had been working for Timothy for a long time was one day fired in a very rude way, so he decides to wait for the perfect day to take revenge. When the aliens touched down, the doctor managed to obtain some material from the alien spaceships and, after analyzing it, he created an army of killer robots. Now the doctor is going to use this army against Timothy and his city, and you will have to fight against them to save the city and Timothy's life.
- Timothy vs. the Mutant Creatures: Timothy had lost one of the cards of the deck in the city sewer, so he went there to recover it. However, the card had been abandoned for a very long time in the unsanitary conditions of the sewer, so it gave off a decomposition substance that made some creatures mutate into aggressive monsters. Now these creatures are coming out from the sewer and you will have to save the city one more time.
Features for VR
If we achieve our €430,000 stretch goal, we will include features for Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR. We will keep the main gameplay, but now you will see the scene as if it were a scale model. You will be able to move the camera with the movement of your head in order to see a big area around the main character. This will allow you to see the rooms surrounding the character to check if there are enemies or to find secrets that are hidden to the normal camera.
The game is going to be developed for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
We’ve created a campaign on Greenlight to get support to publish it on Steam. Go to http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=650546831 and give us a thumbs up on Greenlight.
We’re also considering a version for Wii U or the next Nintendo console.
The prototype of Timothy vs the Aliens has been created using ShiVa Engine. We have a very wide experience working with it, as we have used it for almost all our previous projects. It also allow us to export to all our desired platforms.
* Estimated conversions to USD are included.
*Final designs may vary slightly.
Wild Sphere is an independent game developer. Our team is made up of two dedicated professionals that love making video games: Michael D. and Irene Guardiola. Since Wild Sphere was founded in 2014, we have developed three games for PC and iOS, but we are not new in the field. We have been working on video games and interactive software since 2006 and we have worked on 11 published video games, including the acclaimed Naught series, and on many other professional projects. And what’s more important is that we’ve worked together for many years and we complement each other perfectly, allowing us to create a nice and productive work environment.
Others professionals have collaborated on the prototype of Timothy vs the Aliens with ideas, designs, models and more. They are extraordinarily talented and we’d love them to be part of the development team if we achieve our initial funding goal.
Risks and challenges
Making a video game is a complex process and a lot of things can go wrong. From our experience, we’ve learnt that a delay in a single task can compromise the whole schedule of the project and that, most of the times, things are more complicated than they seemed.
After many projects, we’ve also learnt how to overcome these difficulties. We’ve learnt to anticipate problems so that they have very little impact on the whole process and we’ve learnt to work well under time pressure to successfully complete a project. In addition, we are insufferably perfectionist, so we won’t stop until we make a game that will exceed your expectations.
We love making video games and we dream of developing Timothy vs the Aliens.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
