Wow!!!! We made it with 10 hours to spare. Thank you so much for helping me reach my goal. If you want to join us and get a pre-release copy of the CD, you have till midnight to choose from any of the rewards on the right. We're at the goal but any extra funds will go toward promoting the new record so any additional help is still much appreciated!
Hello there! With just a few days left in the campaign I want to thank you for stopping by and checking out my project. If you'd like to see a longer video with more live footage and descriptions of the music for my 4th album, please Click here to see full length video on YouTube
Also, some of the musicians I've played with have kindly offered to share their support in words for my music and this new CD and I'd like to share that with you:
“Melissa Stylianou has it all – a gorgeous instrument, superb musicianship and great taste.” Fred Hersch, GRAMMY-nominated jazz pianist
"I performed with Melissa Stylianou at St. Peter's Church in NYC. She is truly a first-rate musician with a versatile instrument and wide-ranging stylistic scope. I look forward to making music with Melissa in the future!" Geoffrey Keezer, GRAMMY-nominated jazz pianist
"Melissa Stylianou is a wonderful singer! There’s warmth in every note she sings, whether it’s the melody and lyrics of a song or the occasional improvisation she does with great taste.
It’s a great joy to listen to her and to perform with her. Can’t wait to hear the CD." Gene Bertoncini, guitarist
"One of the most captivating and creative singer/songwriters on the scene today" Mark Morganelli, Executive Director, Jazz Forum Arts
So here's the plan:
I'm going to make a new album this winter - my fourth independent recording and my first since moving to New York from Toronto in 2005. I've been playing every month at 55 Bar in NYC with my band and in the last 6 months, it has become clear that it is time to document this music. The CD will feature my trio: Pete McCann on guitar, Gary Wang on bass and Rodney Green on drums, as well as some other musical guests (like my husband Jamie Reynolds on piano) and I’ve enlisted the talents of arranger/composer/producer Oded Lev-Ari to help guide us in the studio and to co-produce with me.
The tunes we’ll record are drawn from the worlds of jazz, pop, folk, and original material and include songs by: Johnny Cash, Joanna Newsom, Paul Simon, Jerome Kern and yours truly. I’m especially excited about the originals, which include one I co-wrote with Jamie Reynolds ("Silent Movie") and two lyrics for instrumental pieces by Edgar Meyer ("First Impressions") and Vince Mendoza ("Angelicus", now titled "Hearing Your Voice"). You’ll hear some of these songs in the video.
I am going to make a record that sounds amazing without being overly “produced”. We’re going to go into the studio and do it all in a day or two, focusing on maintaining the spontaneity we have in our live shows, and while we're going to use a top-notch studio and get the best sound we can, we'll still be able to do it with a modest budget, thanks to the generosity of everyone involved.
All I need now is some help from my friends and supporters to make this a reality and that's where you come in.
I'm an independent artist. I've produced 3 very well received albums over the past 11 years and I love being able to work my butt off to bring my artistic vision to fruition and have it sound exactly the way I want it to.
In the past, I've pre-sold copies of my albums to my fans to help fill in gaps in funding (and thank you if you're one of those people!), and if you help me out with this campaign you will indeed be getting a copy of the album ahead of anyone else, but you also stand to receive much, much more! Kickstarter allows me raise funds for this project from folks like you who really want to hear the music I’ll be making but might also be interested in some more unique and exclusive perks. A beautifully designed, eco-friendly packaged, personally signed CD can be yours but there are lots of other great rewards to choose from in the list to the right, so check it out and take your pick – from bonus mp3’s to limited edition t-shirts, to homemade cookies, to a house concert, to being right there in the studio with us!
Here’s the serious talk:
I need to raise $13500 to make this record. I’ve got some super-talented and very generous folks working on this with me, but even so, it will take all that money to record, mix, master, manufacture and promote the album that I want to make. This is an all-or-nothing endeavor and you won’t be charged for your donation until we reach our goal on November 6, 2010. And if we don’t reach the goal, well, suffice it to say I won’t be making you chocolate chip cookies and more importantly, I won’t be able to make a record I feel strongly will be my best yet.
So, if you like what you hear in the video and on my websites, and you’d like to be involved in helping bring this music to the world, this is your chance. I really appreciate your time and energy and I can’t wait to get started.
Thank you, Melissa Stylianou
