Who are we:
To celebrate the life of the late Nelson Mandela a group of South African designers and colleagues set out to collect 95 exceptional posters from around the world, honouring Madiba’s lifelong contribution to humanity. This was done in 2013, the year our beloved Madiba would have had his 95th birthday.
This group of freelancers and volunteers became known as the Mandela Poster Project Collective (MPPC).
This year sees the celebration of what would have been Nelson Mandela’s 100th birthday and the MPPC is planning to use the posters in a special project.
What are we planning to make:
We are planning to create an A5 journal for the young patients in the Nelson Mandela’s Children’s Hospital. The journal will include all 95 posters, as well as equal blank space. I have an idea: Be like Madiba will be their book to use in any way they like.
Where did the project come from:
Back in 2013 the extraordinary happened: In 60 days more than 700 posters were submitted by designers from about 70 countries. The collection was curated and 95 posters (representing 95 years of Madiba’s life) have been shown in roving exhibitions around the world since then.
The master set of posters was sold for $100 000 and the money was donated to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital - a lifelong dream of our revered former president.
What is our plan/schedule:
Our plan is to and print 1 000 copies of the journal and donate them to the young patients of the Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital. Supporters of our kickstarter will receive access to large format printable composite posters of the Mandela 95 Collection, as one part of various permutations of gifts.
We have completed the design of the journal. With your support, we will be able to print the 1000 copies in September.
Our budget is $10 000.
Why do we care:
The MPPC cares about this project because we care about the legacy left by Nelson Mandela. The message we want to send to the young patients in the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital says it all: “We hope that you will use this book to create ideas – you can draw, you can write, you can plan your life. You can remember Madiba as you go along. Know that he had a difficult life but that he always believed in what was the right thing to do. He was a kind man, he believed in himself and other people, he dreamt big dreams for South Africa, and he worked hard to achieve these dreams. So, as you use this book and look at the 95 beautiful posters, know that you are also a great human being: Be like Madiba.”
Risks and challenges
We have completed the design of the book, and have already printed 10 prototypes that we are generally happy with. We are confident that with your support, we will be able to print the full 1000 copies, and deliver them to the children at the Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital in good time. We will ship your gifts immediately afterwards.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
