About

Synopsis

Calvin Jones is unlucky in life. Having dropped out of high school and been kicked out of home, for the past few years, Calvin has found himself lost in the world with no skills or experience to land him a job.

Surrounded by his equally unmotivated friends, Calvin drifts day to day, dreaming of a girl he can’t get and desperately waiting for his luck to change. Though once hoping to be something, to be successful, to be wanted, Calvin has resigned himself to a life of passing time.

One day Calvin and his mates take a gamble on buying a lottery ticket and when they win the jackpot all hell breaks loose, as each friend goes wild with their cut, spending on extravagences or trying to double their winnings. Motivated by that first scrap of success, Calvin attempts to turn his luck around, first getting a job dealing drugs for his cousin Hank, and then finally asking out his dream girl Avani.

All seems to be going well for Calvin – too well. Slowly his friend’s drama starts to creep it’s way into Calvin’s life, pulling him every which way, and now being wanted doesn’t seem so great. Calvin now has to decide whether he can lead a double life, helping his friends out of their troubles and continuing to lie to Avani about his involvement in drugs, or whether he needs to choose one over the other.

Drug dealers, crooked cops and mistaken identities and all prove major challenges, but to find his place in this messed up world he inhabits, the biggest obstacle Calvin must confront is his own weaknesses.

An original screenplay by director Alexander Lorian, Good For Nothing Blues explores a character on the wrong side of the tracks, who wants nothing more than to change his luck around but just can’t seem to catch a break. A funny Australian comedy about life in a changing age.

Why this project?

Director Alexander Lorian started writing this film in 2016, and it has been his biggest passion project yet. Inspired by films like the Big Lebowski, the Castle and Trainspotting, he set out to make a film that could be both wildly entertaining and funny as well as emotionally complex and engaging. We believe the script for this film has strong market potential to achieve a cult status in Australian cinema, with plenty of surprising twists and turns, characters who are funny but also have depth and realism, a blend of Australian and international influences that coalesces into a unique style, and addressing social issues of modern suburban life in a way that still maintains a constant humour about itself and multiple perspectives. What's more, we have a funny and talented cast and a skilled and dedicated crew who are more than capable of making a film that meets a standard far higher than it's budget would suggest.

 Budget

We’re asking for a small amount for a feature film but intend to use the money to cover general costs, like catering, cast and crew payment and to give art direction something to play with. If we don’t reach the funds required for this campaign, we won’t be going ahead with the film. Exceeding the required funds will allow us to bring the production value of the film even higher.

Non-Financial Ways to Contribute

We appreciate not everyone is able to provide financial contributions, however if you have a service/s instead of a cash contribution that you’d like to put forward, please email our producer at elle_cahill@hotmail.com. We have listed some suggestions below but are open to other suggestions as well.

Non-Financial Ways to Contribute It takes a community to make a film and we’d love for people to contribute in any way they can.

Elle is a Perth native who immediately after graduation from Curtin University with a double major in Film and Journalism, moved to the UK to gain some film experience. While over there, Elle worked at two London-based companies, building on her already existing producer skills. The first company specialized in video content and Elle was given the opportunity to produce digital content and TVC’s for Bentley, LinkedIn, Barbour International, Cirque du Soleil and Williams F1 to name a few. After finishing at RD Content, she moved to an animation and graphics company called Jump Design and produced the on-screen graphics for BBC’s Bake Off Creme de la Creme, Blackpool Pleasure Beach and The Last Leg opening titles. Elle returned to Perth in 2017 and now spends her time working on local projects as producer and 1st Assistant Director, as well as developing her own projects, two of which were shot this year and another two due to be shot early next year. Elle worked with Alexander on his short film Paranoia in May and is looking forward to working on Good For Nothing Blues with him again.

Main Cast

Cody Brown plays Calvin. 19, from Perth, he has been acting since he was in high school and his passion for the art has continued to grow. Cody has been a extra in various feature films and TV shows, and was the lead in the short film Life is Cruel.

Cody was drawn to the role of Calvin because he see’s Calvin as a very multi-layered character. The character of Calvin gives Cody the opportunity to explore his fears, his pain, his vulnerability, his strengths, weaknesses, relationships, his values and beliefs that collectively make up the choices he makes that get him through life. Cody has a very professional approach towards his craft and is always willing to learn and hone his skills. He has ambitions to challenge himself as an actor at the highest level. Through acting he wants to explore the parts of himself that allow his to grow and live his legacy on the world stage.

Bryce Myles plays Gary, Calvin's loudmouth best friend. Bryce trained extensively at The Actors Hub from 2016 - 2018 whilst simultaneously completing several Myles Pollard and NIDA short courses.

Bryce's filmography includes the lead male role in internationally acclaimed short, Love At First Sight. His most recent stage credits include Implied Consent and Charles in L’Appel Du Vide and A Mid Summer Night's Dream. Risks and challenges

Our biggest risk revolves around securing cast and crew availabilities. We have already developed the beginnings of a schedule so the cast and crew know immediately what dates they'll be required for. In addition, the kickstarter campaign will be used to give them a small upfront fee for their time so their is a financial incentive for them.

Once we reach our campaign amount rewards will be distributed in a timely manner and in accordance with their role in the film. For example, merchandise will be made and distributed immediately, access to the set will be arranged once the shooting schedule is finalised early next year (2019) and premiere tickets and Blu-Ray content will be made available once the film is ready to be screened publicly.

A project of this size always has difficulties that arise as the project unfolds, but producer Elle Cahill is experienced in running financed commercials shoots and will continue to keep backers on any developments that may affect as the film gets underway. Director Alexander Lorian has also self-produced many films so with their powers combined, are expecting Good For Nothing Blues to be a fun and challenging shoot for a witty and charismatically Australian film.
