MiPad Ultra Modern Doll’s House
The contemporary Doll’s House for adult collectors and children that you buy one floor at a time and stack in the order of your choice.
Please note - This is a relaunch with original video.
MiPad is a cool contemporary, fashionable doll's house with a modern difference. It celebrates today’s designs and designers but is also unique in itself.
My vision was to design a dolls house giving the owner more say in the layout and make it affordable for anyone to start their collection. Instead of buying the whole house, you buy it one floor (of your choice) at a time and build your house the way you want it. It has been designed to use a small amount of room in your home, very simple to assemble. MiPad will become a personalised work of art to show off to your friends. With the help of LED lighting it can even be a beautiful lighting feature in your own living room. MiPad's contemporary design is realistic enough for adult collectors yet simple and safe enough for children to play with. There are no very small parts.
A dolls house is not only a family heirloom and a time capsule, it can be an investment too. If they are well looked after they can hold or increase their value over time. Traditionally dolls house rooms are often tiny and cramped, yet the houses themselves take up a lot of room in your home. MiPad has an open plan layout, leaving you free to choose how the room will be used, it’s the exteriors of each floor that are different. You choose the floors you like, they’ll be 10 to choose from and stack them in any order you want.
Several years ago I designed a doll’s house called Clearview, it was a great success and it now a rare collectors item.
Clearview was launched in 2010. Immediately it attracted the media attention. Here are just a few of the original UK articles that were written, filmed, photographed, even recorded on radio! You’ll find many, many more on blogs from all over the world, just google ‘Elaine Shaw Clearview’ on images or regular google search.
• Sunday Telegraph Magazine
• Living Etc. (homestyle magazine)
• Metro Newspaper
• Daily Mail Newspaper
• Homes Channel (video advert)
* BBC Radio 4 Womans Hour Dec 15th 2010 (listen for 2nd article in program)
• Doll’s House Magazine
• Dolls House World Magazine
• Dolls House and Miniature World
Clearview was a learning curve for me to create a better design in many ways. There were many points I needed to address. So I came up with the concept of MiPad.
• Affordable entry to a very satisfying hobby.
• Versatile, the chance for owners to have a choice in design of the building itself.
• Stimulate the owner’s creative desires and ability.
• For children it encourages interest in design and architecture.
• MiPad is a blank canvas waiting for your stamp, make it your own.
• A form of tranquil escapism.
• As affordable or expensive as you want it to be.
• Space saving because it builds upwards.
• Completed design will include a door allowing you to build to the side if you want.
• Very simple to assemble and decorate.
• Can be built to collapse then reassembled for easy relocation.
• A clear view of the furniture inside without having to open it up.
• A beautiful and interesting lighting feature in your real living room with the help of LED lights that don’t heat up, last for ages and can even be run on batteries as well as electric. I’ll be designing these too in the future.
• Gorgeous contemporary design.
• Made from covered MDF and acrylic.
Other colours and finishes will soon be available. Prices will vary depending on design finish.
Each floor is: 23cm high, 51cm deep and 61cm wide. Or approx 9” high, 20” deep and 24” wide.
Doll’s houses are traditionally on a scale of 1:12, meaning every inch represents 1 foot in real life size. MiPad has kept to the original scale so that you can easily find other furniture to fit perfectly. MiPad is a little deeper than other dolls houses to facilitate a greater space to design for today’s living. Any floor can be used as any room, all it needs is your imagination.
Just For Fun!
Before I asked my nephew Rico to film a proper video I wanted to test the the video quality of my IPhone, so I asked my 6 year old (Ahyoka) to pretend she was presenting my dolls house. My intention was not to actually use it but I thought she done quite a good job so I included it anyway (below), but just for fun :)
MiPad comes decorated in white and flat packed. Assembly is very easy and you can choose to assemble permanently or for it to be taken down and reassembled for relocation. You can paint it yourself or decorate in your chosen style and get really creative, i.e. using wood veneer finish, it’s all up to you. All floors have easy access. Clear acrylic doors slide all the way out and others open up easily or can be removed. Everything is replaceable.
Opportunities for other Designers, Artists and Miniaturists
I intend to make MiPad a showcase for other designers, miniaturists and artists who make miniature or life size designs and art. MiPad can offer global exposure for their work. I would encourage them to take advantage of the media coverage my houses attract. Full size designs can be represented in miniatures and what’s great about that is that you can purchase the item for your real home too. For artists, their artwork would ideally be available in miniature and full size also. I invited Paris and Lisa Renfroe of prdminiatures.com to show their work in my first house. Although Paris is a celebrated and successful designer of full size and miniature work and his wife Lisa Renfroe is an excellent artist, it gave them extra exposure and bought them interested customers. It works!
My furniture is not yet available but if you email me at firstname.lastname@example.org and I'll send info on where you may find what you're looking for.
MiPad will be on the Miaim website which will be launched after the Kickstarter campaign assuming it is successful. If not, it will take a bit longer. Every one who pledges or enquires will be sent notification of when the website is live, details of which are coming soon.
Be the First!
If you become a backer of this project you'll be one of the first in the world to own MiPad, signed by it’s creator (me Elaine Shaw). As a backer you become our first customers of this product and embark on a new and fun hobby. You'll probably come back to us again and again to furnish your dream home. This makes it especially important that we make your experience a good one. We want to offer a quality product that will last for years to come. Hopefully it will be worth lots more money one day as a collectors item and family heirloom.
I have a great team behind me just waiting to get to work. I have very large professional company to cut the houses who are also commissioned to very major companies here in the UK and across the world for their high quality product design and manufacture. Alongside myself, Maria will be making top quality soft furnishings and Tony will personally decorate every house and assemble and finish furniture. Both Tony and Maria are also skilled in miniature work.
My nephew Rico McLeary-Campbell filmed the video for me and this project was launched on his 21st birthday! Well done Rico!
Eventually we will offer both regular lines of furniture accessories and lighting and bespoke work. For those customers that require something different, miniature versions of particular pieces, something they have designed themselves and/or exclusivity, we’ll try to accommodate everyone and every style. We prefer to undertake designs from 1900’s but not before. There is already a vast amount of quality miniatures available on the market that are catered by skilled crafts people for any styles before this time, we respect their space very highly. We have already designed a lighting range but it is not available yet because it too requires funding.
What Is The Money For?
Please Note: This goal amount for MiPad has been kept to a minimum and does NOT include the design or manufacture of any other house, furniture, accessories or lighting or any wages, although reaching over the goal amount will definitely help us realise this.
I’ve designed the basic system and had the prototype of 4 floors made but now I need to design another 6 floors making 10 floors to choose from in all.
The money will pay for:
1. My design of another 6 floors put onto the CAD program that operates CNC machines (cutting machines).
2. Manufacture of the first required run of houses.
3. Drawing of instructions.
4. Simple packaging.
5. Some shipping costs.
The Bigger Picture
My company is called MIAIM pronounced My Aim. I chose the name for three reasons. The first is that it encompasses everything I dream of which is mainly to make others dreams come true which is by no means just about dolls houses. I’d like to show people that you can turn a hobby into a business. I started from home for various reasons, one of which is that I am a single parent and I wanted to bring up my children myself. I have had my fair share of struggles but I’ve been persistent and consistent with my idea of supporting my family myself, working for myself and at the same time doing what I want to do. I happen to have a design degree but whilst it definitely helped, it was more to do with the ‘way’ further education makes you think than the subject matter itself. My aim is to inspire others to do what they want to do, become successful at it and earn good money from it however small they may at first think it is. Tenacity will pay off, it’s the nature of the thing. My houses are intentionally miniature but my business will be big. The second is that it’s an anagram of Miami, a place I love and I am inspired by the architecture. The third reason is as a logo it’s symmetrical and I like it.
If You Want It Please Help Us Spread The Word!
If you really like what we are doing and you really want one of these dream homes, please help us reach our goal by spreading the word. Even if they don't want a house they may like our idea and want to back us. Reaching our goal is the only way we can offer you this product right now so its very important we get there.
Please help us bring Doll’s houses back into fashion with style, we can’t do this without you. If it’s successful enough it will create already designated jobs for many people and great opportunities for other artists and designers.
Thank you for your time and interest.
Risks and challenges
In the video I say that we can have the product ready for the holiday season but this time as passed because this is a relaunch. Therefore estimated delivery dates will be between March and May 2014. Please accept my apologies for this but I'm sure the wait will be worth it.
As a backer you are very special to us and we want to make sure we send you a quality product. All floors will be hand finished and sent out on a first come first served basis. We will work especially hard to ensure your dolls house reaches you perfect and in a timely manner. Please be patient with us while we endeavor to make your dreams come true (well a small part of them anyway).Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
