The story of Right Shears

One never knows when inspiration will strike.  :)  My father-in-law and I were cutting metal mesh to cover a basement vent on his home to keep the critters out, common to homes here in California.  It was a two person job: he held the metal apart while I hacked at it with a regular pair of snips, and the metal mesh in return hacked away at our hands!  I had to get my hands out of the way of that metal mesh, and when the solution occurred to me, I knew it was something I had to build!  So I drew some sketches and cut out some cardboard and made the first (rough) prototype of what would become Right Shears.

Armed with the rough prototype shown above, I got a patent filed and worked with an excellent prototyping firm to create the rest of the prototypes shown above - created from cardboard, 3D prints, and eventually metal (with 3D printed handles)!  As a left handed person myself, I made sure that the handles are ambidextrous.

The result was a pair of scissors useful beyond my wildest dreams, with far superior ergonomics in my opinion, increased leverage, and cutting ability suited to a much wider variety of applications than existing conventional and angled scissors.

Furthermore, there is potential to help people with severe arthritis (see my friend on video below), and fibromyalgia as one person who suffers from it told me after she saw Right Shears in action.

I'm very thankful and blessed for the opportunity to work on Right Shears and hopefully, with your help, we will be able to bring them to the world!

Uses are limited only by our imaginations!  Some include paper and cardboard crafting:

Working with firm and sharp materials such as plastic:

Working in the kitchen (ergonomics really come into the picture here when working at a counter; try it yourself and see - try cutting a pizza or something flat on the counter with regular kitchen shears or scissors and observe what you do with your elbow and shoulder):

And, of course, working with the metal mesh that inspired Right Shears' creation in the first place (although, this is much better demonstrated in the video):

Working with thin sheet metal, aluminum and tin:

Even precision cutting:

Once you experience the superior ergonomics of Right Shears (demonstrated by the comparison below in which I try to hold the blades of a pair of regular scissors parallel to the Right Shears' blades - and have to lift my elbow and shoulder and put a bend in my wrist to do it), you will wonder how you ever made do with regular scissors!
